  1. there will always be homeless people. there will always be poor people. there will always be alcoholics and the mentally impaired. that being said, who are you (am i) when someone in need approaches you. it is not my moral issue what one does with their money. you do what you feel morally inclined to do when the opportunity arises. if i feel the need to give a hand out, it is because i want to do good. if the person recieving the hand out buys a rock with it that would be their moral choice. not that i would give someone money specifically for a rock of crack, but each time i do hand someone my change or a fiver, it gives that person an "opportunity" to do a better thing. what they do with it is their issue. that being said, i don't want to be harassed (as i have been) coming out of jones hall with a date and then being insulted because i didn't hand out some dough. whether it's a person living under a nearby bridge or a girl scout, stay out of my personal space.
  2. this statement is incomplete. there are many homeless who are mentally impaired, some from extreme abuse. being homeless does not equal alcoholic.
  3. anyone remember a mayor named "lee p. brown"? anyone know any african-american, hispanic, asian owned businesses benefitting from these improvements? anyone know any african-american, hispanic, asian, etc. city council members? come on, redscare. "white people"?
  4. ninfa's original location most likely influences the thought that the best mexican food is on the east side. i've heard of a taco stand off of navigation that is good, but i can't vouch for that. try a few taquerias. it's an adventure, and there is usually something good on the menu. i usually ask the wait staff if they have a specialty. most of the time ( and this works in most ethnic restaurants i'm not familiar with the menu) i am pleasantly surprised.
  5. that wulfe & co. what will they come up with next? i love those guys!! (darn, i can't get this brown stuff off my nose)
  6. i had two uncles who worked for budweiser/busch through retirement. busch gardens also had exotic bird shows. it was a small facility within the busch complex at i-10 and the east loop. i believe busch still had sea-arama marine world in galveston at the time.
  7. lmao at the direction of this thread. i read that za za was pronounced "tza tza", a hard z. sort of like pizza (peetza). come to think of it, that is even more foo foo if it's true.
  8. midtown coog's suggestion for initial greenspace would be cost conscious and smart. phase one: establish a lawn and perimeter elements (preserving existing vegetation and elements). see how people use it, what paths (if any) do they take, etc? do events come up in which organizations or festivals desire to use the space? phase two: use information from usage patterns to build a better park/public space.
  9. a constant on foot (or bicycle) police presence would be nice. ditto dj v lawrence's last post. guests at the hilton americas and people visiting the grb should be drawn to and feel safe in this space, even after 10PM.
  10. the entire park should have a misting system with nozzles built into any and every lamp post, fence post, or architectural feature. HELLO august!
  11. although the significance of this building may be lacking, it's renovation will provide added interest to the main street "streetscape", as well as increased activity in the area. i'm happy about it.
  12. i've been wishing for an architecture critic at the chronicle for some time now. it would create necessary public discussions on our built environment (discussions which i do miss here at haif) .
  13. has anyone noticed how the chronicle is showing an increased interest in stories on architecture? the article on picking an architect for the MFA expansion and today's article "building a better world through architecture" are recent evidence of this trend. do you think it is a direct result of this website? haif is getting more mainstream advertisers and the chronicle is paying attention to what we post. it would be interesting (mr editor) to know how well the site is doing and how many people are spending time here.
  14. i remember being one of the last people dancing on the dance floor at some one hot steamy night in the late nineties. for some unknown reason i took off my ($300) watch and dropped it someone's plastic water cup. i went to some the following week and the bartender (uhhhh scott, i think) returned my watch to me with the story of how he obtained it. i was never quite sure of what i was thinking.
  15. i went by the menil and rothko chapel yesterday and the broken obelisk in the reflecting pool in front of rothko is gone. anybody know what's up?
  16. i don't know where that stuff comes from. it's always after my fourth glass of 2002 rosemount shiraz. thanks for the compliment.
  17. oh the montrose! frolic and fun wasted til sun moral depravity drug induced cavity creative flare menacing stare soft hearted stone monotone tome what freakish ingenuity wakes the gods of loneliness?..... the montrose i once knew
  18. how refreshing to see you 'round, dbigtex. houston is poised for a "look-see" structure. my best hopes are for the asia society's new museum. perhaps, taniguchi (sp?) will make a splash.
  19. http://www.garden-gifts.com/decor.htm try a google search for japanese home furnishings or furniture. you may find japanese influenced furnishings at area stores like IKEA, storehouse, z gallery, etc. asking at area japanese restaurants is a good idea too. welcome to the forum.
  20. or even the less expensive designated crosswalk with red lights/sensors in highly populated zones. centers that have a large amount of people (post oak central, for instance) contain pedestrians (or potential pedestrians) who do not want to walk to the nearest intersection (which could be quite a distance) to get across the street. in order to create a more concentrated, people friendly area cars will have to "take a back seat". pardon the pun.
