  1. My idea for Houston is a combination of Houston and New York's systems. Students would still have zoned comprehensive schools, but they are also have to apply to at least 5 other schools. I want to bring in other parts of Houston into Houston ISD to allow for a large student pool for all of these programs. There would be tons of new high school programs established across the city. E.G. I think Kingwood (currently a part of Humble ISD) is a prime spot for a wildlife and fishery program. Out of district students (e.g. an Humble student wishing to attend Kingwood High) would be able to go to an HISD magnet program for free if there is space left over after all Houston students have applied and been accepted. HISD would encourage some magnet schools to build more space to accomodate new areas of the city that are brought into the district.
  2. I second that... Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown is okay.. but Houston-Pearland?
  3. I used the website store locator... or maybe I just misread the map.
  4. That's why I think any tunnel retailers who can do this should also open up at street level.
  5. Coog, what types of retailers do you think will help build Downtown (coffee shops? restaurants? booksellers? antique shops?)
  6. I'm not sure if there are any Wal-Marts in major city CBD's. New York City as a whole has zero Wal-Marts while K-Mart has locations in the CBD.
  7. As for more possibilities... Pollo Campero, a famous Guatemalan Chicken chain, has a South Wayside location 4.7 miles away. Is this too close? The closest Dunkin Donuts is 6.26 miles away in the East End. The closest Chili's is at 3215 Southwest Frwy. Is this too close? The only Houston Jillian's is at the Marq*E. Applebee's is a possibility in Downtown as the closest location to Downtown is outside the 610 Loop along Wallisville Road. The closest Ross is at Weslayan Plaza north and east of West University Place. Dairy Queen has no locations inside the 610 Loop. The closest location to Downtown is northwest of Downtown. The closest Baskin Robbins is across from Lamar High School in Upper Kirby. As chain restaurants are of a different nature, perhaps Baskin Robbins can go to Downtown. The closest Sbarros are in the Galleria and Memorial City Mall
  8. I am going to rummage through several chain store brands which do not have Downtown locations and see which ones are likely to get a Downtown location: Now Randall's is in Midtown, so it would make no sense to create a downtown Randall's. Fiesta won't work either as Fiesta has a Midtown location. There is a Kroger in the East End and a Kroger in the River Oaks/Montrose area, so I doubt a Downtown Kroger will work. The nearest HEB is in the OST area, and the next closest in areas like Bellaire and an area northwest of The Heights. But then there's Central Market in the River Oaks area. Hmm.. Unless Target already has a location under construction nearby, it would make perfect sense in Downtown Houston. The Target nearest Downtown Houston is the Galleria Target. Wal-Mart would not be welcome there (the closest Wal-Mart is northwest of Downtown outside of the Loop). The nearest Best Buy is also in the Galleria area, but I do not know if a Best Buy would make sense in the Downtown area. The nearest Circuit City is also in the Galleria area. Sears has a Midtown location, so I doubt that will work. Marshall's has a big Mega Marshall's in the River Oaks area, so that will not work. T.J. Maxx also has a River Oaks location. Barnes and Noble's closest location is the "Bookstop/Alabama Theatre" in the Montrose area. Borders also has a River Oaks location. Still, would one or the other work in Downtown? Maybe an additional location could be supported once more yuppies and students move in Downtown and Midtown. EDIT: Added quote
  9. Maybe we should write Jillians, Target, and Toys R' Us and ask for Downtown locations.
  10. Isn't there a new Target coming up in the Heights? I think Downtown should have a two-story Target with special escalators. The Target would be next to a parking garage.
  11. Downtown Houston needs more stores. What if we lured F.A.O. Schwarz back and got a Downtown location connected to the tunnel. Also, would a Downtown Jillian's work?
  12. Here is a big page about the Reagan renovation: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISDPortal/depar...5034404,00.html
  13. I would have both tunnel and street level retail. Perhaps the tunnel retail can also be at the ground, e.g. the Downtown CVS.
  14. A girl in my school who transferred out of Westbury has an idea on how to improve it: Establish a "real" magnet program - perhaps an automotive-technology related program. Westbury is known for its automotive programs. Also, Willow Meadows and the S.C. Red Elementary area should be rezoned to Bellaire since most kids in that area go to Bellaire anyway.
  15. I found another link related to it: http://www.houstonaplus.org/InternationalHighSchool.htm The Asia Society is going to be involved with International High.
  16. Unless Midtown gets a lot of high rises, I doubt it. The Medical Center and Downtown are separated by Hermann Park, the Museum District, and Midtown.
  17. Most of the really large movie theaters are around or outside the beltway. AMC could replace Meyer Park...
  18. She's planning to go into Premed.. most likely she will be in Biology. Of course, majors do change. Also she says the professors were extremely pissed at the vandalism of the statue.
  19. Does anyone have any memories from times in University/College? Any strange acts of vandalism or teenage stupidity? Any tips on how to stay in college? My sister is coming back from DePauw University (in Greencastle, Indiana) for Thanksgiving. She just graduated from Lamar High in Houston last May. She says that at DePauw a bunch of kids vandalized a deer statue donated by an alumn by making a failed attempt to saw off its legs. Then some kids rode the statue in the nude during Halloween.
  20. HISD has a Q & A on the project, but apparently it's only available to employees. http://www.houstonisd.org/HISD/portal/arti...6841553,00.html I wish the new HQ could be built in Downtown Houston, but alas...
  21. "Besdies, if the Bellaire kids/parents don't like it they can always buy their way into private schools of their choice. Have you seen what some of the teenage kids are driving out there? Lexus, hummer, BMW, etc....they are not strapped for cash." The problem is that HISD doesn't want to lose those students! The kids going to Westbury would most likely stay into the public system no matter what, but the kids zoned to Bellaire have money! Bellaire HS itself has a small zoning area, consisting of Bellaire, Meyerland, Ayshire, Braes Terrace, Knollwood, Linkwood, Woodshire, Woodside, Westridge, and a part of Westwood. What gives it more students is its AP and IB programs and its foriegn language magnet program. Also, Westbury's enrollment is falling fast. I heard that some kids went there because they had no uniforms. Now that Westbury High has uniforms, that segment is gone. Maybe we can wait until Westbury gets too small. Maybe it can become a middle school (which would replace Fondren MS) and then the high school students formerly zoned to Westbury would attend Sharpstown or Bellaire. In New York City, all high schools are admission-only. NYC has no high school zoning boundaries. I wonder how that would work out in Houston.
  22. The Meyerland area, as far as I know, has nowhere to go but "up", considering the McMansions that might go there soon. In addition Meyerland is zoned to Bellaire High. On the other hand, many living in Westbury shun the local high school, opting for Bellaire, magnet schools, or private schools.
  23. Don't the "other people" live in apartment complexes? And my mom and I love Seller Brothers!
  24. As for Will Rogers, its zoning area will be covered by: * St. George Place Elementary School (serving Afton Oaks, Larchmont, St. George Place) * Poe Elementary School * Memorial Elementary School
