Obama record: 75,000 in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. - Some 75,000 people have turned out to see Barack Obama speak along the Portland waterfront, a record for the campaign.

The crowd covers the lawn here at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, from the streetside entry gates down to the Willamette River. Portland fire officials estimate 60,000 people are packed inside the park proper and another 10-15,000 are watching outside the gates. Spectators are lining the bridge behind Obama and watching, bikini-clad, from boats on the river.

The stump speech is Obama's standard riff - 30 minutes long and counting now, despite the sun beating down on the candidate. He's added a few Oregonian flourishes, drawing big cheers when he said the country can learn from Portland's commitment to mass transit and bicycle lanes. The biggest applause came when he denounced the Iraq war; Oregon is a hotbed of anti-war activism.

Different than seeing just one man speak.

No kidding. When Stephen Hawking came through town, I think back in 2003, on his way to A&M, he gave a speech which went on for a couple hours on all kinds of interesting cosmological phenomenon. He was way more informative and genuine than any politician, and on top of that came across as quite personable in spite of the technology barrier.

There was advertising throughout the Houston media market, but he only drew a crowd of perhaps 400.

In my mind, that's about all that any politician deserves at a single stump speech. Too many more than that, and there's no way in hell I'll ever vote for them. Some people praise the wisdom of groups, but my kneejerk reaction is to oppose those that are so popular, no matter what they stand for. This kind of phenomenon is dangerous.

Participation in democracy is "pretty creepy" and "Dangerous?"

Wow. Just wow.

It's a matter of scale. I don't mind a few hundred politically-energized loons getting together to listen to an empty rhetoric-filled stump speech...which btw, I don't consider to be a form of political participation, on account of that its a tightly controlled and totally rehearsed spectator sport...but when 75k persons engage in an act of mass lunacy, that gives reason for pause.

Just to clarify: Voter Turnout = Participation in Democracy = Good; Stump Speech Turnout = Pretty Creepy = Dangerous.

Obama supporters want Socialism.

And the "Change" he speaks of is the change in our pockets.

Man aint that the truth...

Taxes under Clinton Taxes under Bush 2008

Single making 30K - tax $8,400 Single making 30K - tax $4,500

Single making 50K - tax $14,000 Single making 50K - tax $12,500

Sing le making 75K - tax $23,250 Single making 75K - tax $18,750

Married making 60K - tax $16,800 Married making 60K- tax $9,000

Married making 75K - tax $21,000 Married making 75K - tax $18,750

Married making 125K - tax $38,750 Married making 125K - tax $31,250

Both democratic candidates will return to the higher tax rates

It is amazing how many people that fall into the categories above

think Bush is screwing them and Bill Clinton was the greatest

President ever. If Obama or Hillary are elected, they both say they

will repeal the Bush tax cuts and a good portion of the people that

fall into the categories above can't wait for it to happen. This is

like the movie, The Sting with Paul Newman; you scam somebody out of

some money and they don't even know what happened.

You are so wrong. Obama and Clinton are still fighting for the nomination, so shows of support like this actually matter, to gain superdelegate votes, just like a vote matters. There is nothing creepy or dangerous about it, and it's totally out-there to call Obama supporters "loons" or their presence there "mass lunacy." That kind of rhetoric is what's crazy.

Ah, if only it were that simple.

I am certainly not better off now than I was in the 1990s. The cost of food, housing, education, transportation, utilities, healthcare, insurance, etc... have all but wiped out any tax savings.

Additionally, I am wary that the government is SPENDING more now than at any time in our HISTORY. How are we paying for that with the above tax cuts? What will the consequences be due to the out of control borrowing in the future?

It's time for people to start THINKING.

It doesn't bother me, per se, that the government is spending more than at any time in our history. Our economy is larger than at any time in our history (in terms of GDP). Government spending should rise commensurate with economic growth.

But Kinkaid is on to something. The government can finance its projects in several ways. It can tax-and-spend, it can borrow-and-spend, it can print-money-and-spend, or it can make-you-pay-for-it-directly. In any case, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Whether the dollars comes out of your pocket or the dollar stays in your pocket but is worth less, you pay for the projects that your elected officials decide to take on. That is the crux of the issue.

If you think things are bad now, just wait:

http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5h-wpxs...2Zk5xnYygW1W67w

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama said.

"That's not leadership. That's not going to happen," he added.

I'm encouraged by that.

I hope he can have the nuts to undo some things (executive signing statements, etc ) because I think he is electable. Don't squander my vote, Barack.

It's really not going to matter who gets elected, unless Congress gets their heads out of their arses. They are so tied up with Bi-partisan squabbling they can get nothing done. And to be honest I don't see any one leader uniting the tribes. It is just a real mess all the way around. Now Teddy may be taking a dive for the sympathy vote, who knows what's going to become of that end of the spectrum if he's down for any length of time. It just gives the appearance that the Democratic Party is committing political suicide dragging this thing out like they are. And if the Clinton's pull off a steal with some fast and fancy maneuvering, there will be a lot of voters jump parties as a result, since McCain more along the middle anyway.

Old man McCain could never pull off such an event.

Bill Clinton couldn't pull off such an event !!! The brainwashed Barry Hussein minions have a very big letdown coming their way. Especially if Hillary believes her own press and decides to go Commando on the Dem. Party.

I hope to see how the brainwashed left and obama will lead this country. Its fun to speculate how bad it will be, but I really want to see if it can top the damage the brainwashed right with bush has ALREADY done to the country.

It would be tough to top Bush, but that won't stop the punditocracy from blaming Obama for all of it....even the problems that Bush caused. The apoplexy of the talk radio hosts might be fun to listen to for awhile.

The recent spate of GOP losses (even in Mississippi!) suggests that there may be a Dem sweep in November. As excited as this may make hardcore Dems, it could be the worst thing to happen, as they will have no one to blame their failures on, just like the Republicans from 2000 to 2006.

Was just waiting for some crap like this to be said. He TJones, do you think Obama is a Muslim?

Who is up for FOUR more years of Bush if McCain is elected?

Muslim? I doubt it.

But an opportunistic name changer in order to make the liberal left bow down before the one they serve?

Absolutley.

You have to admit it's a fair question if you are Muslim or not when you have a crazy arse name like Barrack Hussein Obama.

Hillary is going to stop wearing underwear?

Yes, everyone with a crazy arse name might be a Muslim. No reasonable person can disagree with that.

I named my crazy arse "Bubbles". I am not a Muslim, but feel free to keep asking me that question for the next year.

So you argree he changed his name to reap white liberal guilt?

I wasn't aware that he ever changed his name. I read that he asked people to stop using his nickname and start using his real name while he was in college.

And how would that reap white liberal guilt?
