lockmat
I like it. I hope they include a nice restaurant and upscale bar--they would be great additions for the area. This hotel is geared towards people in visiting the TMC. I think the design is modest because they're being considerate of the reason people are there. I have doubts that they will try to make too flashy, not that upscale or nice necessarily is, but I don't think they're looking to be trendy. But that's just my hunch.
HoustonBoy
Is there any new news about this one? I really hope so.
Luminare
They need a lot of things in this area period. While it looks like a busy downtown area, it always seemed like a commuter destination and that there was nothing immediately around the area to make it a truely functional urban core. Would be nice if more apartments/condos/hotels/ anything for that matter were intermixed in this part of town or at least within walking distance of the TMC. This will also help relieve the demand for parking. Not to mention it's in a great area of town with lots of things to do.

cloud713
great news! this one has grown on me. i think i like it even more now than when it first came out. seems like the perfect fit for the TMC.
toxtethogrady
Working backwards, I'm guessing this one's still on target to begin construction early in 2015. Three months either side of that timeline aren't going to make a difference. Edited August 19, 2014 by toxtethogrady

OkieEric
There was a Bank of America drive through there before, so I guess they are just replacing it...seems like good real estate for what I'm sure will be a generic bank branch, but then again across Main St is a Pizza Hut
Subdude
It was a while back, but at one point I think that triangle of land (Holcombe, Main, Old Main) was proposed for a sort of gateway monument for the Med Center.  We have a thread about it somewhere.
toxtethogrady
2017's a long 12 months. Any idea when it would start?
Fortune
Hotel/residential towerLocation: South Main, north of HolcombeDeveloper: Houston-based TRC Capital Partners and Houston-based Medistar Corp.Original plan: In April, developers said they would start construction later in the year on an HOK-designed 22-story hotel/residential building next to the Texas Medical Center.Update: "We've been working on refining the programming and putting together the financing package," TRC president and CEO Steve Lerner said, adding that a start date has not been determined.http://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/real-estate/article/Cracks-forming-in-commercial-real-estate-market-6037038.php#/0

Luminare
That's amazing news! I originally thought...wow they really changed the design...oh wait I see the original...wait is this two towers now? ....wait they are building this an a res tower next to it? lol I still like the first building. The other building has a little to much masonry for me, but it has clean lines and has good massing. I wish they would just combine the parking garage. Maybe that would have lowered the amount of levels of parking overall? I don't know. Overall it's nice that we actually here about a project getting scaled up rather than scaled down.

OkieEric
Just noticed the link shows that this will be an Intercontinental Hotel. Â Not bad... Â I'm wondering how Southgate residents will take this 32 story tower. Â Not really an Ashby situation if you've got property adjacent to the medical center

kdog08
Hopefully medical tourism could catch on, could fit a few more hotels along this stretch. More mixed use in TMC would be welcome.

rechlin
The hotel seems to have lost a few stories in the new rendering, with a bit less striking of a design (balconies are smaller and the "hole" in the corner is a lot smaller), but I'm glad to see the addition of the residential tower! And things always seem to get scaled back so I'm not too surprised they made the changes. This will be a great addition to the medical center. Plus it means a lot more people will be able to walk to work!
Subdude
The design of the residential tower seems a bit sad sack to me, but that said it's great to see more high rise development near the Med Center.  Btw I love that aerial shot of the Med Center!
Avossos
I actually like the residential tower. A nice mix of materials and provies a nice height. I think it will be a great addition to the area. Living near Rice and Med Center and close to Hermann Park sounds pretty good, especially if work is not too far away. When does it start?

If they were going to stick in remembered icons of another era, they should have added the Shamrock. I still have to wonder what kind of finances are behind Medistar and whether they can pull this off. If nothing else, the residential building shows they're ambitious.
