I wonder. Because we are becoming a world renowned city, if we should have an identifying element to our city. Believe it or not, we are considered a sister city to Paris. SO, why not have a consortium which places amazing fountains in key places around our fair city. Thoughts? We have some really nice ones, but if some sort of cause helped the Fountains of Houston organization, where would you all like to see ground breaking fountains in Houston?

Fountainview...does it have one??

A couple/few along a renewed Post Oak streetscape would be very nice. Some pedestrians may even eventually enjoy them.

Not one...three.  I think they may have been built by the developer of the apartments that line the street between Burgoyne and Inwood.

And they all are so well maintained and look like a million bucks. The pot holes on the street actually match their condition.

Yes, and that makes me wonder if they fall under the city's jurisdiction for maintenance since they are in the median. That sort of thing is why I was asking who is responsible for maintaining the new bagby street landscaping.

Kansas City does fountains very well. Left a huge positive impression after my visit.

Really?   They like to call themselves the city of fountains or some such, but I've been to KC many many times and never saw any great number of fountains and cannot now recall any that were particularly noteworthy.  I personally think Houston already has KC beat in the fountain department.

Houston has some nice ones. I love the Wortham Fountain on Allen Pkwy and the Waterwall is amazing. The fountains at UH are fine. The flowing water at the Wortham Theater downtown is nice as well.

I just wrote it from a combination of memory and a little bit of google searching.  I invite contributions of additional fountains I have overlooked/haven't gotten to.

One I can think of is the fountain at the center of Regency Square, off the Southwest Freeway. It is in the center of Savoy Drive and is in the middle of a somewhat informal traffic circle. It isn't a small fountain either...

I don't think we can really count fountains at apartment complexes or corporate buildings as public.  If that is the case then there are thousands more fountains all around in the myriad retention ponds, residential developments out in the "burbs" and elsewhere.

No one actually said anything about the fountains being "public".  This list was started as a comparison to Kansas City's list of fountains, which includes fountains in shopping centers and other privately-owned fountains and also includes suburban fountains.  I have included all fountains that are in locations that are generally visible by the public.  Since I do not see any indoor fountains in KC's list, I have not included indoor fountains on our list either.

Feel free to add the thousands more fountains all around the metro area of which you are aware.  ;-)

Ah. I see.  I looked at just a few on there and didn't see that there were some at Cabela's and at other commercial entities.

How odd to list "The Fountains at Cabela's" as a source of pride on a civic minded website (for a city that size).

Then count on my good man - count on... but you may want to leave the Woodlands fountains off (since that techically isn't Houston)?

Again, the Kansas City list also includes suburban fountains, so metro area it is.

Then don't forget Galveston.  The city actually has quite a few smaller public fountains that were donated by wealthy individuals a century ago so horses could have access to water.  They may not spray as high, but most of them still work I believe.

I had not forgotten Galveston, just had not gotten to it yet.  Please contribute listings as you can.

(and if one looks carefully at the pictures of the Kansas City fountains, I'm not so sure "working" is even a requirement.  Several of KC's look bone-dry.)

Seriously you are putting this on the list? I took fountain view today just for this thread.

Bow down in defeat world, this is your new Fountain God.

A gravity-defying, vertical-mounted fountain!  The world better bow down in defeat! ;)

Yes. Seriously. It's a fountain. It's on the list. Get over it.

It's an embarrassment. Sorry the photo shows up rotated like that. When I posted it, it was normal.

Anyways, continue with your list, Just promise me you won't forget to add the royal blue colored water fountains found at the nearest put-put coarse near you.

P.S. Also please add the 2 story fountains in the Lobby of the Sawyer Heights Lofts.  ;)

This is sad. I love Houston and I only included the list of KC Fountains because you were claiming KC didn't really impress you. Sure, that list had some suburban fountains and some in malls, but the public fountains are impressive when you consider the size differential of the two cities. I have a bird feeder in my back yard, do you want to add it to the list?

I am a fourth generation Houstonian, but we do ourselves no favors when we compile stupid lists like "most theatre seats in a theatre district outside of Broadway" or list ever damn fountain no matter how small, how unaccessible, or how ugly just to show a city with 1.8 million fewer residents that we are the BOSS.

Relax.  No one is trying to claim we are the BOSS based on a list of fountains.  Just compiling a list of Houston's fountains for comparison and out of curiosity.

I enjoyed the KC list you posted and am glad that someone in KC had the pride in their city to compile the list (such a list in Houston would obviously be dismissed as "stupid").  KC has a nice collection of fountains, most of which even appear to have water in them ;-)

What is sad is the constant self-loathing of so many Houstonians.  Why must we dismiss any list or claims made about Houston as "stupid," but lists and claims made by other cities (like, for example, "the most fountains of any city outside Rome") are apparently to remain unquestioned and uncompared?

We do ourselves no favors when we refuse to be aware of, recognize or acknowledge what we have in Houston.
