  1. Due to work and personal schedule, I'm searching for some place to get a manicure / pedicure that is open until at least 8 pm. Prefer Midtown - Heights - Oak Forest area. Any suggestions?
  2. The River Oaks building is long gone. There are townhomes/apartments there now. It was on S. Shepherd, on the West side of the street, inbetween Welch and Indiana.
  3. Rather cryptic....what do you mean by that?
  4. Heck, I didn't see this. This right around the corner from mi casa!
  5. Back on topic, I've always enjoyed Steamboat Bills in Lake Charles. (On I-10 as soon as you cross the big bridge). They serve pistelettes which are soft rolls, which are quick fried (think donut but not sweet), and then filled with either shrimp or crawfish etouffee. Mmmm mmm good!
  6. Went to Gilhooleys 2 weeks ago. Oysters were exceptionally good! Large size and very plump. Oh, I could go again!
  7. I need to set up an alumni happy hour in the Galleria area and am looking for suggestions for location. It should be a mixed age crowd from mid 20s to 50s. Maybe 30 people or so. Any suggestions?
  8. I studied at Miss Hallies from 1974- 1982 or so when she retired. The upstairs was also off limits to us, as the roof was in terrible condition. I remember going up there once and there were huge holes in the roof with 55 gal drums underneath the holes to catch the rain. There were many pigeons that inhabited the upstairs. She not only taught Ann Miller, but also Tommy Tune, and I studied there with Chandra Wilson, who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey on Grey's Anatomy.
  9. Great shots. Love the one with the ferris wheel. Someone needs to take some shots from the street overpasses at The Pavillions. Those offer great views.
  10. I believe the Ford plant was on Harrisburg, not Preston St. It's current site of the coffee plant (used to be Maxwell House, now it's some other name).
  11. This building is the old Federal Reserve building that will be renovated for use by the Diocese. From what I understand, the basement (maybe it's the ground floor, but I was told basement) where the money used to be housed, will be for the Diocesan archives.
  12. I know! I shopped at Party City a few weeks ago and the prices are easily 20% higher. I feel like that old Mervyn's commercial - OPEN! OPEN! OPEN!
  13. I love "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg. You know....Met my old lover at the grocery store - the snow was falling Christmas Eve.... I always tear up whenever I hear that song.
  14. Flying Saucer Pie Company on Crosstimbers, just East of Shepherd. Be prepared for a long line.
  15. This happened to my mother about 10 years ago and her 1983 Mercedes diesel. She went to an car wash where Exxon gas was sold. The attendent filled it up with gas instead of diesel. Severly damaged the engine. After getting an attorney and threatening to sue, Exxon paid for the repairs.
  16. McCain / Palin. I'm a capitalist, not a socialist.
  17. [quote name='RedScare' post='287798' date='Friday, October 31st, 2008 @ 4:01am' What's everyone got planned? I'm guessing Red did not remember to get candy for trick-o-treaters tonight, so I'm hoping all he'll have to give out is beer.
  18. Best line from that movie - "Son, you got a panty on your head."
  19. I used Perez Landscaping on 34th street in June for a major landscape re-do at my Oak Forest ranch home. By that, I mean that my entire front yard was taken down to just dirt and and completely redone - new sod, build new beds, new plants. He was FAR cheaper than the other 2 estimates I got. I thought he did a good job. However, be forwarned, they are not the best about calling back or showing up on time or at all for an appointment. But, for the job that they did and the price they charged, I think I received a good value. Their website is here
  20. My grandfather worked at that Ford plant in the 1920's. He worked there until he hurt his back around 1925-1926. He then opened a corner grocery store and butcher shop in the Heights. I remember he had a company photo of all of the workers at that Ford plant. The picture was huge - maybe 30 inches long or so.
  21. I have visited Brenner's on the Bayou about 6 times in the past year, and have always been very pleased with the food and service. Their crab cakes are some of the best I have ever had. Wonderful steaks and great brunch.
  22. Power back on in parts of Mangum Manor and some parts of Oak Forest (west side of OF). Feel very luck that only off approx 36 hours. 2 sides of the wooden fence is down - satellite dish knocked off roof (will be until Oct 4th before repairs are made! - more internet time for me!!), a little water under sliding glass doors due to force of wind. Tree limbs everywhere - some trees down. All in all, not too bad. Hope everyone is ok and I truly hope you all get power and a/c soon!
