  1. I admit I have not been to this place in a couple of months but that is some shocking news. They easily beat the Aquarium as far as seafood. It really does seem like downtown is re-inventing itself every few years for better or worse.
  2. It would be cool if this was built around an actual traffic circle. Would be cool to see such density around something like Mecom Fountain and to have the canyon effect of the villas on each street leading to the circle. Nice architecture and landscape architecture but the gated concept blows.
  3. LOL. Figures. I knew I could count on you. Why would most not agree? I am all for hearing both sides but sometimes it seems like these comments are used solely to spark conversation.
  4. I think the top could have been simpler actually. Something like Museum Tower on Montrose could have still looked nice IMO at the 500 foot mark.
  5. At the expense of sounding too literal again , you do know that Republicans were not exactly leaning to the right back in the day and African Americans were mostly Republicans, while they vote close to around 90% for Dems today in presidential elections. I do not think I need to mention the economical factors of freeing slaves rather than moral reasoning. I am not saying only one group embraces diversity, I think it is more regional as far as how people come up with those conclusions. As a minority who votes to the left as far as parties and social issues most of the time, I can say I could probably vote for some Republicans in other regions of the country, but that is another thread.
  6. Uhh I knew it was joke and I also realize that a joke can be factual. I hope that didn't actually bother you that much or am I being literal again.
  7. I believe Reefmonkey was saying there are no parts of N.O. that are above sea level, although I do believe the French Quarter is the high ground of the city and might be above sea level. I am not sure.
  8. Well Tipping Point is finally open. Went there this afternoon to pick up some sneakers. It is a very nice store and they made the most out of the small sapce they have. Very minimalistic interior design inside almost like a musuem space complete with a lowrider bike in the middle of the store. I thought they were kind of brave for opening so far from the Pavilions opening date but the guy working there said he believes he will benefit with more items coming in. Prices are very good for a small business.
  9. I don't get your last sentence but for the most part it is true and for all the B.S. the Muslim community goes through these days, they seem the most "cliquish" of the different groups at U of H. Any person or student does not need to spend a week on campus to know this. I am not calling for conformity or the whole "melting pot" or what some people call white wash, but you can still go outside your "comfort zone" without losing your culture or who you are.
  10. Those stories aren't as interesting, so you probably wouldn't care to hear them in the first place. It is not the ACLU's fault that these stories almost exclusively are the only ones that make the news. This news is not surprising, [sarcasm]but we all know she is talking about the God of all faiths.[/sarcasm]
  11. Have you been to San Diego in the past two years?
  12. All there would need to be is a disruption of the grid in downtown or a dead end to make something like this happen. With that said, I can not think of any design that would fit our skyline with something that tall. I don't know how they did it, but as tall as the Burj is in Dubai, it seems to fit with what is planned for the area. I feel kind of stupid debating this building anyway. I echo Simbha's sentiments.
  13. It's simply land use mixed with aesthetics. It is not so much that there needs to be a solution for parking, but not taking up large swaths of land for parking in a booming area like the Med Center has a simple solution which is structured parking.
  14. If anything, this is probably the reason why so many outsiders believe we do not have that much park space. These parks are HUGE but are located in sparsely populated areas. We can use more Hermann Parks and pocket block sized parks that can be found in areas like the Montrose. As large as Memorial Park is, everytime I go it seems like a lot of parts are not built for people. Almost feels like an unmanicured forest in the middle of the city rather than park space.
  15. About time someone else mentions this. There are still some people who think if there is simply a sidewalk, walking should not be a problem and the demand for walkable establishments in places like Midtown will come when people protest and walk among strip centers. Frankly I know those people just do not care about the subject, because I am sure their walking habits would not reflect that.
  16. That area of town is called Deira. That may be an easier seacrh than Dubai. Here is a better view. The Parisian density is found around the creek. Sorry for the size but it will shrink:
  17. Don't be fooled. There are older parts of Dubai that have the "foreign" density that you see in most international cities. It is just that a lot or most of the new development is happening in the parts that the original Dubai did not sprawl upon yet.
  18. LOL. No I guess Houston does. Those pics were not intended at all. Just look at how many VW's are in front of American Apparel. Definitely did not wait for them to come. Thanks guys.
  19. It's not a choice but just because people do not consciously know that they did not make a choice does not mean someone was born that way. It's still up in the air in my opinion and too complex for someone to give such a direct answer on both sides.
  20. There is also a cafe on the 43rd(?) floor of the Wedge Building. Great views of western Midtown and the Montrose and also downtown. They also have an outside deck you can step on just without a camera or when it is raining. Here's one pic I took from the joint.
