  1. And putting in wider pedestrian-friendly sidewalks reduces the number of parking spaces available. On most Houston sidewalks you can hardly walk next to someone without it being uncomfortably close.
  2. I doubt there are many "ladies who lunch" on this forum, but you never know!
  3. You're right, Ben. All appear to be in great shape. Amazing. Did he design anything in Houston? Thanks, as always, for your interesting an informative posts.
  4. Does anyone remember when they started charging admission. I'm thinking it had to have been 10-12 years ago. And when they started, it was 50 cents for kids and I think $2 for adults. In that short period of time admission has skyrocketed to $5 for kids and $10 for adults. That's a prohibitive amount for many families. Families could always turn to the zoo for a day of fun. Then you could go have a picnic in Hermann Park. Good, clean, CHEAP family fun. The article says the zoo is trying to become one of the top 5 zoos in the nation. That's a tall order, especially in our climate. How much of the zoo is air conditioned? With the price increases over the years for the Museum of Natural Science also (with separate fees for the butterfly room, IMAX, parking, etc), you'd have to have at least $150 bucks on hand if you want to take your family of 4 or 5 to that area.
  5. Agreed, but that area desperately needs more retail and neighborhood cafes. When I lived in Garden Oaks and Oak Forest I had to drive to Heights or Montrose for many, many things. It seems like I spent most of my time driving on Shepherd and Durham. Hopefully, they'll lease to some interesting retailers, not just dry cleaners or nail salons.
  6. They're progressing with that new cafe right across the street from Vic & Anthony's (adjacent to the Ben Milam hotel). Construction hasn't been speedy, but it's still going on.
  7. For those who aren't familiar with Camp Logan, it was a WWI training site on what is now Memorial Park. At one point, more than 30,000 men trained there. It was also the site of a riot in 1917 between police and black soldiers that resulted in the declaration of martial law in Houston. Here's a couple of short articles I found: http://www.hal-pc.org/~lfa/BB17.html http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online...s/CC/qcc26.html
  8. Urban archaeology. I love it! There must be some other cool stuff down there, too. Let us know if you find out more. Does anyone have a photo of the old hotel?
  9. No, it was a boy... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billie_%22Buckwheat%22_Thomas I loved the Little Rascals.
  10. Here's a thread on the Camden City Centre... http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...?showtopic=4472
  11. I hadn't noticed. But it would seem to me to be journalistically erroneous to leave out County.
  12. Their Asia Society Texas web site says... "Groundbreaking for Asia House, to be located in the Museum District, will take place in late 2007, with formal dedication projected in 2009. "
  13. I took a Leisure Learning canoe trip down the bayou. We dropped in under the Shepherd pass and finished at Allen's Landing. I wouldn't want to try it upstream.
  14. It's called the Boardwalk Bullet. You don't want to go on the annoying kemah boardwalk web site, so go here: http://www.coasterphotos.com/Kemah/index.htm ...and click on the link "View Weekly Construction Photos here"
  15. Wherever Arlen is fictionally located, "King of the Hill" is one of the smartest, funniest tv shows on right now. I'm glad they've kept it this long, and I'm hoping for at least a few more years.
  16. I think it Arlen is supposed to be a suburb of D/FW. Hence the names of the schools -- Tom Landry Middle School and Roger Staubach Elementary School. However, I know there have been other things in the show that make people believe it's in other areas.
  17. It's beautiful. Let's hope someone who cares about the architecture snaps it up quick.
  18. I saw many concerts and events there over the years, but my husband and I did get to see the LAST concert ever held there -- ZZ Top (with Cross Canadian Ragweed opening) performing in the fall of 2003. It was great.
  19. Now there's an assignment for an adventurous HAIFer. And bring back photos!
  20. It could be just that the trailer has more modern music to attract viewers, but the series would have period music. Or it could be a bomb, like last year's movie "Marie Antoinette" which featured modern music including "I Want Candy."
  21. My sister brought this to my attention -- The AMC network is producing an original series called "Mad Men" about the advertising industry in the early 60s in New York City. The trailer and gallery don't show much of the set, but if you're a fan of mid-century modernism, I'm sure the show will be a feast for your eyes. http://media.amctv.com/originals/madmen/ The series' executive producer was also executive producer and writer on "The Sopranos." Should be good. It starts in July.
  22. As much as I don't want someone knocking on my door or approaching me on public property to talk to me about their religion, it would be worse if that right was taken away.
