  1. True Anomaly is great! The name initially intrigued me because it is space themed (the last of the 6 Keplerian orbital elements). They have a lot of Belgian style beers if I remember correctly, so they add some diversity to the Houston craft beer scene.
  2. I'm so sorry for seemingly spamming this thread but this is my industry area (which I'm obsessively passionate about) and I think I'm bringing new information in each time. Let me know if I should post less! From the Community Impact, a map of the new developments at the Houston Spaceport. That third anchor tenant could be announced next month! In January, Intuitive Machines, a smaller company already at the spaceport will send it's NOVA-C lander to the surface of the moon. https://communityimpact.com/houston/bay-area/development/2021/05/22/the-future-of-space-city-houston-spaceport-growing-as-officials-draw-attention-to-industry/ Additionally, a space-focused economic development organization, TexSpace, has been founded to help bring more space companies to the Galveston Bay Area. Hopefully they are successful and lead to a lot of redevelopment in the Clear Lake area (maybe even some urbanization???). https://www.texspace.org A small company called Venus Aerospace is relocating to the spaceport from California. Their goal is to design and build a hypersonic aircraft traveling at Mach 12. https://communityimpact.com/houston/bay-area/impacts/2021/05/07/impacts-roundup-spaceplane-developer-coming-to-clear-lake-and-more-aerospace-news/ Lastly, the new NASA administrator, former Senator Bill Nelson, this week began lobbying Congress for $11 billion out of the infrastructure bill. Of this, $5.4 billion would go to construction and renovation projects at NASA field centers. I expect Johnson Space Center to be a big winner as it is one of the largest and most important NASA field centers and has quite a few asbestos-filled, aging buildings. So stay tuned on that, if the bill passes, hopefully we see quite a bit of construction and renovation at JSC in the next few years. https://spacenews.com/nelson-uses-chinese-mars-landing-as-a-warning-to-congress/
  3. Adding a streetcar and using the outside lanes to widen sidewalks is my dream.
  4. Phase 1 (preliminary design) Design was approved at the city council meeting this week. This should finish in 10 months. With Phase 2 (final design and real estate acquisition) Design finishing in 2 years. https://houston.novusagenda.com/agendapublic/CoverSheet.aspx?ItemID=22421&MeetingID=484 https://communityimpact.com/houston/heights-river-oaks-montrose/environment/2021/05/20/houston-oks-11-million-contract-for-north-canal-project-design/
  5. More details (compilation of Houston Chronicle and Houston Business Journal articles): Collins Aerospace: Collins (through their Hamilton Sundstrand subsidiary) will be building a $25.6 million 120,000 sf manufacturing and office building to be complete by the end of 2022 on 8.4 acres with a 10,000 sf spaceflight startup incubator. This will have capacity for 250 employees and will be used for manufacturing life support systems for civil spaceflight (I'm speculating that they have an agreement to provide ECLSS for Axiom's space station). The city will own this facility. Collins has a right of first refusal option to purchase an additional 8 acres within 3 years. Axiom Space: Axiom will be using $4 million of airport system money and a memorandum of agreement to begin design of their complex. This will be a $120 million, 430,000 sf facility that will include high bay, hangar, flight development and testing, office, and astronaut facility space on 22.5 acres with a right of first refusal on another 9.8 acres. The airport system/city are expected to provide financing later this year for the rest of Axiom's facilities which will begin construction in late 2021 or early 2022. The city will own this facility. Below are progress pictures of their space station. And their assembly plan: Next anchor tenant: A third major anchor tenant is expected to be announced soon. Great quote here from City Council Member Abbie Kamin: “The fact that we are revitalizing the space industry here in Houston is remarkable, that we’re bringing business, we’re bringing jobs and space exploration back to Space City.”
  6. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/space/article/Houston-Spaceport-announces-Collins-Aerospace-as-16188126.php This is huge! Collins Aerospace will be building a manufacturing and startup incubator facility at the Houston Spaceport. It looks like the city will be lending $25.6 million to build a 120,000 sf building on an 8 acre site? Construction starts in June. Collins does lots of life support equipment work, especially with space suits. They’ll be expanding their presence in Clear Lake as they have a campus at Saturn Lane and NASA Parkway currently. This is especially awesome as Collins is a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies (created from the merger of Rockwell-Collins, Raytheon, and United Technologies Corporation), a Fortune 100 company (I believe).
  7. It seems like a lot of people on here are obsessed with cranes so here’s an interesting one for y’all. I assume this will be used to build the 500 foot launch integration tower. I think it has been nicknamed “Frankencrane” by some reporters.
  8. Are we Space City or not? Time for us to totally commit to being a city in the space age!
  9. A couple more developments have happened in the area since the Rise and a couple more are in progress now. Aspire: The Standard: Sterling Northgate: on Wellborn but still adds to the whole neighborhood Z Bar & Bistro: former Loupot's The Hudson: St. Mary's Catholic Center JPII Center: Filled out the main block that had a small parking lot on it. St Mary's New Church and master plan: this is the most exciting one in my opinion New 19 floor high-rise student housing on site of former Lutheran Student Center Chapel: The Lutherans will have space in the first floor for their new chapel. If news reports are correct, this will be the tallest building in the area.
  10. This project has finally converged on a final design and is officially in progress. Selective demolition started a year ago and construction activity should pick back up this summer. This park will turn Kyle Field into waterfront property, create a grand new vista with a dramatic lawn for the east side of the stadium, and provide a new events center designed specifically for Ring Day among other events. https://aggiepark.tamu.edu
  11. I figured the Aggies on here may be interested in hearing about what's going on at the RELLIS campus, one of the Texas A&M University System's most exciting current projects. The RELLIS Campus is the redeveloped Riverside Campus (before that it was the Research Annex and before that it was the Bryan Army Airfield). Today, it is home to a growing number of state research, training, and response agencies, research centers, and educational buildings. The innovative aspect of the education portion of it is that it is essentially a multi-institutional university. The first two years of classes are taken at Blinn with the degree-specific classes being taken at a university with a presence on the campus. Currently, every university in the A&M System except for A&M-College Station offers degrees at the RELLIS Campus. SFA also offers degrees there. Master Plan: https://rellis.tamus.edu/pdf/RELLIS-CampusMasterPlan_FINAL-Compressed.pdf Entry Plaza: Joint Library Facility: High Density Library Storage Facility, joint project between the TAMU and UT systems. Center for Infrastructure Renewal: Texas A&M Transportation Institute Headquarters RELLIS Academic Alliance Building One: RELLIS Academic Alliance Building Two: Blinn at RELLIS Building One: Blinn at RELLIS Building Two: Blinn at RELLIS Master Plan: Agricultural & Workforce Education Complex: Data and Research Center: Bush Combat Development Complex: Research and Testing Center for the Army Futures Command Research Integration Center: Ballistic, Aero-optics, and Materials Facility: kilometer long, two meter wide hypersonic wind tunnel; the world's largest Innovation Proving Grounds & other future projects: Administration Building: Plant:
  12. I think it's something done to validate designs onsite. Essentially to make sure the designs work if there's any strange lighting or odd conditions at the site that weren't accounted for in the design process and could affect how the building looks.
  13. The worst part for me is the trail access this will have (albeit to a still unrepaired bridge). The Home Depot lot would've been perfect for restaurants, bars, and small retail with a nice gateway from the trail. It could've been another cluster on that rail-trail that would've linked up with MKT, Heights Mercantile, and White Oak Blvd.
  14. As someone in the stated age group, that isn't the perception anymore. A year ago it was but now it's seen as pretty crime ridden. A friend that lives there won't even walk at night anywhere due to safety which neutralizes the walkability aspect of it. The Heights, Montrose, and Washington Ave area are seen as more desirable now. I'm really hoping the Ion and ancillary developments change that though.
  15. The logical intersection it would be referring to would be San Jacinto and Wheeler, I guess I'll forgive a Florida company for that mistake. If my thinking is correct it could fit in front of Greentown Labs and between the Ion and Greentown Labs. If this is actually what is happening it appears Rice wants to get in on the long term ground lease golden goose. The Texas A&M System makes tens of millions every year off of similar arrangements in College Station. I can only imagine what Rice would make off of these blocks.
  16. I went to Texas Live! in Arlington this weekend while visiting a friend and I really hope something similar but Houston, Astros, and space themed ends up on this site. It's a really cool and surprisingly unique experience for it being in the metroplex. Normally I would be against Houston doing a carbon copy of something in Dallas but this is the exception.
  17. I walk through this on my walk almost every day, so here's a quick progress update: Homestead: Buildout essentially done, they have a hiring sign out front. RayBan: Appeared on the signs within the past few weeks, they'll occupy the space across from Homestead. They have permit papers on the doors. La La Land Kind Cafe: Structural buildout looks to be almost done. Sheetrock is going up. Sweetgreen: Uhaul truck was outside with people moving things in. Highline Park: Structural buildout going on. Rakkan Ramen: Essentially done, should open soon, menu was outside today but I didn't think to get a picture. Da Gama: Looks to be close to opening, already has ration furniture. I also found the attached file on the leasing company's website that appears to show there are quite a few more retailers lined up: Urban Outfitters, Madewell, Fabletics, Free People, and Sephora are some of the bigger names. Also quite a few fitness studios. 2078315945_BrandBook-MKT03.2021_COMPRESSED-compressed.pdf
  18. With NASA recently selecting SpaceX's Starship as its lunar lander for the Artemis program, I figured some people may be interested in seeing the development of the Starship launch site since Starship will be part of the Artemis program lead out of the Johnson Space Center in Houston. None of the images were taken by me. Overview Current view of the launch site with Serial Number 15 (SN15) ready for testing. Orbital launch platform and integration tower. The truss structure on the left will stack the rocket stages and will be 469 ft tall. The slanted columns in the shape of a hexagon will become the orbital launchpad where Starship will launch from. Build site where construction of the rockets take place.
  19. The last one is the Highway 36A proposal. The goal is to reroute truck traffic coming in from Port of Freeport out of Houston and through Bryan-College Station to Fort Worth. https://36acoalition.org
  20. The Fry's (a Kroger brand in Arizona) in downtown Phoenix is a pretty good example of this. Keep in mind it's not very tall though because this is Arizona, the state's tallest building is 35 floors.
  21. I believe it's near the Grayson at Baybrook and Lifetime Fitness near the mall. It has a Glenwest Drive address.
  22. Didn't mean to shoot you down! Was just sharing the info I had. While East River would definitely make for a great office environment for them, I'd love to see them grow in Clear Lake. I think it would be really awesome to have a major cluster of spaceflight companies down there and see how that area grows over the next 10-20 years. Any SpaceX presence is welcome anywhere in the city by me though, especially in a development as exciting as East River!
