It will get you passed the paywall. /edit: passed & past--- silly grammarThanks for the tip. That method seems to get you past the paywall for all the other "digital subscriber only" content as well. Epic fail for Chron web programmers.
lockmat
One of my contractors said 1400 Smith is undergoing renovations and that it is partially empty. He said there is already scaffolding at the base outside. Can anyone verify this? Brookfield's website says there is no space available. hoothrewpoo
1400 Smith, along with 1500 Louisiana (and adjacent parking structures) will undergo fairly significant renovations on the lower levels (1-3), in preparation to be tied in to the new tower. There's a master plan that will renovate the entire Chevron "campus", and connect all of the structures together. Likely what your contractor is seeing/involved in.

It would be odd for Brookfield's site to say they had space available in 1400 Smith, since they sold the building to Chevron a couple years ago. ;-)

I wonder why modifications would be necessary to 1400 Smith, when it is two block from the new tower site and already connected to the intervening building by the circular skywalk... I'm not sure if this contractor has actually been inside or not but he said there is some empty space but he didn't say how much. Since Chevron owns the tower, there's no way for is to really know how much is available, right? Or do those vacancy reports publicly released include owner occupied buildings? ClutchCity
So they could be a quarter empty for all we know Why would they be leasing space in other buildings they don't own then? It's probably just the first 3 floors if they're doing renovations and don't want people in the way.
htownproud
the rumor at Chevron is that some employees are getting moved into one of the Allen Centers because Chevron is at capacity in its two buildings and what it has at Continental. hence, why Chevron will be building a new tower. if any areas in the Chevron buildings are empty, my guess is that Chevron is redoing the build out for some reason (perhaps to hold more folks until the new building is complete).
swtsig
htownproud is correct. i can assure you chevron is not 1/4 empty at either tower.
lockmat
I didn't know they were leasing in another building. All the details are coming together to confirm what some of y'all have been saying. Very Nice

That is a pretty sizable chunk alone, plus whatever else they have. It'll be interesting if they move more people here when they finally announce they'll build it like Exxon did with their campus. hoothrewpoo
when it's all said and done, Chevron will have 4 million sf of owned space in downtown.
lockmat
when it's all said and done, Chevron will have 4 million sf of owned space in downtown. That is essentially one more building about the same size of the others - 1.5mil
ClutchCity
1.5 mil is a pretty big building though. The JP Morgan Chase Tower is like 1.7 mil, but I thought it was mentioned that Chevron's tower would be 48-50ish stories. Does that mean really big floor plates?
Subdude
The Chase Tower footprint is relatively small for the block. Chevron might well be planning a thicker tower.
hoothrewpoo
the new tower will be 1.3M sf, but there will be some infill in the area between 1500 Louisiana and the new tower that bumps up the total.
yaga
Hoothrewpoo - Are there renderings for this tower yet and if so have you seen them? Is this your typical downtown glass tower or will this be a "trophy" tower with a unique design?

swtsig
hoothrewpoo's info matches what i've heard and then some... i guess they'll be trying to create a real campus like feel on the street level which should be interesting. can't wait to see a rendering. knowing some of the players behind the scenes i'd guess pickard is the architect but that's just an estimated guess. Houston19514
Dang, I love Pickard Chilton's work, but I really hope Chevron doesn't use them too. There are still other quality architects in the world. (Pickard Chilton did BG Group Place, the ExxonMobil campus, and is doing the new BHP Billiton Tower and the new Hines tower...) lockmat
I was thinking maybe they'll put three or four stories to connect the two towers, hopefully with some retail to accommodate the employees, bit that's just wishful thinking.
