I spoke with a friend this morning who brought up this property. She said that some existing site utility issues at McAlpine St. were being finalized and that the multifamily development is now moving forward. The building design and total levels is not yet finalized but it will be a mid-rise with surface parking at Level 1 and a concrete podium above with residential levels stacked. This is a Padua property and there are rumblings about Hines, to what extent I am not sure. I asked about Marquette Cos. and received shoulder shrugs. Please consider all of the above the be "water cooler" talk. I do know that this development is moving forward, whether is goes beyond final design and pricing is uncertain. Or perhaps this is all posturing in an effort to push the land sale? This info should make things as clear as mud.12 points

"Chevron is selling its San Ramon headquarters property in California and plans to downsize while remaining headquartered in the city, while also shifting some workers to Houston." https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/energy/article/Chevron-to-sell-San-Ramon-HQ-property-move-some-17264711.php Sounds like they might do what Exxon did and eventually realize they should just move here completely.5 points

Well, like I said before, this project is not dead yet. Maybe Brightline will step in and save us? Shame that lending markets have tightened up.4 points

I agree that it is tacky. In fact, I find the whole building to be gaudy and ugly. However, Houston has no shortage of sterile glass boxes. I think the city could stand to have a few tasteless, garish, and cheesy buildings. Over the coming decades, for better or worse, this building will be a landmark. No doubt.4 points

So nice to have the buildings along Washington and not the parking.4 points

I get the sentiment. The solution is quite simple, really: don't live in the dead-center of the nation's fourth-largest city. If you can afford to live near Bissonnet and Ashby, you can afford to live just about anywhere else. People have a right to control their own property. But they don't also have a right to control everything else within their eyesight. Especially when they are surrounded by seven million other people who also have their own interests.4 points

A preliminary site plan for Canopy on Washington, Oxberry Group's mixed-use at 3800 Washington Avenue. This is so disingenuous. There will be ZERO added traffic on Wroxton Court, and I really have a hard time believing that the traffic on Bissonnet will be significantly worse, especially considering there were apartments here before (as has been frequently noted in this thread). I don't know if it's a property value issue, or that they just don't want a high rise in their backyard because of privacy or views or whatever... but this is almost right in the center of Houston, there's going to be density whether they like it or not. I can see several high rises from my backyard (in a significantly less dense area of town), and you don't see me crying about it.4 points

This project continues to deliver truly "exceptional" / original design ideas. I have been involved in a number of projects where we demolished tons of that green marble. This dude should not be trusted with a 58 story building!!!!3 points

Marketing materials for 1735 Westheimer Rd show surrounding businesses including the forthcoming wine bar and tapas restaurant chain Barcelona at 1731 Westheimer. The map indicates it's opening Fall 2022. It's possible the opening will be much later like early 2023 or early spring 2023.3 points

The WSJ had an article as well: https://www.wsj.com/articles/chevron-to-downsize-in-california-remain-based-in-the-state-11656103820?st=0c596dvqujc5192&reflink=article_copyURL_share “Some of Chevron’s executives have long wanted to move the company’s headquarters to Texas, but its leadership has held off, largely because of the company’s long history in California and its assets there, such as its Richmond, Calif., refinery, according to people familiar with the matter.” “California lawmakers have previously considered imposing a severance tax that would tax oil production in the state. If California were to impose such a tax, that would likely prompt Chevron to reconsider keeping its headquarters in the state, one of the people said.”2 points

I think this garage is expected to serve the several large buildings they want to build around it so it makes sense to me I feel. I don't think metro rail is extensive enough yet to say the average person who works there can get around on it exclusively.2 points

Is it just me, or is it ironic that a project that's always flogging its environmental/new energy/futurist visions in public is building a parking garage next to a light rail line?2 points

That used to be a bank building, before PP bought it. One of my brothers in law used the bank that was there for his business. Looking at some records, it was originally East End State Bank, and changed its name to Enterprise Bank at some point, and then was merged into Sterling Bank. The original subdivision that building sits on was called Suburban At some point after the acquisition by Planned Parenthood, the property was converted into a condominium.1 point

I feel like so many of these 30-ish story residential high rises look the same. It’s not grand but it’s not ugly. I just sort of feel so-so about most of the shit that has gone up in uptown/downtown. No?1 point

Main Street Tap & Grill closed at 4002 N Main St (I think sometime this year). The property was for sale in October with an asking price of $2,200,000. Listing: https://www.crexi.com/properties/696807/texas-restaurant-building-for-sale-in-the-heights Flyer: Link The Meteor, a cafe from Austin, will operate its business on the property. The Meteor is an all-day cafe with a focus on Roman-style pizzas. It's also a coffee shop, wine bar, and bicycle shop. I think this will be well received, especially by residents living in close proximity. Previous tenant Main Street Tap & Grill was considered a nuisance for noise, trash, and violence, according to many in the neighborhood. More about the Meteor here: https://espressochampagnechainlube.com https://austin.eater.com/2019/10/4/20898840/the-meteor-cafe-natural-wine-bar-bike-shop-open-south-congress-austin-photos1 point

I'm interested to see what they do for the playing surface. I know NRG has hosted CONCACAF matches and other "friendly" high end exhibitions, so they seem to have solved the "trays of green mud" approach used a few years back with the Texans.1 point

2 Immaculate innings in the same game by 2 Astro pitchers against the 3 same Ranger players. Probably a feat that will never be done again.
