  1. This is a very nice, friendly area in a great location -- keep looking there, especially along Castle Ct. There are many duplexes for rent at any given time. I drop my kid off at Lanier MS (Westheimer at Woodhead) every day, and there is a 2-1 for rent on Harold directly across from the school. If you don't mind school traffic, that's another great location.
  2. citykid09: Can you update the coding on the images at the top of this thread. They're coded to go to the "current" issue of the magazine and not the February 07 issue. EDIT: Thanks!
  3. Let's post a picture of the house that eventually takes its place, too. Maybe the home had major issues and couldn't be saved easily. But since it did have historical value, it's a shame it's gone. Thanks for posting.
  4. You guys have been busy! Thanks for some seriously fun Saturday morning reading.
  5. Yes, of course -- they're two different things. If you're preserving a historic house for preservation's sake, you keep it as is (e.g. Rienzi, Bayou Bend, etc). If you're living in a house that has architectural value, you should strive to update it to preserve the architectural integrity (e.g., no Tuscan kitchens in a mod home). I'm not an architect, nor a designer, but I think the home you linked to is a beautiful example of updating within the original style.
  6. Lynn Edmunson of Historic Houston said that they will accept salvage items from mid-century modern homes for their Salvage Warehouse which is open to the public. Light fixtures, bath and kitchen fixtures, architectural details, hardware, etc., are accepted. She said "while it is just on the cusp of being historic...lots and lots of those houses are being renovated...and just like the older houses...the material can't be found. Feel free to give my contact information to anyone you know that is doing a renovation...or who is tearing down a house." So, here's her contact information: Lynn Edmundson, Founder and Executive Director Historic Houston 713-522-0542 Salvage Warehouse 1307 W. Clay Houston, Texas 77019 http://www.historichouston.org/newSite/home.htm
  7. Yes, it's open to the public. But don't wear shorts or a sleeveless shirt or you won't be able to go into the temple itself. And be prepared to take off your shoes. It is worth the effort to go see.
  8. The cafe is not actually in the hotel building -- but next door, directly across from Vic & Anthony's. But I would hope this would spur something to happen in the hotel building itself.
  9. It was the site of a hotel -- don't remember which chain -- maybe Motel 6 or similar. Don't know what's going up but I'm anxious to find out. Anybody?
  10. Weslayan and Richmond -- the former site of the HISD Headquarters building. See this thread: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...c=2169&st=0
  11. Born in St. Joseph's hospital -- as was my mother and my son. But as a female -- I can't endorse your acronym
  12. They certainly didn't time construction right, did they? It would have been great to start off the baseball season with the new cafe. But I'm just thrilled SOMETHING is going on there now.
  13. There is a sign on this lot (next to the Ben Milam Hotel) that says a new cafe is going to be built. I think it said the name was B&W Cafe. This is great -- especially if it's open before/after Astro's games. And it's great for the folks staying at the Inn at the Ballpark -- a less expensive option than Vic & Anthony's.
  14. We have an investment property just outside the College Station city limits, and it would cost us about $240 a year for garbage service! I just bring my trash home to Houston when I need to. But it's only one bag every couple of weeks. Houston needs the new Plasma Converter that turns garbage to energy -- amazing but true http://www.popsci.com/popsci/science/873aa...ecbccdrcrd.html
  15. The Chronicle today has an article on the best public high schools in the area. Here is its top tier list, created by the nonprofit group Children at Risk: 1. HSPVA (Houston) 2. YES College Prep (Charter) 3. Cinco Ranch (Katy) 4. Debakey H.S. for Health Professions (Houston) 5. Memorial High School (Spring Branch) 6. Clements High School (Ft Bend) 7. Taylor High School (Katy) 8. Friendswood High School (Friendswood) 9. Clear Lake High School (Clear Creek) 10. Stephen F. Austin High School (Ft Bend) The article online doesn't have the list -- or at least I can't find it (it's early ) http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/4678053.html
  16. I like the view from right right field also, but the left-field view is the one I see each time I go, and it can be very nice. As it was last night in particular.
  17. You couldn't get this view at the dome... I know some of you hate the courthouse in the distance. But it's still a nice view on a nice night. We've had season tickets for several years, and I still like going. It's a great ballpark, IMHO. Go 'stros! Let's hope for a fun season.
  18. I don't know how much faith you have in the Houston Press, but here is its ranking of the best public high schools in the Houston area: 1. Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions (Houston ISD) 2. The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Houston ISD) 3. YES College Preparatory School (state charter) 4. Memorial High School (Spring Branch ISD) 5. Clements High School (Fort Bend ISD) 6. Aldine High School (Aldine ISD) 7. Friendswood High School (Friendswood ISD) 8. Eastwood Academy High School (Houston ISD) 9. James E. Taylor High School (Katy ISD) 10. Kingwood High School (Humble ISD) http://www.houstonpress.com/2006-03-02/new...in-houston/full http://www.houstonpress.com/2006-02-23/new...c-high-schools/
  19. Dude, it's not like anyone is holding out on you. If anyone knew, they'd say. How do you know it's even in Houston, and why did you put it under "Holy Places"?
  20. His name is Rodrigo Santoro, and apparently he's like the Brad Pitt of Brazil. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodrigo_Santoro I guess he's on Lost to help him reach the American audience. It was a really good episode -- very different than what I expected.
  21. This is so true, but hopefully it will change a little thanks to the good folks on this forum and at Houston Mod.
  22. We always had a "big car" -- which was usually a Country Squire or something similar -- and a "little car" which was a four-door sedan, like a Chevy Nova. ("Which car are we taking, mom, the big car or the little car?" That way we didn't have to keep up with whatever model we had at any given time.) We always bought used cars. My parents never had a new car until a few years ago.
  23. Is this it? http://www.visithoustontexas.com/visitors/request_guide
