  1. Yeah, the Randall's near me did not close. A whole bunch of grocery stores are near where I live. This includes: * 2 Randall's * 2 Krogers * 1 Rice * 1 Whole Foods * 1 Fiesta * 1 Davis Food City * 1 Seller Brothers
  2. HISD is the largest district in Texas, so the school quality in HISD varies heavily. A label applying to the district as a whole oftentimes is not accurate, as there are all kinds of schools (from the good to the bad to the ugly). As a matter of fact, I want Spring Branch to join Houston ISD. That way Spring Branch kids can go to Houston magnet schools and kids in poorer HISD neighborhoods with bad schools can transfer to Spring Branch.
  3. Yes, it is, according to the Houston ISD link.
  4. A new Houston ISD alternative high school called "International High School" is scheduled to open in the HCCS Central Campus in Midtown. See: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...3229316,00.html International High School, which will have no more than 400 students from grades 9 through 12, is scheduled to open in 2006. Students may begin taking HCC classes when they are juniors.
  5. Maybe I should post that story that I and a friend of mine are writing about some kids from Memorial and Briar Forest going to Sharpstown Mall and encountering thugs and scammers. Oh, and it's a comedy.
  6. They have open enrollment in Houston ISD, and many kids from poorer neighborhoods go to schools in richer neighborhoods that have better reputations. E.G. a kid living in the Third Ward who does not want to go to Yates High can take the METRO to Lamar High (in the Upper Kirby district) instead. Lamar High is huge (3,000) and mainly white collar, while Yates is having enrollment issues and has a mainly blue collar population.
  7. Don't they have open enrollment at Katy ISD? (Open enrollment is where a kid can go to any school that he or she is not zoned to as long as he or she does not have to rely on school bus transportation).
  8. There are at least six: "1 320 S WAYSIDE DR, HOUSTON, TX 77011, USA 713-923-4772 6.70 M/11.17 KM 2 5406 BELLAIRE BLVD, BELLAIRE, TX 77401, USA 713-663-6605 11.79 M/19.66 KM 3 631 SOUTHMORE AVE, PASADENA, TX 77502, USA 713-920-0230 17.67 M/29.45 KM 4 814 FM 1960 RD W, HOUSTON, TX 77090, USA 281-444-7858 29.45 M/49.09 KM 5 7501 HIGHWAY 6 N, HOUSTON, TX 77095, USA 281-463-0966 29.97 M/49.96 KM 6 814 FM 1960 RD W, HOUSTON, TX 77090, USA 281-444-7858 15.64 M/26.06 KM " And yes, this is from DD's website. You need to play around with the search radius so it gets as much of the area as it can.
  9. The Home Depot at Westbury Square is brand new, so I don't think there is much you can do about that. Also, there is a Home Depot in the Pin Oak area (near the city of Bellaire) and that did not hurt the surrounding community. As for the Square itself, I think it should be revitalized - Would a new Target help the Square?
  10. River Oaks is a very expensive neighborhood. It is the Beverly Hills of Texas. The houses are large and many celebrities and oil businessmen live in River Oaks or have houses there. Next to River Oaks are very trendy eateries and grocery stores (a Kroger Signature and a Whole Foods). The public (River Oaks Elem, Lanier Middle in Montrose, Lamar High in Upper Kirby) and private schools (Annunication Orthodox, St. John's in Upper Kirby, River Oaks Baptist, etc) in and around River Oaks are well-renowned. Too bad you can't afford it What is your budget? (What price house are you looking for?) - There are less-expensive neighborhoods nearby that are 300K, and going a bit further out or going to the East End will reveal even less-expensive houses.
  11. Now, unclean toilets is something that doesn't sound so far off to me, but crap in the elevator? That sounds like something that happened at the Superdome.
  12. "The amazing thing is that the houses in the neighborhood directly south of the center (Willow Meadows), although old (mid-century), have held up their value very well and continue to gain in value. I can't figure out why that center has gone down and why that one piece of it has remained empty for so long." It's because the people who go to Meyer Park come from other neigbborhoods. Maybe we should rebuild the AMC with stadium seating.
  13. "I found out they aren't closed but must be leasing half their store to another company. Because I saw people walk in and out of there...but yet there is a big "FOR LEASE" sign on the side of the building. Weird!" It looks like there finally will be some use for the old Planet Music site.. Now I'm awaiting for someone to take the old Media Play spot at Meyer Park.
  14. "No, but I said "Montgomery County" since The Woodlands isn't incorporated. * Incorporated? Does that mean it isn't part of The Houston Metropolitan Area?" No.. it means that... There is no mayor of "The Woodlands" The police are Montgomery County Police and pretty much the municipality IS the county, minus the private services provided for by the planned community.
  15. No, but I said "Montgomery County" since The Woodlands isn't incorporated.
  16. What city should get the new theme park? Maybe we should make a poll on this. Possible choices include: * Galveston * Houston city limits (anywhere within the Houston city limits) * League City * Pearland * Sugar Land/Missouri City * Katy * Northern Harris County (not including Houston city limits) * Montgomery County
  17. "Can someone tell me what happened to the Borders at Meyerland? I thought it was doing SO WELL!!! " Isn't it still there? The Planet Music closed...
  18. Oh.. in that case, Gregory has been closed.. When did Gregory close?
  19. Yeah - Gregory-Lincoln looks terrible... What about the civil war graveyard controversy?
  20. The Horn in Alief is named after Gladys Horn, while the Horn in Bellaire is named after Paul W. Horn..
  21. Hines-Caldwell is along West Orem outside of the 610 loop. Moreno is near Northline Mall. Moreno: 620 East Canino Houston, TX 77037-4619 Hines-Caldwell: 5515 West Orem Houston, TX 77085-1253 "So, would it be too simplistic to say that, wherever HISD expands is a low-income area and will be for years to come?" Yes, because HISD is also expanding in the Briar Forest area with Daily Elementary School, and in Uptown with St. George Place Elementary. "Like the credo "retail follows rooftops" we could also say "blackboards follow babies". So where are young families booming in HISD territory? Seems like most young families that can afford to move to the suburbs once the kids get to be school age, except in River Oaks etc. Which leaves only the ones who can't afford anywhere else." Moreno was built to serve the increasing Hispanic immigrant population near Northline Mall, and Caldwell was built to serve a population that is also zoned to Madison High School (I am not sure what percentage low income they are). Many of them are booming in those locations as well as Gulfton, Briar Forest, the East End that is outside the 610 Loop near Hobby Airport, the area in and around West University Place, and Uptown.
  22. Jean Hines Caldwell and Moreno Elementary Schools will open next school year. According to the Chronicle, Caldwell has terrazzo floors and naturally-lit hallways (with ceiling-high windows). Caldwell also has science rooms with computers and art rooms with kilns. Two early childhood centers, Farias and Mistral, will also open this year. This is part of a plan to offer free preschool to low income Houstonians within HISD's boundaries. HISD's site: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...1165324,00.html
  23. "If we had stayed there, I wonder if I would have attended one of those schools (Ortiz and/or Chavez). Like I said, we moved away back in 1964." Ch
  24. Actually, Spring High School's 2002-2003 population count was 2890, and Westfield's (across two campuses) was 3935. Also, Alief Elsik and Hastings lost population when Alief Taylor opened.
  25. Park Place now has over 1,000 people. I wonder if a new elementary school will be built in the area. Park Place feeds into brand new schools (Ortiz Middle and Ch
