  1. In my opinion, “this thing” is actually quite significant for Midtown and the Main Street corridor. It stands on its own merit as a high-quality, well-designed development that elevates the whole area. It’s a major step forward. As for your question, I may be mistaken but I think the next phase breaks ground early next year. The Art Supply building next door is vacated and ready for demolition.

  3. I live within walking distance, on the other side of the Bayou. I’m stoked for this and the wave of development that will occur concurrently and after. You are already seeing the effect of this south of the Bayou, with new townhomes going in, proposed apartments like the one on Fox St, and new retail developments. This will have a drastic positive impact on the East End and the southern portion of Fifth Ward. I can’t wait!

  7. Important pedantry of the day: it's actually "for all intents and purposes", not "for all intensive purposes." But anyway, even if the other buildings don't get built I'd say this tower is pretty significant.

  9. I think that is where the restaurant or food truck or whatever they decide to put in there will go. It has taken forever, but look what was there before. Crickets............ I love to remind the naysayers about their comments that the rail wouldn't produce any significant developments. So it took twenty years. Does anyone have a clue how much money has been spent on developments and how that has affected the tax base. A drive up Main, from Alabama to as far north as you can go looks incredible and so dense.

  16. The lot at 2800 San Jacinto has recently been listed for sale. Strangely, the listing makes no mention of Caydon's tower that's gone up across the street--one would think that would be a big draw for this property: https://www.loopnet.com/Listing/2800-San-Jacinto-Houston-TX/6537096/

  20. This is a massive transit center, drove by it yesterday not realizing the magnitude of the work. Do we know if they are planning to overhaul/renovate the northern transit center or just leaving it as is? I know it has a pretty unique design (with the white pyramids on top and all), but will it need to be modified to handle the new BRT vehicles?

  23. with the exception of Sonic, and Star Pizza I believe each of these is a one-off business? probably some of those businesses are owned by people who have multiple businesses though. sure, most of these places are destinations, but if there's construction and a place is harder to access, there are other destinations that the prospective patrons will go that are easier to access. unless the place offers an experience that is that much better. but you're still going to see a reduction in clientele. as a business owner, the prospect of a reduction in top line revenue for 3-5 years is not something I want to consider, and no matter how many more patrons I might after that 5 years is over, I need to stay in business for the next 5 years to get to that positive outcome.

  24. Wow, they really screwed that one up. It's not like that corner is the hub of downtown excitement; an elegant steakhouse would have been perfect.

  26. I mean, it might be cheap looking but I don't agree at all that it's actually cheaply made. In fact, I think this building is likely to still be rock solid when many of its peers start having serious problems.

  27. I think that is a fair comparison. There is a certain cheapness to it reminiscent of student dorms. It is great to have a wide range of housing options however, these are not much more economic than the "luxury" options up and down the street.
