The Great Hizzy!
In keeping with our sinful indulgence of food and sorts, a Ben & Jerry's is supposedly opening at the Rice between Azuma and Chipotle. The sign's been there since November.

(One of the very few things I miss about Houston)Tollhouse cookies are only good if made fresh from scratch. The stores put weird ingredients in the cookies which make them tase funny. Trust me on this one. I am fat. Thanks for listenting.
The Great Hizzy!
I usually do this every once in a while on a Friday but I had a question about one of these so I decided to just do a full report. 1. Both Nestle's Tollhouse and Ben & Jerry's are working towards opeing up locations on the northern end of DT. Ben & Jerry's seems to be further along, as I now see evidence of furniture being moved in. The Nestle's location has work going on but they have the walls covered in construction paper, making it difficult to see what's actually going in. 2. Morton's Steakhouse at 1001 McKinney. No work yet but people I've talked to inside the building say that they're expecting the restaurant to be up and running by November. 3. A new club/restaurant? A marquee with the word "VENUE" in pretty prominent letters is displayed on the overhang in front of a long vacant retail parcel between The Vault and Mantra. I'm assuming this is another club but it could be a restaurant I suppose. Houston Retail or one of our other crack retail specialists will need to give us more info. 4. The Teahouse. This is one slow opening. The work continues on the parcel but they don't seem to be in a big hurry from what I can tell. They've been working on the unit for about eight months now. 5. They've pretty much successfully rehabilitead the soil where the new DT firestation will be (Pierce, Louisiana, Milam and St. Joseph's). I expect to see cranes and that sort of thing in a couple of months. 6. I've not noticed any new work on the Montagu Hotel but the corner does seem a lot cleaner than a year ago. What would help that corner even more is if the convenience store located next door would invest in a sidewalk scruber and maybe clean the widows. Etc, etc. Anyway, maybe Wyatt Earp can swing by soon and tell us how things are going. 7. Finally, this is more of a question, but does anyone know what happened with Stallone's? Did management have a beef with the owners of the Commerce Tower? Did the lease fall through? It's really weird. They've been closed for months and yet all the furniture and equipment remains. They seem to be doing smashingly well during the three or so months they were open (and the lady who owned the place--name escapes me, unfortunately--really seem to know what she was doing). Just curious as to what happened. Anyone know? Oh, and I still miss Firehouse Philly. That place had incredible cheesesteaks.
GovernorAggie
The Ben and Jerry's does seem to be coming along nicely--albeit rather slow. Also, the Nestle's recently put that construction paper up maybe a week or two ago--until then, I was getting a little concerned because it looked like nothing was happening. I don't know if the fact that they put up paper is encouraging, but they at least put up the paper without taking down the Nestle's signs--I am glad about that. It actually is pretty big inside, I think it used to be a bank, it has the huge arched ceiling and two long rows of bars where I'm sure the tellers used to be. It was a "private" opening, but I liked it on that night. Who knows if it will remain the same now that it is fully open, but I thought it had high potential and I'm not a club guy. Huge stage in front as well with a live band that night, really can handle a lot of different crowds. They even had dancers come out every so often. We'll see if it lasts. Parrothead
I think what we need is a Cereality--screw the cookies, bring on the cereal! http://www.cereality.com Can't you just see this in the Galleria? If I weren't on Atkins I'd be all over some Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter in Chocolate Milk. Oh yeah!!
Original Timmy Chan's
This sounds like another ploy by our elected leaders to get us to pay twice for cookies we've already paid for (and eaten) in the past!!!We need to write to our representatives and tell them to vote NO! on this tollhouse issue! ToolMan
Oh, and I still miss Firehouse Philly. That place had incredible cheesesteaks. May freinds and I were talking Firehouse Philly's just last week. RedSacre used to be one of the owners of that place - he may be able to give us the scoop. At one time a heard they may open one up in the Heights, but that was a long time ago. I've been to quite a few cheasesteak places since and nothing compares. Oh, Ben & Jerry's is open now. Very friendly staff and good ice cream. Edited June 21, 2006 by ToolMan

Meeting with some people this Saturday to discuss some ideas and look at some locations. Probably not in Downtown. More likely in the Washington Ave/Heights area. Damn, rents are going up around here! Can't release too many details. Don't want to give anything away. If I do something with a kitchen, I promise the return of the Cheesesteak! i second that. i wonder what it would take to convince them to reopen... Money, mostly. I hear Dimassi's is opening a mediterranean buffet, similar to the other two, somwhere along the northern section of Travis. I think it will be just north of Market Square. Great Med food!
