  1. My mom was an Arthur Murray dancer in the mid 50s, probably at the one on Westheimer since she lived in that area. Another of the dancers introduced my mom to his brother, and nearly 50 years later they're still together! She's got some cool photos of the studio and the shows they put on. If I can get her to scan some, I'll post.
  2. Over what time frame do they promise to get this done, I wonder?
  3. This article I found doesn't say anything about it being an environmentally friendly bank. This day and age, to label yourself "green" and not be environmentally friendly is misleading. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories.../27/story1.html
  4. Well, I have indeed listened to both the Limbaugh and Savage shows, mostly Limbaugh (if I'm in the car at lunch) but Savage a few times. I do not agree with them typically, but I force myself to listen to them sometimes so I can have some form of first-hand opinion. My comments -- with no intent to launch into an in-depth comparison of talk show hosts -- were only intended to give some current frame of reference. Limbaugh might not typically scream at his callers, because most (not all) of his callers agree with him, but he does really let it out sometimes when he's just talking to the listeners. Like the other day I heard him scream in a frighteningly fascist tone "America IS the SOLUTION." And Savage just goes off without warning with his, as you say, "hateful rants." I've grown to really hate all the screaming on talk shows -- and it's so common these days even on "respected" news programs. If you're screaming at me it means you're out of control and not worth my time to listen to you.
  5. He died in 2001 at the age of 61. http://www.stp.uh.edu/vol66/143/news/news3.html Also (with a photo)... http://www.texasradiohalloffame.com/alvinvanblack.html
  6. I'm a few years younger than you, but I remember listening to Alvin in the 70s and I can also remember the sound of his voice to this day. His ranting made such an impression on me. It was akin to Rush Limbaugh or Michael Savage rantings today. I felt so sorry for the poor callers. And then when he was on Ch. 13, he was a cupcake.
  7. I saw a photo the other day -- it's in the Tyvek stage. It doesn't look modern at all. I'll see if I can find out a bit more about it.
  8. A friend of a friend is currently building a house in West U that was designed by Bolton. He's in his 90s and still working!
  9. I've used it maybe three or four times over the last year and have had wonderful success. When I joined, it was free -- I don't know why, I guess they were having a special promotion to get people in. I just redid my kitchen using someone I found there, too.
  10. I just used someone I found on Angie's list. "Tree Dr." Roy Rivers. My maple tree in the front yard wasn't doing well, and my yard guy just wanted to cut it down. But Roy came out and said it was full of bores and needed to be treated, fed and trimmed. He's apparently been around a while. I never met him, he just came out to the house while I was at work, gave me an estimate and did the work the next day. 713-529-3403
  11. My husband grew up there, and he doesn't remember an Archer's sporting goods (or any sporting goods store) in Remond Terrace or Culpepper Plaza. He does remember a Wyatt's sporting goods somewhere near the campus. But he readily admits he might not remember correctly
  12. A month or two ago this happened to me at home in Meyerland. It was around 6:30 in the morning and the helicopter stayed over my house for abut 10 minutes. I was scared to even go outside, thinking there was some convict on the loose. Tried to find out about it, but to no avail.
  13. This is great for BCS. A realtor I know in the area says residents should expect dozens more restaurants in the area in the next few years, too. If they could only finish Texas Avenue soon!
  14. Yeah, I saw in the Chron recently that Beaver's is supposed to open this summer. They describe it as "a modern-day icehouse with the best damn BBQ in Houston.'' That should be fun. Those of you who live in the Heights should keep us posted on the grand opening.
  15. Edit: Oops, this was for the neighborhood association only! It appeared to be open to everyone...
  16. I guess not inviting him to family get-togethers isn't enough? You're right, as a Westerner, this mentality is incomprehensible to me.
  17. I've been there, too -- this past spring break. There's a few fun things to do in the area, and in Amarillo, which is just 20 miles north. Hiking the Palo Duro canyon was breathtaking -- can't believe I had never been there before.
  18. We pay a little more than this, plus the occasional repair cost. When you buy your house, make sure the sellers buy you a home warranty, and make sure it covers the pool equipment. We sure used it!
  19. That's awesome. I applaud the owners (and the architect) for their creativity. Have you written to the owners yet to see if they'll host a HIAF party?
  20. Well, thankfully my husband makes enough for us to afford it. Many aren't as fortunate, even though their priorities are in the right place, too.
  21. I work part time -- 30 hrs a week. I love it, and I hope I can keep doing it until my kid finishes high school. In middle school and high school -- when there's no longer any regular after-school programs like in elementary -- I like knowing that I can be there when the bell rings. My workplace, thankfully, is supportive. If I were still in a corporate environment, I might not be so lucky. When I was in the corporate world, I got to work early and left early to pick up my child from day care/school, and I was labeled a "clock watcher" for leaving every day at 4:30. It sucked.
  22. What about a vote for "Best News Reporting"?
  23. My father remembers this bar being advertised in the 40s in the (original) Houston Press. He's checking with others to see what they remember.
  24. St. Stephen's has bought up so much of that property, and they usually keep the old homes and renovate them into classrooms, which was great. They did tear down one for a parking lot several years ago, though. I used to have connections there, but not any more.
