Did Buffalo Bayou ever run through a pine forest?

Yep. Starting upstream, the Memorial area is/was riparian forest, of which loblolly pines are a prominent species — going farther down the Ship Channel on Beltway 8, look on streetview and you can literally see another whole swath of forest on up until 2018-2021 (clearcutted afterwards).

Cypress trees used to grow in the bayou too like in Louisiana — they were known on Buffalo Bayou, even harvested to build the "Freedmen's town", and specimens also existed on White Oak Bayou as well.

I have read that Brays was a jungly gully too until the forests were destroyed.  But was Sims always closer to the frequently-intermittent-wetland-prairies?

And less close to a bottomland forest biome than the others?

Thank you

Midway released an updated Office Guidebook for East River a few days ago. In the brochure is the latest retail tenant roster.

It appears EaDo Eye Studio is leasing a unit in the mixed-used development. I don't know if it's an optical /eyewear store or not.

According to a recent alcohol application, City Cellars is indeed relocating to East River. The TABC filing lists the restaurant's address as 2859 Riverby Rd.

City Cellars is a locally-owned wine bar and restaurant. It originally opened in the Parc Binz building at 1801 Binz St, Suite 120. Over the summer, CultureMap reported on the restaurant closing its Museum District location. The CultureMap article also noted City Cellars plans to relocate to East River, but there wasn't a lease in place yet.

"However, a representative tells CultureMap that those negotiations are ongoing and have yet to be finalized. Regardless of where the new location winds up being, it's expected to debut in the first quarter of 2024."

Below is a  map from Google Maps showing the location of 2859 Riverby Rd.

Following a recent alcohol application signaling City Cellars' definite relocation to East River, CultureMap reports on the wine bar's new home at 2859 Riverby Rd.

From CultureMap today:

Scheduled to open in the spring of 2024, the new City Cellars will occupy just over 5,000-square-feet near East River’s greenspace. That’s up from the 2,000-square-feet it had at its original location in the Museum District’s Parc Binz... Between the more spacious interior and a 3,000-square-foot patio, total seating capacity will rise from 71 diners at the original to over 250.

Here's the Bisnow article with other details pertaining to East River.

Urbn Dental also will open around the same time as Broham. The three storefronts are among the first retailers advertised for the space,

Wow, I'm loving all the vegetation and how it works and looks so awesome with the wonderful architecture of this area.  This is becoming a magnificent jewel of an addition to downtown Houston !

It appears Kyuramen may be opening an outpost in East River. Earlier this month, an entity was filed for Kyuramen East River LLC. An address was also included: 2920 Riverby Rd, Suite 100.

Based on the address, Kyuramen will be located next to Lick Honest Ice Creams in East River 1 (Building C.)

Kyuramen is a Japanese restaurant specializing in ramen. It expanded to the Houston market earlier this year. The first Houston area location is in Diho Square (9126 Bellaire Blvd). Another is slated for Shenandoah.

I think 2921 Riverby Rd, Ste 100 is leased to Broham. Broham / Broham Fine Soul Food & Groceries is chef Johny Rhodes' forthcoming boutique grocery store.

Broham / Broham Grocers is indeed located at 2921 Riverby Rd, Suite 100.  Although the news of the boutique grocery's move to East River has long been reported, the store's address was never disclosed.

In a recent update to East River's website (updated sometime in mid-September or early October), there is also a refreshed directory of retailers and companies. The directory includes pages to each businesses announced so far. It also includes their addresses.

La Calle may be leasing or in lease negotiations to expand its footprint to East River. It's also possible it could be an entirely new dining concept from the La Calle team.  A recent entity filing connected to La Calle seems to indicate a restaurant in the East River development may be a possibility.

If true, the East River outpost will be La Calle's fourth location. The locally-owned Mexican eatery opened its first location downtown. Additional locations are in Midtown (currently closed for renovations) and Garden Oaks.
