  2. Warn them that if they do not listen Spring ISD will quickly become the next North Forest, and surely it will never recover from that....
  3. The two North Forest schools consolidate into North Forest High School, located at the Forest Brook campus. The mascot: Bulldogs (pretty generic) See http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/5791120.html
  4. Yeah, the discussion boards need to be moderated. They need to IP Ban people who do not behave.
  5. Why can't the Montrose people form a conspiracy against this place? I know it already has lots of complaints. Perhaps people could start sending undercover cops to the place?
  6. It would likely still be like that, especially considering that Saudis need a place where they can be playboys
  7. The solution is for HISD to publicize Barbara Jordan and to turn Jones into a vocational school and military academy.
  8. The kids could also ride bicycles, drive their own automobiles, or have parents drive them. The thing about HISD is in much of it METRO operates, allowing for students to ride city buses to school. I think Spring Branch ISD has one mile as its limit. EDIT: SBISD says it provides free "transportation" to all students PreK-12 - I do not know exactly what that means, though: http://www.springbranchisd.com/districtinf...nsportation.htm I am now out of high school, but most of the kids who went to my high school did not live within two miles of the school. I think some kids who lived nearby had private bus services.
  9. In terms of safety and children I think things are just more publicized - not necessarily less safe. In any event, an older subling can walk with younger kids and/or kids can walk in groups and predators are less likely to disturb groups than lone individuals. I think the real problem may be a lack of sidewalks in some areas (I do not know how sidewalks are represented in CFISD) And it is reasonable to establish such a policy. Houston ISD has the two mile limit, although it also allows kids who could not easily walk to school due to obstructions and special education kids to take buses. Now, another idea could be to make parents of elementary school children who want to take their kids on buses who live between 1 and 2 miles from school to *pay* for bus service. Middle and high school students under 2 miles and elementary school students under 1 mile (with no special conditions or obstructions) are simply not eligible to take a bus.
  10. I agree that we need to establish more vocational schools. Houston ISD already has Barbara Jordan High School for Careers, and so perhaps it needs to establish more of those vocational schools - perhaps Jones High School could be converted into a partial vocational school and a partial military academy (in the vein of military public high schools in Chicago and Philadelphia). Also if HISD takes over NFISD, which has been reduced to a single HS, it would have a larger pool of people who would likely be interested in going to Barbara Jordan (as BJ is VERY close to NFISD).
  11. 1. I totally agree with the bus statement. Kids need to walk. CFISD should set two miles as its distance. 2. I would like to see the portion of CFISD within the City of Houston given to Houston ISD - Two elementary schools and one middle school are in that section. The kids can be zoned to Scarborough HS in Oak Forest. I do not have any opinions about what happens to the rest of CFISD except that all of Jersey Village should be in one district and zoned to one elementary, one middle, and one high school.
  12. 9547 Meadowbriar is in Houston ISD. It is zoned to: * Emerson ES * Revere MS * Lee HS (with Lamar HS and Westside HS as options) Any house zoned to Emerson ES is eligible for application to the Briarmeadow Charter School (K-8) 610 Grecian is in Spring Branch ISD. It is zoned to: * Memorial Drive ES * Spring Branch MS * Memorial HS
  13. I think the TAKS tests ask questions about difference between fact and opinion - I could check it and see if TAKS asks such questions and at what grade levels.
  14. That's hyperbole. If the district was truly incompetent in every manner it would be a larger version of North Forest. Rather, HISD has some advantages and some disadvantages, but how well you do depends on what neighborhood the parent lives in, how savvy he or she is in choosing schools, and the student's willingness to learn. Check out schools in wealthier neighborhoods and they tend to have high test scores. Schools in poor areas tend to have lower scores.
  15. Don't forget about Robin Hood... - I'm not sure exactly how much Robin Hood contributes to things. I know that HISD has *some* new campuses.
  16. Actually, Coog, some people believe high school should not be for everyone. This essay posted on Richard Geib's website proposes an alternative: http://www.rjgeib.com/biography/inner-city...igh-school.html - Read this essay by Carol Jago, which proposes a work study program for people not interested in academics. But how much of this is in our control? We get many immigrants who dropped out of high school in their native countries or only have the equivalent of a high school education. Also how is the metropolitan area being defined?
  17. Is there a way to place soapy water dishes so that the if ants tried to get into the hanging plant, they would have to fall into soapy water and drown?
  18. TJones: That list stated the People's Republic of China was one of the donors for Hurricane Katrina efforts. Also... the PRC's main goal is to remain a stable country. The wealth gap is increasing between rural poor and urban rich and this is causing friction among the peasantry. Also the PRC is not intending to bother the US; it is focusing on domestic issues. Oh, sure, there were lead poisonings in cat food and other products, but that wasn't a deliberate attempt to harm the U.S. Rather it was corruption and/or incompetence.
  19. Have you checked your specific zoned schools? It'll help to see how your specific zoned schools do. The wealthiest neighborhoods tend to have the highest performing and safest public schools. Also HISD operates magnets, which help when people do not like their zoned schools. Anyhow, use this tool: http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/abcx_tool/search.asp And then use www.greatschools.net and www.schooldigger.com to check out the schools.
  20. This house is zoned to the following Houston ISD schools: * Reagan HS * Hogg MS * Browning ES
  21. I'm kinda jealous of how DeAndre Way (Soulja Boy) became famous so early in life...
  22. The zoned schools (Houston ISD) are: * Cage ES * Jackson MS * Austin HS
  23. Okay, HISD spent 3 million dollars to revamp Key... But some parents still want HISD to bulldoze the old Key and build a new school... While Saavedra floated the idea of closing Key and using it as HISD offices: http://www.chron.com/disp/commnts.mpl/front/5767177.html I think all the Chron posters seeing the 3 million as HISD "waste" don't understand that in fact there are various political forces. What it boils down to is that the Kashmere Gardens/Houston Gardens area wants a "bigger slice of the pie" and I feel the Kashmere Gardens/Houston Gardens communities used distortion to try to gain from the district.
  24. The Mykawa School is now used as the Minnetex Civic Center. My question: Where is it? I have searched the internet and cannot find an address for the place. Does anyone know where it is?
  25. Also don't forget to check the houses in this, http://fmp.springbranchisd.com/address/address.htm - You can tell which houses are zoned to which schools.
