  1. There's also a Wachovia on Sawyer by the new Target. They are getting as bad as CVS.
  2. The Shepherd Street bridge over White Oak Bayou used to have a plaque calling it Erie Street Bridge. The plaque disappeared when they rebuilt the bridge. I have a small hope that someone takes those and puts them in a warehouse somewhere for posterity, rather than just junking them.
  3. Send a note to CVS Corporate offices nad tell them you will shop at Walgreens because there's no security at the Midtown CVS. That should get thier attention, especially if you tell them that your neighbors feel the same way. I'm in the Randalls regularly to pick up after school snacks for my son. It's way better since they have full time security. when it opened, you always got hit up for cash. Of course by the time it opened, we had lived in Midtown for a few years and I was pretty good at getting rid of panhandlers.
  4. I always forget about those block books being online, and the Sanborn maps are available with a library card. Thanks for looking htis up!
  5. OT question. Why is the street that runs off Bissonet towards Shadyside called W 11th Place?
  6. Male prostitution has been a problem in Midtown for years. We moved there in 1998, and were calling HPD almost daily in an effort to get something done. Occasionally there would be progress, but until someone starts taking pictures of the customers and sends notes to their home addresses, the business will carry on. Most of the customers are well to do black males "on the down low" - lots of expensve cars stop to pick up the prostitutes. Some of our former neighbors (we left Midtiwn after having a child and wanting a real yard) confronted the prostitutes and were threatened or told to mind their own business. Carol Alvorado always struck me as a waste of space. She promised a lot, but nothing ever happened. When we first moved to Midtown, the HPD Captain was Mark Aguirre, who got results, but was so disliked by the street officers that it was like pulling teeth. Attitudes were really bad. After Aguirre was run off, Dwayne Ready beacme Captain. He's a politician in uniform, very personalbe, but not really engaged with the community. I made the suggetion one time to have a patrol car just park near the prostitutes - if there' sno business, they will go away - but was told that it was impractical due to a lack of manpower.
  7. I see from the photo titles that the house has a "port cachere". I wouldn't normally flame someone for a spelling error (I miss a lot of keys, and have dyslexic fingers), but that one can't be accidental. Hard to believe prices are that high over there. I lived on Bening and Waycross years back, and never expected much out of that area.
  8. Witches hat house was in Midtown, where Club Houston is near theTexaco on Gray and San Jacinto (I think it was the SE corner of Webster and Fannin). The turret cap was stored at the architectural antiques place that used to be on Westheimer near the antique shops. I remember seeing it there in 1998 when we moved to Midtown.
  9. That was one big reason we sold our Midtown townhouse and moved to Timbergrove. I looked around at the townhouses and thought "this has the potential to be a mediocre place to live in 15 years". We loved the Midtown location, and in the early days there was a major pioneer spirit amongst the new residents. Once the resales started, it wasn't as good, and we decided to leave.
  10. 2200 Main is a strip center built in 1920 according to HCAD. There used to be a religious store named Mary Regina there, but it closed a few months ago. The building is faced in brick, and has four units facing Main, with their windows running slightly diagonal from the street. The two center units meet at a point. I go by there most days on the way to the museum district.
