  1. In societies where religion and government are intertwined, is it even legal to pass out flyers or knock on doors to talk to people about faith or lack of faith? That's a world I don't want to live in.
  2. Whether or not you believe is another issue. The issue is freedom of religion, and freedom from religion. It shouldn't matter to you what I believe, and I shouldn't care what you believe. When religion forces itself into the government, and how we live our day-to-day lives, that's when we need to care.
  3. She should have the right to pass out flyers, but you should have the right to say "No, thank you" and go about your own personal business.
  4. Wouldn't the world be a much saner place if everyone could do this? Religious fundamentalism of all faiths is what scares me the most.
  5. That was really hysterical. Thanks for letting us know about it.
  6. You could be right, it could be a slow fade. But at least at the Palace Lanes, I know there are lots of teams that play regularly. I'm confident that other bowling alleys are equally busy. And the kids still love it. Go to a bowling alley on a Saturday morning and you'll probably see a few kids' birthday parties going on.
  7. Don't rub it in!! It is a really beautiful day here in Houston today, but it's 92 right now, according to the chron. It'll only get worse for us, but for you it'll stay about the same all summer, right? Congratulations on the move and good luck with your new home!
  8. Yes, there are still lots of them around. My kid and his friends ride their bikes to the Palace Lanes on Bellaire fairly often. And it's always crowded. So rest assured, northbeaumont, that bowling is alive and kicking.
  9. If your budget is that much, would you consider a single-family house instead of a townhouse or condo? With the proliferation of townhouses, I'm afraid the resale value won't be as good. There are many nice, renovated homes in the Montrose area for that kind of budget.
  10. They're on Austin near Wheeler. I just found them by searching for "Tuscan One" in the subdivision category at har.com. They nice looking, but nothing too spectacular, IMO. Here's a link to one of them at har.com: http://www.har.com/8025103
  11. Here's the link to the article in yesterday's Chronicle about them: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...es/4874774.html
  12. If you don't get an offer, consider donating it to the Historic Houston Salvage Warehouse. www.historichouston.org
  13. Sorry, I've been on vacation! I grew up in Park Place and went to the Catholic grade school across the freeway. It was a great working-class neighborhood -- we considered Glenbrook Valley to have the "rich" folks. Most people in Park Place had large yards, and Reveille Park was a nice green space. One of my favorite memories of the 'hood was Park Place Pharmacy -- we'd stop by after school and get a soda or ice cream at the fountain. Even then -- in the 70s -- it was a throwback to an earlier time. My folks don't live there anymore, so I don't go by very often. I hope it makes a comeback.
  14. We loved the Judy's at my high school in the early 80s. Awesome music for dancing. I did read in the Chronicle several years ago that David Bean was working at the Houstonian as an aqua therapist.
  15. I hope he sees the light before he spends all that money and decides to spend it on something worthwhile. Take a cue from the Gates Foundation.
  16. No reason to be embarassed. It's tough to move to a new town, and you chose a great area to get started in. Good luck, and keep us informed. Post pics if you can.
  17. Is it blocking parking or causing any other physical interference?
  18. Wow. We can always have dreams. Thanks for sharing.
  19. I think Big Frank's had a sign outside that said "100% Sausage." That always cracked me up.
  20. The area you are looking at is great, you're right. I had never heard the term Doville. A quick google search turned up this: Montrose is home to Doville and therefore many artists and lovers of the arts as well as many students at Rice University and the University of Houston. The name "Doville" is a triple pun-"Do" as in "Dominique de Menil"; "Do" as in "Deauville," the resort town in Normandy; and "Do" as in "dough," moolah. Almost everything in Doville that might seem to have one explanation usually has at least three. Those who concern themselves with such details are interested in "Menilia." ...from this website. But don't limit yourself to that small area. There are other really nice parts of Montrose. Go to www.har.com and do a search for residential leases in 77006 an 77098 zips.
  21. When I lived in Garden Oaks (just north of the Heights) in the 90s there was an ice cream shop on 11th near Heights (I think). It was in an old -- really old -- filling station and was called the Carriage Creamery. They had unique flavors and we liked going there, but it only lasted a year or two. I bet it would work better now -- there are many more families in the Heights than 10 years ago.
  22. No, I just had some connections to folks in the Gulf/Chase building.
  23. James Turrell is the same artist who did the neon tunnel between the two MFAH buildings. I havent been to the Quaker meeting house but have seen many beautiful photos of it. http://www.friendshouston.org/
  24. I would certainly like to find out! If I have the chance to go up, I'll report back.
