    ayn rand

finally finished reading the fountainhead. (i know, it took months...always in the middle of ten different books.) i agree with niche. roark's character, the ideal for rand, is neither greedy nor prideful. roark simply knows who he is. he doesn't take from anyone. simply, he is his own man. he requires no adulation nor does he bend to criticism. he operates without pretense. (confident people tend to frustrate or frighten those who are merely pretentious.) rand sees a collective society as one which will kill that which is independent or uniquely individual. the characters with a collective bent use the word "egotist" when describing roark. rand's roark, as her ideal man, is not endorsing egotism. the inverse is true. toohey, keating, even wynand, were in fact the egotists. while reading the book, i was frequently reminded of the period in which she wrote and her background; facts which enhanced my experience. i would suggest reading about rand before reading her books. it helps to see where there might be undue prejudice. would toohey be considered a "straw man" or even wynand?
  3. ........darn, so i guess we won't be going to mai's after the 80's party in two weeks. any 24 hour vietnamese alternatives in midtown?
  4. agreed, no need to beat a dead issue. (have feeling niche doesn't require much sleep)
  5. well, except for the big balls. ;)

  6. your spaghetti monster reminds me of elsworth toohey's "headless monster - prestige". toohey is lecturing keating about the collectivist world to come..."A world in which man will not work for innocent an incentive as money.....The approval of his fellows-their good opinion-the opinion of men who'll be allowed no opinion. An octopus, all tentacles and no brain." well, ...

  7. i've always admired this building but never been inside. can anyone just "pop in", or do you have to attend a service, i wonder?
  8. anyone going to be at Rich's June 18th for 80's fiX? http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=113402715337863 ........pasted from the invite........... Morton, Snow, DeGrace…we’re baaaack!…same line-up as October 2009’s 80’s Reunion: Part 2 party… this time hosted by Houston’s landmark nightclub RICH’s! In the 80’s we DJ’d just about everywhere worth a damn- including NRG (brainchild of John “the Godfather” Hanley…anyone remember closing NRG at 9AM followed by a pilgrimage to RICH’s for dancing ‘til noon?), 6400 (Mike Snow LIVE on the radio!), XCESS (loud, dark, and industrial), NUMBERS (eternal), MECCA (Wednesdays were scandalous), POWERTOOLS/ PTL CLUB (aka PowerToolsLive-hosted by John “No Ma'am” Beeman), OCEAN CLUB, LIZARD LOUNGE (much respect to creator Don Nedler and Edwin “HOUSTON SCENE” Dean host of “Black Thursdays”), HOMAGE, THERAPY (if you can remember Therapy, you weren’t there…) RICH’s opened its doors back in 1983, is still going strong, and has continually evolved with upgrades to their space, sound, and lighting, making it one of the most technologically advanced mega clubs in the nation. We’ll be spinning a mix of 80’s underground club faves on the main floor and ALL INDUSTRIAL tracks upstairs on the “Red Room’s” banging sound system (Skinny Puppy, Revolting Cocks, Ministry…bring your night-vision glasses for this room…it will be DARK). RICH’s features a full service bar on the patio and plenty of A/C inside. Let’s make some new memories in place of those brain cells we killed back in the day…SEE YOU THERE! ................

  20. you cannot create laws that will prevent people from being greedy any more than you can stop drinking and driving with higher penalties. banks can charge what they want, i don't have to use their credit. in addition, if anyone took the time to read the small print, we give them permission to change rates based on whatever criteria they, the bank, chooses. you sign for the card, you pay what they want. and, if you steal my weedeater, whether or not legislation has been passed to allow it, i can kick your ass or turn the other cheek. people choose to take it up the arse or they don't.
  21. lol. i just had a flash of myself with long golden locks and a shiny blue dress. not pretty. yes, there are greedy people. you can't legislate morality. if a person abuses their position, they are punished. simply because greed exists is no reason to regulate profits or how they are spent. i believe that because the corporation pursues profit, i benefit. as long as wal mart exists and does what it does, i get to buy things at a cheaper cost to me. if wal mart doesn't treat it's employees well, the employees should leave. if service in wal mart becomes too poor, i might be willing to pay more for better service elsewhere. personal choices on a large scale, for the most part, create the corporations vying for political clout. i "am" wal mart. for that matter, i "am" blue cross blue shield. i am gmac. i am gmc. i am gateway computers. i am eddie bauer. i am nabisco. (i'm now standing in wal mart, with XXXL shiny blue dress, black pumps, four day shadow and long golden locks with a sign that says "I AM NABISCO".) it's difficult to see big industry or corporations as evil entities when they are comprised of so many different elements. if the mean old health insurance industry wants to kill healthcare legislation by lobbying key congressional figures, hallelujah. i like my health care plan and don't want it to change. i certainly do not think a corporation thinks of me at all, that would be preposterous. i act in my own self interest and i choose to utilize the products of corporations whose primary goal is profit; they wouldn't exist otherwise and i would not have the option of their benefit(s).
  22. fox news was created because there was a market for it. plain and simple. to say that it was created to sway public opinion or as a propaganda machine sounds like "vast right wing conspiracy". people who tuned out CNN, NBC ABC, CBS tuned in to FOX. i'm not sure why there is a disconnect between the big bad corporations and the common folk. corporations are made up of employees and investors. what benefits a particular corporation might benefit me, my neighbors, my community, and so on. (yes, there are excesses. I understand that.) if a government regulation stifles my industry, my corporation, family, neighbors and community suffer. if corporate donations give my industry, corporation, family, neighborhoods and community a voice when it comes time to write legislation, then so be it.
  23. loggia turns out the "gym" i heard about is a sports bar, loggia. guess sugarland has one already. a restaurant called "pure" is opening soon at technology forest & research. all natural ingredients. sounds good.
  24. sorry guys, i mucked up the posts in the move to the new thread. if you know who posted what, i can add your/their name(s). certain dems and republicans have railed against this kind of thing for years. where's the uproar? i'm interested to see if any talking heads make issue of it in the coming week.
