  1. Your home is no more historic, and no more important, than my generic 1952 Timbergrove ranch. It's just older. Of course, for those stupid enough to support the concept of "historic" districts, karma will appear at the suitable moment. WalMart isn't receiving public assistance. in fact, the City is going to be able to make necessary infrastructure improvements ahead of schedule due to the generosity of the developer in funding those improvements. I really don't understand the hatred for WalMart. It's a business. Don't like them, don't shop there. Perhaps it's jealousy that someone else is more successful. in any case, WalMart has as much right to operate as anyone else. You aren't subsidizing WalMart. They are subsidizing you.
  2. Historic homes get a homestead exemption, WalMart doesn't. Your "historic" home therefore pays less proportionate tax than WalMart. None of the services you mention come from property taxes. Don't be disingenuous. The infrastructure improvements won't benefit only the developer. Anyone can drive on the improved streets. The 380 agreements don't cost the City any taxes they are currently collecting.
  3. Springwoods is run by the same people that run the former owner of the ExxonMobil property, according to the data I've seen by searching those entity names. So, as soon as the property was sold, Springwoods knew about it. No conspiracy, just some land owners looking for a way to make some money.
  4. Not really. The current site is in the floodplain which means total rebuild above base flood elevation, and there's no place to put the students while the current building is replaced.
  5. The new location will better serve the kids who go to the school, many of whom live nowhere near Scott St. There is a need for the school, it serves the brightest students in HISD, providing enhanced learning opportunities that are difficult to accomplish in a regular HS that might not have neough G/T students to fill a class.
  6. The residents of the 4th Ward were run off long before the decision to move CVS was made. Gregory-Lincoln, at the North end of that tract has been there for decades.
  7. It won't be as nice as the Menninger campus in Topeka. That was a beautiful place, with hills, trees, etc. Just in the wrong location to keep up with changes in medical economics.
  8. That's as stupid as me asking you to prove you stopped beating your spouse, or to prove it wasn't you that stole the gnome out of my neighbor's yard.
  9. What part of "WalMart drivers follow their route or get fired" do you not understand? You probably don't know any truck drivers - they would be beneath you in status, and not worthy of your attention, but they like keeping their jobs. Do you follow the rules of your employer (assuming you even have a productive job)? If so, why would you assume that WalMart drivers wouldn't? And, of course, there's that GPS thingy that tells WalMart exactly where the truck went, and presumably sets off an alarm if the truck departs from the preplanned route.
  10. Provide the ordinance that mandates the use of the design manual.
  11. WalMart can have a good defense if they demonstrate that drivers are subject to a training program, and that there are policies in place that require the drivers to follow specific routes when delivering goods to stores. This is common practice with larger companies - every turn, every street, is mapped out for drivers, and the GPS in the truck that transmits the route taken back to HQ keeps them honest. If WalMart tells drivers to keep the trucks off the Yale Street bridge, you can be fairly sure that the drivers will obey.
  12. HISD is huge. The current location of Carnegie is bad for anyone who lives North of I-10 or West of the Loop. The developers sole purpose in the 4th Ward was to make money. The old shotgun houses were often owned by people who didn't live in the neighborhood, and had no interest in anything other than making money off their property. Anyone who thought the old ways would continue were naive.
  13. The current campus is on the South side of town, and difficult to get to for the students coming from the far reaches of the disttrict. The new campus is centrally located, and reduces overall travel times. The 4th Ward is gone. There's very little left. The people left in droves 10 years ago or more. Housing density there is far less than what it used to be.
  14. It was on the smaller bridge that goes over the bayou. They redid the concrete railings and the plaque disappeared. I'll have to play with Google Earth to refresh my memory.
  15. Fortune ranks companies on revenues, not profits. WalMart was almost $5 billion behind ExxonMobil in profits for 2010, even though WalMart's revenues were $120 billion higher.
  16. It's nice that they are building, but there's no way it will be as nice as the old campus in Topeka, KS. That was a beautiful setting.
  17. That house in Tomball is exactly like the pictures of houses my Mom lived in while she was growing up, mostly the Heyser camp South of Bloomington, and the Government Wells camp North of Freer.
  18. Having the top managers of the company too close to the operational HQ makes everyone nervous. Dallas is close enough for the execs to be involved, but not so close as to make them a distraction.
  19. If WalMart is anyhting like other large companies I've dealt with, the trucks have set routes, and drivers must have permission to deviate. Most of those trucks are equipped with GPS that transmits the location and route of the vehicle back to a monitoring site, just to make sure everything goes according to plan. You really think WalMart lets their drivers go wherever they please?
  20. Here's a house with an original balcony. Looks almost exactly like it does in the picture of my Grandfather standing in front of it in 1915 or so, when he lived there. 231 W 17th
  21. That tract isn't in the City, so permits wouldn't be filed there. Does Harris County require permits? Requests for bids will probably go to the short list XOM has already identified.
  22. I am really glad I wasn't drinking any liquid when I read that. That's one of the funniest things I've seen this week.
  23. Where do you get off thinking you have any right to tell your neighbors what to do with their property? Why shouldn't your neighbor be able to build a "McVic"? If you want protection, convince your neighbors to agree to deed restrictions. Quit using the City to enforce your beliefs on others.
  24. I was wondering what happened there. Don't know why i didn't think of Esperanza. Makes the drive to Harvard to drop off my son a little easier (I go down Heights to 7th to avoid the minor backup of turning left onto Harvard at 8th).
  25. The veterans cemetery on Stuebenr Airline has been there since 1965. I had a cousin who was buried there in 1966.
