  1. I know where that is - it's in West U across Bellaire Boulevard. I remember when it was a Dicovery Zone. At least the movie spire is still here
  2. Well, I don't mean all of Harris County - I mean the Houston city limits. What I want is a unified magnet program that takes in all of the kids in the city limits and the "island cities" of Houston- E.G. I want children in Kingwood, Clear Lake, AND Alief to be in the same magnet programs that also have central Houston. I want magnet programs established at Kingwood and Clear Lake, and, at the same time, I want Kingwood and Clear Lake kids to be eligible for HSPVA and DeBakey.
  3. When did that stop? By the way, I want to rezone all of Houston into HISD. IMO I think that's a long shot, but I feel like the city needs a unified school district.
  4. It looks like a lot of these low rent complexes in the Galleria area are going the way of the dodo. This means that Briargrove ES, St. George Place ES, and Grady MS will not be so overcrowded. By the way, this is where the Alexan Lofts will be zoned to for school: * Briargrove Elementary School - http://www.bgroadrunners.org/ * Grady Middle School - http://ms.houstonisd.org/gradyms/ A choice of: * Lamar High School - http://hs.houstonisd.org/lamarhs/ * Lee High School - http://hs.houstonisd.org/leehs/ * Westside High School - http://hs.houstonisd.org/westsidehs/ Profiles: * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Briargrove_ES.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Grady_MS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lamar_HS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lee_HS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Westside_HS.pdf
  5. Schoolwise, I actually made a table of Downtown properties and what schools they were zoned to. Yes, I know that not a whole lot of people intend to raise families in Downtown Houston lofts, but this information may be useful to some people. Almost every loft property is zoned to E.O. Smith Education Center (for grades 6 through 8 only) and Davis High School. Some lofts are zoned to Gregory-Lincoln Smith Education Center (for grades K through 5 only), some to Bruce, and some to Crockett. I don't think any of these schools are considered to be the best HISD has to offer, so one could take a look at the Houston ISD magnet programs throughout the city. To see where a property in Downtown is zoned to, type its address in at http://dept.houstonisd.org/ab/abcx_tool/search.asp .
  6. Thank you! NFISD was in trouble for that long? Gee, it seems like WHISD's Houston cousin...
  7. Actually, I thought that a revival of Westbury Square would contain a mix of chain stores and local businesses. Then again, Target already has a location in Meyerland and the Westbury Square Home Depot is not in the style of Westbury Square.
  8. The ETJ is also a defined boundary. Many cities have their own ETJs.
  9. Yep. It is incorporated and is located in six different school districts.
  10. As for the public schools, all of them are in the Houston ISD and are held in high regard by the community: * River Oaks Elementary School: http://es.houstonisd.org/riveroakses/ * Lanier Middle School: http://ms.houstonisd.org/lanierms/ * Lamar High School: http://hs.houstonisd.org/lamarhs/ Keep in mind that Lanier and Lamar have school uniforms, so if you are opposed to the idea of uniforms, get a Texas Education Agency waiver so your child will not have to wear them. Anyway, here are profiles: * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/RiverOaks_ES.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lanier_MS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lamar_HS.pdf Houston ISD has magnet programs which allow your kid to be sent to other schools. As for nearby private schools: * St. John's School (K-12) * Kinkaid School (K-12) * St. Thomas High School (9-12) * Annunciation Orthodox (K-8) * St. Anne's Catholic (K-8)
  11. As for the school zoning: * Rusk Elementary School * E.O. Smith Education Center (grades 6-8 only) - http://ms.houstonisd.org/SmithMS/ * Phillis Wheatley High School - http://hs.houstonisd.org/wheatleyhs/ Profiles: * Rusk - http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Rusk_ES.pdf * Smith - http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Smith_EO_1thru8.pdf * Wheatley - http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Wheatley_HS.pdf Wheatley will have a brand new campus soon. See http://www.houstonisd.org/HISDPortal/depar...4872301,00.html If you aren't satisfied with these schools, Houston ISD has magnet and transfer programs. In addition there are several private schools in the area.
  12. It's more useful to get figures for the entire metro area - municipalities and structures differ between metro areas.
  13. The girl's name has been revealed! She is Ashley Paige Benton.
  14. I.H. Park is zoned to the following Houston ISD schools: * Burrus Elementary School - http://es.houstonisd.org/burruses/ * Williams Middle School - http://www.williamsmiddleschool.org/ * Washington High School - http://www.btwashington.org/ Profiles: * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Burrus_ES.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Williams_MS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Washington_HS.pdf
  15. Well, those are just a few of the people at Lamar. Any large American high school has a few bad guys. That's like calling Klein Collins bad for having those Nazi guys. Also, the police do not know if the guys are Lamar students. There are some Lamar kids who suspect certain people as those involved. My sister never made any complaints about safety at Lamar HS. Lamar HS is trimming the student population, and that means kicking out transfer (non-zoned) students. Guess who is going to be kicked out first?
  16. Houston ISD is tearing down the old school and building a new one. For now, Briargrove kids will be taught at the St. George Place Elementary campus off of Hildago Street.
  17. http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...1588495,00.html A new small magnet high school will be established in Houston Community College Southeast. It sounds a lot like Challenge Early College, which is at HCC West Loop
  18. This may come in handy in case you have school age children... Right now the complex is zoned to the following Houston ISD schools: * Pilgrim Elementary School (http://es.houstonisd.org/pilgrimes/) * Grady Middle School (http://ms.houstonisd.org/gradyms/) and a choice of: * Lamar High School (http://hs.houstonisd.org/lamarhs/) * Lee High School (http://hs.houstonisd.org/leehs/) * Westside High School (http://hs.houstonisd.org/westsidehs/) HOWEVER, starting in fall 2006, the condo will be rezoned to the brand new St. George Place Elementary School off of Hidalgo street. The school was formed from the School at Post Oak (http://es.houstonisd.org/postoakes/), a TEA "Recognized" school and is better than Pilgrim. Profiles: * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Pilgram_ES.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Grady_MS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lamar_HS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lee_HS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Westside_HS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/SchoolatPostOak_ES.pdf High-school wise, Lamar is the closest to the condo and it has a much better academic program than Lee. Keep in mind that HISD also has many magnet and transfer programs available.
  19. The Spring Independent School District (ISD) covers areas in unincorporated Harris County and a VERY small portion of Houston. Spring ISD serves many communities, including Spring, Olde Oaks, Ponderosa Forest, and Bammel. Spring ISD has two high schools, Spring and Westfield. Westfield, which is divided into two campuses (one 9th and one 10-12), is overcrowded. The school's poor academic performance caused property values to drop, so Spring ISD built a new high school called DeKaney High School. DeKaney, named after former Spring ISD board member Andy DeKaney, will open in fall 2006. DeKaney will relieve Spring and Westfield High Schools. Spring ISD will also open two new elementary schools (Jenkins and McNabb) and one middle school (Bailey), all of which will feed into Spring High School. : EDIT: The previous phrase about the elementary schools is not correct, actually So, what else should the district do to improve?
  20. I would love to see this developed too! Has the project been confirmed yet? I can't tell from the posts already posted.
  21. By the way, just for informational reasons, I'm posting the schools that the complex is zoned to: * Briargrove Elementary School - http://es.houstonisd.org/briargrovees/ * Grady Middle School - http://ms.houstonisd.org/gradyms/ * A choice of Lamar High School (http://hs.houstonisd.org/lamarhs/), Lee High School (http://hs.houstonisd.org/leehs/), or Westside High School (http://hs.houstonisd.org/westsidehs/) - Most wealthy residents in the zone who have kids that remain in the public school system choose to enroll their kids in Lamar or Westside. Briargrove is gaining a brand new campus scheduled to open in the next school year. Also, are most of the Katrina evacuees out of the complex now? It's been more than six months..
  22. Aww, dude, I love telling them since some people don't know or understand those things By the way, it's also good since a kid in Bunker Hill could apply to and get into a school like HSPVA or DeBakey. So you would have kids go back and forth between Spring Branch and what is currently HISD.
  23. Actually, they would... after I point to the fact that Bellaire HS and Lamar HS (of West University Place and River Oaks) are open to most city residents... AND are still very successful schools. Also, in this scenario, Memorial HS gets to pick its out of zone students, rejecting kids with severe disciplinary problems. Also it gets to have tons of more athletes for sports competitions. Oh, sure, schools are technically not allowed to "recruit". But the big schools still do that.
  24. I checked 2727 Kirby in the school zone tool: It is zoned to: * Poe Elementary School - http://es.houstonisd.org/poees/ * Lanier Middle School - http://ms.houstonisd.org/lanierms/ * Lamar High School - http://hs.houstonisd.org/lamarhs/ Profiles: * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Poe_ES.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lanier_MS.pdf * http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/Lamar_HS.pdf This condo looks like a good choice for people who are deciding between several condos but want one zoned to good schools. I wonder if the Poe/Lanier/Lamar zoning is helping sell units. Also, a few more condos, including the Greenway Condos, will be rezoned to Poe next year after Will Rogers closes. See Will Rogers' profile at http://dept.houstonisd.org/profiles/WillRogers_ES.pdf
