  1. man this thread was a rollercoaster. first we hated the vines. then we loved them. now we all agree they need to be trimmed up a bit. this has always been one of my favorite stretches of highway, (partly due to the vines on the walls, and partly due to the cool bridges), so im really glad they are re lighting the bridges with some proper LEDs. now if they could just trim the vines back a little (though i kind of like the way the vines have grown on some of the light poles).
  2. yes there has been some news on this over the past few months.. "The scope of this study is 26 miles of State Highway (SH) 288 from US 59 in Harris County to County Road 60 in Brazoria County. Current Conditions The current roadway features 2 to 4 general purpose lanes in each direction separated by a grassy median. Proposed Improvements Construction of toll lanes within the existing grassy medianDirect-connector improvements at Interstate Highway 610 and at Beltway 8New overpasses at select existing at-grade intersectionsImproved access to the Texas Medical CenterPartners This study is a partnership between TxDOT and the Federal Highway Administration." http://www.txdot.gov/inside-txdot/projects/studies/houston/sh288.html looks like the 288/beltway interchange is going to be made into a 5 stack interchange. its about time.. i wonder what they will do at the 610 interchange? possibly another 5 stack? its a little more "confusing" of a situation though.
  3. how is Houston scared to build tall? i agree after the bust in the 80s.. but 5AC is "only" 50 floors.. Houston is already going to build the over 800', 50+ story Chevron Tower, and the 49 story 757' Hines tower, with more tall towers proposed. its the biggest boom since the 80s.
  4. there are rumors that they already have a tenant secured. good question though.. hopefully there are more tenants interested in downtown with all the new proposals we have.
  5. dude seriously? you bumped an old thread to make a smart ass remark about the excitement factor of downtown (which has drastically been getting better if you havent been paying attention)? the title clearly says its in the Galleria area.
  6. Agreed with both posts.. Very exciting times for Houston, and the list is sure to keep growing. I'm not sure I would consider a 38 story building to be a midrise though.. (New residential tower at Texaco redevelopment site), lol. Don't forget all the new hotels too.. The Marriott Marquis will be at least 30 stories. Can't wait for Houston 2017.. Downtown is going to be a completely different place.
  7. the best part of the garage! heh.. too bad they couldnt put some storefronts on the bottom of Skyhouse along Main. i guess they wanted to put a nice entrance there instead.
  8. i was just looking through these renderings again noticed you can see 6 new buildings in this picture. pretty neat. will the new 38 story Texaco redevelopment tower be visible from these angles too or will it be hidden behind Hines and International Tower? i wonder how tall Hines Market Square residential tower will be.
  9. Yeah I finally realized that after I went to street view and saw where the old cabos was. I knew the 10ish story towers on the east side of the block were staying, I was just under the impression from reading the new article that El Big Bad was going on the same site as Hines tower. The article just said the same block.
  10. I just read per urbannizers post on another forum that this is scheduled to be "officially" announced later this year, with a projected ground breaking of next year? Has anyone else heard this?
  11. haha, i dont think Hines were planning on tearing down Franks, but i assumed from the article that this El Big Bad would go on the corner nearest Market Square, thats currently a parking lot. i just looked at Google Earth street view though and apparently am mistaken. i didnt realize Cabo was on the southwestern corner of the block. now that i see where Cabo was, and El Big Bad is going, next to Franks Pizza, it looks like the parking lot will still be vacant/available for Hines to develop. i was worried for a minute that a restaurant was going to be built on the property Hines wanted to build this residential tower on. does anyone know when we should hear more on this property/what exactly Hines being "under contract to buy up a downtown block" means? obviously they are interested in the land but what does the whole "under contract to buy" part mean?
  12. It looks like El Big Bad is going in on the site Hines was said to develop this residential Market Square tower on. anyone have any idea what this means for the Hines development? i agree, a thread title change might be good since we already have a dedicated Hines museum tower thread but no dedicated thread for the Hines downtown residential tower. http://swamplot.com/el-gran-malo-to-open-english-language-version-downtown/2013-08-02/
  13. these pictures make me really hope that 5AC undergoes a major redesign before ( if ) it gets built.. its way too prominent when your driving down 45 and sticks out away from the rest of the skyline. maybe some set backs and a spire or something if they want to keep the overall building close to the same proportions?
  14. I don't mean to get off topic, but I don't know where else to ask without starting a new thread. Does anyone know what's happening to the old days inn building that's vacant?
  15. Oh I forgot we have 2 threads on this. That's probably why tothesky didn't notice the new renderings. And nativehoustonion.. It's 756'9".. Totally 757'.. That extra foot matters! Heh. I agree tangledwoods. Chevron will be prob be at least 800'. I factored the height to floor ratios and 800' would put a 58 floor equivalent building (what the Chevron rendering shows) at less than 13.8' per floor.
  16. Haha, no worries. So you don't think the 757' 49 story floor plans posted by lockmat are official?
  17. thats what i was thinking, but i couldnt ever get a response back from the person. i guess it was more out of the designated flight paths than anything.
  18. if only this car werent in the picture... heres an alright one if you cropped out the highway. OLD though, dated May 2001. it would need some work to be updated.. 1500 Louisiana is in the distance being topped off. Missing BG of course and all the activity around Discovery Green, if you were planning on putting the Marriott Marquis in the shot. heres a good north east angle where you might be able to include the Marriott with Hines and International Tower. will Skanksas tower be visible from this angle (i know its rather "short"), not sure if it would be behind one of the taller buildings or not.
  19. it would be awesome if someone photoshopped the tower to be closer in height to the 41 story version, but you can tell this will still be very prominent from the north side. this really needs to get built! hope no one minds me posting this. it was on another site and the cropped version of this rendering has already leaked.
  20. interesting article. im sure he is talking about the Hines redevelopment too (but hes assuming the Chevron tower will only be 50 stories, not sitting on top of a podium making the tower closer in height to a 58 story building). the crown will make Hines taller than 50 stories, but the podium will make Chevron taller than Hines. im thinking ~800', but im no expert. as for the rumors. someone replied to a post of mine once mentioning Hines owning a plot located in an area that allowed/was basically designated for a supertall? anyone have any idea what lot this would be?
