  1. Not really - Much of the evacuee crime was evacuee on evacuee. It would have happened anyway. One of the problems with NO is that its prosecutors office sucked. When the NO criminals found that Houston has a real prosecutors office, many fled to NO.
  2. Alvin ISD may do the same thing. IMO I think Pearland ISD and Alvin ISD should consolidate into one school district and then have the school district boundaries re-drawn to control all of the Pearland city limits (including the pieces in Houston ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Pasadena ISD, and Clear Creek ISD)
  3. That is too funny! I think the building owners should be chuckling at that sign.
  4. Out of district people do not pay PISD taxes. The district is doing them a "favor" by taking them in. Anyway, IMO this is really attractive to people in the Willowridge HS zone of SCR. I'm not sure this will be as popular with people in the AISD part of SCR as AISD is building schools there. Maybe PISD could open magnet schools in its district. I wonder when PISD will be ready for a magnet high school...
  5. To be fair, during the second crash he was not driving. But, your advice is true.
  6. The confirmed death toll is at 32; two unidentified bodies were discovered along a shore in Galveston County and a Port Neches man was found dead in Orange County. 40 people reported missing have been found alive. The hotline collecting information about Ike statistics got 16 new cases of missing people; as of writing 365 people are still missing. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/hotstories/6029478.html - "Ike death toll increases as three bodies found" - September 29, 2008 - Diane Schiller
  7. The Houston Chronicle posted a WaMu Q&A from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...iz/6026107.html "A: JPMorgan said it will close about 400 branches of the combined company over an unspecified period. The branches to be closed will be those where there is "significant overlap" with a Chase branch. That number is less than 10 percent of the combined companies' branches."
  8. One thing that surprised me was that the city of Tomball has one elementary school serving all of the city limits (in the city limits of Tomball it also has two intermediate schools, one middle school, and one high school). Does TISD plan to build another elementary school in the city limits of Tomball?
  9. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/morenews/6027458.html "Two weeks after Ike, more than 400 are still missing" And a quote from the beginning: "Gail Ettenger made her last phone call at 10:10 p.m. She was trapped in her Bolivar Peninsula bungalow with her Great Dane, Reba. A drowning cat cried outside. Her Jeep bobbed in the seawater surging around her home. Ettenger, 58, told her friend she was reading old love letters by flashlight. "I think I really screwed up this time," she said, according to Monroe Burks, Ettenger's neighbor who had evacuated to Houston. That was Friday, Sept 12. On Wednesday — 12 days later — her nearly nude body was found face down by a huge debris pile in a remote mosquito-ridden marsh in Chambers County, about 10 miles inland from where her gray beach house once stood." and... "About 60 of the missing lived on the Bolivar Peninsula, stripped bare by the storm surge that felled beach houses like a bomb. More than 200 were listed as missing on Galveston Island itself, according to a city-by-city analysis of the data conducted for the Houston Chronicle by Bob Walcutt, executive director of the recovery center in Friendswood."
  10. Try the part of Klein ISD north of Cypress Creek. I think it will be stable for a long time.
  11. Remington Ranch is in Spring ISD. It is zoned to Cooper Elementary School, Bammel Middle School, and DeKaney High School. (See http://www.springisd.org/docs/zone_map.pdf ) That part of Spring ISD does not have a very good reputation.
  12. Also the schools that serve most of Highland Park and all of University Park are very homogeneous in makeup: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...357/school.aspx Meanwhile Lamar High School, which serves West U, has many different socioeconomic and racial groups: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...512/school.aspx Pershing Middle: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...553/school.aspx Pin Oak Middle: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...274/school.aspx West U Elementary: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...608/school.aspx
  13. TheNiche, so far there is a death list reported by the Houston Chronicle here: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/hurric...ke/6016764.html So far it hasn't talked about people in the Crystal Beach/Gilchrist area.
  14. I am glad Continental is doing this - This is how a hometown airline should treat its people. This attitude is totally different from price gouging gasoline stations that sometimes appear after disasters.
  15. And according to this: http://www.theexaminer.com/npps/story.cfm?ID=2618 " Although the Texas death toll for Ike stood at 22 on Thursday afternoon, there are fears it could go much higher. On his trip to Crystal Beach to tranquilize a tiger, Griffith got a troubling glimpse of what the recovery to come might reveal.
  16. You mean this: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/20...ricane-ike.html ""Neighborhoods that are affected by the storm surge
  17. Yeah, a lot of the building codes in unincorporated areas of Harris and Montgomery Counties were not as stringent as in the city of Houston and in areas closer to the coast. We need better building codes so even a Cat 2 cannot do much.
  18. I think we may see some more airlines pull out of Gatwick; because Heathrow is preferred by business, airlines that wanted more Heathrow slots are putting a/c at Heathrow.
  19. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ro/5994984.html HISD will vote to decide whether to merge the following campuses: * Allen and Kennedy * Blackshear and Jones The district already voted for MacArthur and Peck to be consolidated. EDIT: This vote is delayed until Friday September 19: http://www.houstonisd.org/HISDConnectDS/v/...00028147fa6RCRD
  20. "Show you" = Shoyu, the Japanese name for soy sauce.
  21. Not quite. Many of the DISD schools are older and had served more students in the past. As people moved to suburbs and as people were gentrified out, the populations of many DISD high schools (especially in the inner city) declined.
  22. This could make people more inclined to fly Southwest, which, as pointed below, still allows for two free bags. Right now Houston seems balanced between CO and WN - But if there is a loss of brand identity for CO (i.e. loss of "service"), then it makes people more inclined to fly WN.
  23. Exactly. Make a fuss. E-mail and send snail mail. Tell the airline point blank that it will LOSE good will AND money if it enacts this decision.
  24. Ricco67: 1. How did government screw up in Canada? 2. Please keep in mind that Canada's system is on a province by province basis; it would be like if Texas had a Texas Department of Health. Statements about Canada's health care statement are either true or false, depending on the province. See http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/canada.asp
  25. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5985207.html Continental announced that it will begin charging for the first checked bag in October. So, why don't we show the airline how silly this decision is by writing letters. If that fails and October comes, do not check any bags for any reason on the airline. I would prefer that the airline raises ticket costs as opposed to tacking a fee on the passengers.
