  1. My family has a middle-class experience in a neighborhood near West U. My sister was "middle class" and did fine at Lanier Middle School and Lamar High School. If you want a "middle class" experience, you may want to try Oak Forest or Garden Oaks and then shoot for Lanier and Lamar. By the way, I want Spring Branch ISD to merge with Houston ISD so Memorial High School is open to all Houston residents. MHS can establish a magnet program and get kids in Houston.
  2. Actually the villages south of I-10 are also zoned to Spring Branch Middle School. In fact, Spring Branch Middle School is in Hedwig Village - South of I-10. How long ago did you go to Lanier? My sister went to Lanier from 1998 to 2001. Lanier was a mix of kids when she was there. There are a lot of wealthy kids at Lanier since Lanier is the neighborhood school of River Oaks.
  3. Yes, transfers are permitted. Check Lamar's website at http://hs.houstonisd.org/lamarhs/magnet.htm for information about its magnet program and transfer information. Houston ISD's transfer and magnet programs, which take students from all over Houston ISD, have allowed it to keep in many top performing and affluent students. See: http://www.houstonisd.org/Departments/site...8991668,00.html for information about Houston ISD's magnet programs in general. Also see http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...3443097,00.html for transfer information. There are other types of transfers available. I do not know which ones Lamar High School accepts besides magnet transfers. My sister attended Lamar High School and graduated with the IB Diploma. I wanted a smaller high school. I am currently an 11th grader at that HISD school. Personally I think all of Downtown should be rezoned to Lamar High School. If you know enough people who wish to do this, you may create a campaign for rezoning and pressure the HISD Board into changing its zoning boundaries.
  4. Lanier Middle and Lamar High are rated highly and are located about 9 miles from your Garden Oaks house. While they have magnet programs that take up chunks of the campuses, they are "traditional" American schools at heart. However if Spring Branch is closer to where you work and you can afford it, I would say "Go" for it. Spring Valley is zoned to: * Valley Oaks Elementary School in Houston - http://voe.springbranchisd.com/ * Spring Branch Middle School in Hedwig Village - http://www.springbranchisd.com/schools/allcampus/mid/sbm.htm * Memorial High School in Hedwig Village - http://www.springbranchisd.com/schools/all...us/high/mhs.htm Spring Branch ISD also has a school zone feature at http://fmp.springbranchisd.com/address/address.htm Also, Houston ISD and Spring Branch ISD provide school buses to all kids who live more than 2 miles from their schools (this also applied to magnet programs) or have major obstacles. In other words, if your child(ren) are in an HISD magnet school and it's more than 2 miles from the the house, the kids get school bus transportation.
  5. Speaking about the condos themselves, it looks like they will be zoned to the brand new HISD school (St. George Place) going up along Hidalgo street. The address is also zoned to Lanier MS and Lamar HS. I wonder if this means the condos will be more expensive and/or sell faster?
  6. Where are you zoned? Some of the zoned schools on HISD's west side are good too. Type in your address at: http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/abcx_tool/search.asp This should determine where you are zoned. As for the Memorial area schools - They are in the Spring Branch ISD: http://www.springbranchisd.com/
  7. By the way, if you plan on having kids, these are the schools that the apartments are zoned to: * Crockett Elementary School ( http://es.houstonisd.org/crockettes ) * E.O. Smith Education Center (for Middle School) ( http://ms.houstonisd.org/SmithMS ) * Davis High School ( http://hs.houstonisd.org/Davishs ) Profiles: * Crockett: http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Crockett_ES.pdf * Smith: http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Smith_EO_1thru8.pdf * Davis: http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Davis_HS.pdf Also, keep in mind that students who attended Brock ES (http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Brock_ES.pdf) now go to Crockett ES; Brock ES was closed in 2004 and students were rezoned to Crockett. I don't think they are thought of as the best schools in Houston ISD. If you do have kids, you may wish to apply to other elementary, middle, and/or high schools if you are not satisfied with Crockett, Smith, and/or Davis.
  8. Actually, Twain Elementary School is located in Braeswood. Poe is in Boulevard Oaks. Twain has been rebuilt and is now being landscaped. Pershing will be rebuilt too. The other zoning choice, Pin Oak Middle School, was built in 2002. Braes Heights is zoned to Twain Elementary School, Pershing Middle School (with Pin Oak Middle School as an option), and Lamar High School. Again - zoned schools: * Twain Elementary School ( http://es.houstonisd.org/marktwaines/ or http://www.marktwainpto.org/) * Pershing Middle School ( http://www.pershingms.org) or Pin Oak Middle School ( http://www.pinoak.us) * Lamar High School ( http://hs.houstonisd.org/lamarhs/) Profiles: * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Twain_ES.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Pershing_MS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/PinOak_MS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lamar_HS.pdf
  9. I think IAH needs the following destinations: * Rome * Madrid * Delhi * Mumbai * Dubai * Cairo * Beijing * Shanghai * Johannesburg * Dakar or Lagos * Santiago, Chile * Sydney I am glad that Continental is expanding out of IAH. Its nice seeing the airport grow with the city.
  10. See if there are vacant lots east of 288 close to SCR. A high school for SCR would serve some kids east of 288 too!
  11. That type of Target should be in Downtown. A mix of Target, Best Buy, and other stores should be in Downtown.
  12. I think Pearland and Alvin ISD should merge. The two districts combined cover almost all of the City of Pearland, as well as Manvel, Alvin, and Iowa Colony. All areas west of 288 in north Brazoria are Alvin ISD while some areas east of 288 are Pearland ISD. The two should combine so Pearland can get a second high school close to Shadow Creek Ranch. Perhaps a new 7-8 school and a new 5-6 school can be established in that area too.
  13. Yes, the city needs to fill in those large parking lot spaces. They need large parking garages and mixed-use complexes. Also, if there are some empty lots in eastern Downtown, they would be prime space for a new community center, a new K-8 magnet/neighborhood school, and perhaps even a magnet high school.
  14. This won't be a two-story Target, right? It would be cool if they built a two-story Target in that area.
  15. I have figured out how HISD is going to manage the closings and openings. Students living in the SGP zoning area for 06-07 will enroll in the School at Post Oak while Briargrove students use the SGP building. Once Briargrove's new building has been completed, Briargrove will move out and the Post Oak school will move into SGP.
  16. 1. St. George is being built to relieve Uptown-area schools, including Pilgrim and Briargrove. St. George is also there to promote a neighborhood in Uptown. "I had heard that many Briargrove Elementary students will be relocated to the new St. George's building while their school will be renovated next year. Is this true?" According to HISD's website it is. 2. Pilgrim is being relocated because it is (apparently) too full. A small part of Briargrove is being relocated to Pilgrim while parts of Pilgrim, the School @ Post Oak, and parts of Will Rogers will be relocated to St. George Place. A brand new campus for Pilgrim will open at 6300 Skyline. In other words, Pilgrim is not closing down. *The portions of the 05-06 Briargrove zoning area which are south of Westheimer will be rezoned to Pilgrim *The portions of the 05-06 Pilgrim zoning area which are east of Fountainview will be rezoned to St. George Place 3. Students that live east of the railroad tracks will go to Poe Elementary. There's a separate topic on the closing of Will Rogers. Also see: * Current Briargrove boundary map: http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/schoolbounda...riargrovees.pdf * Current Pilgrim boundary map: http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/schoolbounda...s/pilgrames.pdf A few other links: * Rebuild HISD Briargrove page: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISDPortal/depar...4872248,00.html * Rebuild HISD Pilgrim page: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISDPortal/depar...1236549,00.html * Rebuild HISD St. George Place page: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISDPortal/depar...4872242,00.html
  17. Why the heck is HISD closing Will Rogers Elementary in the Greenway area (It has plenty of students)? Those of you who read HAIF know that it's because HISD sold the land. Now the people zoned to Will Rogers either are zoned to: * Memorial Elementary (the area only consists of Memorial Park, so nobody is sent to Memorial Elementary) * Poe Elementary (Subdivisons east of Weslayan, including The Greenway Condominiums and much of Upper Kirby) * St. George Place Elementary (subdivisions west of Weslayan and south of the bayou, including Afton Oaks) A map is here: http://www.houstonisd.org/vgn/images/porta...0414A-2maps.pdf
  18. http://www.houstonisd.org/vgn/images/porta...vedboundary.pdf The zoning boundary of St. George Place Elementary was revealed. The school will include St. George Place, Afton Oaks, and several other neighborhoods. Pilgrim Elementary is being relocated to a new location. By the way, it looks like Pilgrim will be the school that serves a bunch of apartment complexes while the homes are zoned to SGP. See: * http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/suprnbhd...use/sn20lu.html * http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/suprnbhd...use/sn21lu.html * http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/suprnbhd...use/sn23lu.html And compare the maps.
  19. It was along Kirby. A Kroger (7747 Kirby) is where it used to be.
  20. Don't be so pessimistic. Just how many inner loopers like going to Wal-Mart? After all, compare the Wal-Mart Meyer Park store to the Meyerland Target.
  21. Then there's Astroworld... Don't forget Kiddie Wonderland.
  22. I think they would most likely relocate the Wilcrest store.
  23. By aircraft, you mean by number (e.g. all of their 777's used up), right? Fleetwise a B777 can make IAH-ICN (it can't do a IAH-HKG).
  24. I like Terminal E too, but I have never flown out of it. I have seen all of the other terminals; I agree with the statement that IAH is a visual hodgepodge. I wish for CO to start more Europe flights and flights to Osaka and Seoul from Houston.
