  1. Any info on this building? There are still 7 units in foreclosure in this building, according to the HAR website. Is this another Tremont Towers in the making?
  2. Guys, I don't think this is spam. If it was, don't you think they would have at least spell-checked for misspelled words and grammar?
  3. Eyes of Texas Here is a link to one of the episodes....
  4. Ok, I know the West Alabama Ice House allows dogs. Where else can you go and bring your well behaved canine? Does Barnaby's allow dogs? What about Niko Nikos? Any other suggestions?
  5. I live in Mangum Manor and am very happy there. It has an active civic association and has fairly low crime. I just threw away my civic assoc newsletter and I think there were maybe 3 incidents in the entire neighborhood in the last month - maybe one home burglary and 2 car break ins. I don't remember exactly. I frequently walk the neighborhood, and around the park at Costa Rica and Saxon, and have never felt uncomfortable. Meanwhile, my parent's home in the Heights has had their garage broken into 5 times in the last month! Just their garage!! As far as flooding, be careful of homes that back up to Brickhouse Gully. Those homes do have a tendency to flood. Also, just for point of reference, the house 4 doors down from me just sold for $169K at approx 1350 sf. I believe Mangum Manor is all south of 43rd. Forest Pines is north of 43rd, but is still a nice addition, but is closer to Pinemont and points north and the Katrinaville apartments. Let me know if you want any more info.
  6. Ok, this is very crude, but pic manipulation isn't my thing... Tito's next ad should be this map, with Texas including all of Mexico with the caption TITOLATING TO THINK ABOUT
  7. Well, Emirate, how did the date go?
  8. I have a friend that just bought a home on 18th, but I haven't talked to him in a long while. I'll see if he knows anything.
  9. Just kicking around the idea of purchasing a vacant lot and building a home or possibly moving a Heights bungalow onto a lot and renovating. Is there a general rule of thumb one should figure when it comes to building a new home as far as price per square foot? What about the possibility of moving a 1920's bungalow onto the property and renovating? What could I expect for costs? (Besides moving the home to the lot). Just dreaming.....
  10. Well, I can't figure out how to post the pic, but there is a Bob Bailey photo of the Grasshopper in 1939. Looks very much like it looks today. It's in the Center of American History photos. Pic is a bottom of page. 500 main pic
  11. Ok, West Loop. Yes, Malibu Fun Center and Castle Golf and Games. There were side by side. This brings up an interesting question - where does the Loop change from the West Loop to the North Loop? Once it intersects 290?
  12. Noticed this morning on the way to work that some of the structures at the old Castle Golf and Games have been torn down. Not hauled away, just sitting in big piles of rubble. Didn't notice as I was speeding by if the "For Sale" sign was still there or not. Does anyone know what's going on?
  13. Another McDonald's on the corner of W 43rd and US 290 has also been competely town down and looks to be starting from scratch. Is McDonald's undergoing a change in their format? New look? New menu?
  14. Ok, since we're talking about Sheila Jackson Lee and her obsession with the TV camera, I have to share this story with you. A good friend of mine has a classic mustang convertible and is often asked to drive City Council members, State Reps, etc in local parades. One day, in a parade, his car was directly behind the convertible that drove Ms. Lee. A reporter was walking beside her car, asking her questions, as the parade proceeded. My friend made it a point to honk his horn and wave to the crowd everytime the reporter put the microphone to Ms. Lee. Eventually, she turned around and gave him the "Go to Hell" look. It was beautiful.
  15. Thanks for the suggestions. I already have an email into Pub Fiction, so we'll see where that gets us. Any other ideas?
  16. Need to set up a happy hour for my Alumni association and I'm looking to HAIFers for some suggestions. These are the main criteria I'm searching for: Prefer downtown or Midtown area Prefer something that would appeal to wide age range Free appetizers would be nice, if possible Any suggestions?
  17. I'm so glad you posted that! I was racking my brain, thinking, where in the H-E-double matchsticks is 225 inside the loop!
  18. Wow. Talk about hijacking a thread. From Wal-Mart overshadowing Kroger in the Houston grocery market to nymphs and centaurs. Exactly which aisle are nymphs on?
  19. My favorites are the entrances to the freeways, on the left side, coming into the fast lane. Best 2 examples - Telephone leading into 45N and Shephard into 45N. Most of the time I just close my eyes and hit the gas.
  20. Went by Antidote the other morning - great coffee and great prices! Two thumbs up!
  21. Have a business associate coming into town next Saturday. Want to get together for lunch. The optimal location would be somewhere between IAH and Beltway/I-10 West. Many restaurants that I've thought about (Taste of Texas, Churrascos) aren't open for lunch on a Saturday. Would prefer a restaurant that is not a chain. Doesn't have to be fancy, but would prefer something a little upscale. Any and all suggestions are welcome!
  22. Or, just go to Teotihuacan and ask to buy chips for 50 people. It probably wouldn't be much more expensive than Chema and you'll know exactly what kind of chip you are getting.
