  1. Horn is at 10734 Bissonnet, Houston TX 77099 According to the zoning maps, Horn in the general zoning area is relieving Boone and Smith Elementary schools. In fact, Boone's attendance boundary is somewhat shifted to the left. This caused Alexander ES's boundary to shift left also, taking a piece of Hicks ES' boundary. As for the bilingual zoning, Horn relieved Chambers, Kennedy, and Landis. Horn was Elementary number 23 before it was given a name. EDIT: Horn students go on to Klentzman Intermediate (Grades 5 - 6) and Olle Middle (7 - 8).
  2. AFAIK students in Walnut Bend are also allowed to go to West Briar Middle School.
  3. My mom doesn't use the term but she doesn't like how some of the smaller homes are being torn down. However, the smaller homes are not as high up as the newer homes and therefore are vulnerable for flooding. Allison pretty much was the catalyst for the new home building in the neighborhood! There are some beautiful and unique new homes in the area. Perhaps I should take pictures?
  4. The eminent domain thing will effect people in the East Coast more than in Texas, won't it?. I still hate it, though.
  5. I know that in Bermuda and in Grand Cayman people give houses names, and in Bermuda there are no house numbers, only names. Why don't people name their houses? I think that naming a house is the first step to giving one's house an individual touch..
  6. I went to Kiddie Wonderland several times... I didn't really like the pony riding, though. It's now a Kroger..
  7. Another friend of mine lives in Briar Forest. She once lived in a townhome but she upgraded to a "McMansion" because the townhome was too small for a family of five (one sister had to stay in a closet behind her parents' room - It was an interesting house, but it was too small). I asked her where she would raise her kids if she lived in Houston; she says she would raise them in Briar Forest. Are Briar Forest's schools (Bush, Walnut Bend, Ashford, Askew, Shadowbriar, Revere, West Briar, and Westside) good?
  8. Yea... I wish that people would make their houses a bit more unique.. Perhaps people should name their houses (like what people do in Bermuda).
  9. Yea, Texas Monthly rated Austin and Milby as five star.. All in all, there are good schools in HISD. Also, Lamar has a much larger attendance boundary that it first seems (anyone who lives in the Lee HS attendance boundary may also choose Lamar or Westside). "i agree with danax...i am considering moving to a neighborhood that has all the original houses (1940's) and is mostly families with kids. the homes go for around 100,000 or so. i have told some people about this, and i got the immediate "oh my god you want to move THERE?" response. come to find out it is not based on the neighborhood itself, but rather the ethnic diversity. i couldn't believe it!" That reminds me of the neighborhood of the DPS place where I got my permit (it was near Welch Middle). Man, it was so diverse. There were Muslim women (probably from African countries), Hispanics, and Asians in there. What's that neighborhood called? I might like living there! EDIT: I found out that it's Fondren Southwest.
  10. "and also, the "middle class-ness" of bellaire, west university and the galleria is more of a higher financial category...new homes in Bellaire are surmounting one million dollars! (the cheapie new ones are about 600K). " Isn't 600K considered upper middle class? "i agree with danax...i am considering moving to a neighborhood that has all the original houses (1940's) and is mostly families with kids. the homes go for around 100,000 or so. i have told some people about this, and i got the immediate "oh my god you want to move THERE?" response. come to find out it is not based on the neighborhood itself, but rather the ethnic diversity. i couldn't believe it! " Which neighborhoods do you have in mind?
  11. HISD has a "no bus service" radius of two miles.. But the Clinton Park kids will be bused. EDIT: A link about Clinton Park's closing http://www.khou.com/news/local/stories/kho...y.3f4d8ba4.html
  12. "River Oaks Roberts Twain Elementary Schools Lanier and Pershing Middle Schools. Bellaire Lamar Waltrip High Schools' You forgot T.H. Rogers (which is a magnet school outside the loop), man! That place is so good! I expect Carnegie to join that list (although its outside 610). Also, what about Horn, Condit, Lovett (all in or serving Bellaire with the latter two outside the loop), and West U? Are they good? You also forgot DeBakey (rated Exemplary). And that list is all we need for an urban-yet Texan middle class Houstonian, eh? My area is not the only area with good grocery stores/schools/etc.. though those kinds of areas that appeal to middle class people with families tend to be nearby my area.. (also, the said middle school slated to be rebuilt also serves Bellaire AND West U).
  13. My friend lives in Bellaire when he isn't at boarding school. His house could be described as a McMansion.. it has Walt Disney and Looney Toones related pictures everywhere as a decoration. However, all his house has out back is a glassed in patio.. and not much of it! If I was building in that area, I would choose a Spanish-style house and I would have as large of a backyard as I can!
  14. Eh? There are kids who hang around in the middle of the street my neighborhood when I come home from school. And there are several good grocery stores in my area (2 Randall's, a Rice, a Kroger, and more). A brand new library popped up, as did a new YMCA which replaced an older one. And the schools; the elementary school is being rebuilt and the middle school will get the same. The elementary school and the two high schools that serve the neighborhood have IB status. So, yes, let's get started on HISD! "Vic, I disagree. Kids are raised on virtually every street of every neighborhood in Houston. There are certain stereotypes that apply to the neighborhoods that you mention...mostly, white upper middle class...but, that doesn't mean that if a neighborhood is not predominantly white and upper middle class, that it is harmful to children. " Whoops.. I forgot to add the middle class part.. DOH! However the guy who I responded to was mentioning areas like the Medical Center...
  15. I noticed that the Alief ISD elementary school boundaries were altered between 04-05 and 05-06. A new school, "Horn", appeared on the map. Is this a new Alief ISD elementary school?
  16. "If that were available inside the loop for anywhere close to what I pay now, I'd do it. But I'm not sacrificing my family's lifestyle just for my personal commuting convenience. " I'm not sure how the payment part works out, but I live inside the loop and I have a one story house with a yard and a pool! "I'll agree on the schools...our child (yet to be born) will probably attend private schools, unless HISD and Yates HS make a major turnaround. " I suggest Bellaire HS or Lamar HS if he would do well in honors classes. "Could not have said it better myself. I have friends in Timbergrove, Shady Acres and the Medical Center. These hoods are not for kids by any means. IMHO the kids are being neglected so Daddy can get downtown quicker. Sub-par schools, not many other kids in the area, and they are a wee bit high on the sketch factor. Is that really worth it? " Those aren't the neighborhoods where middle class kids are raised. Middle class kids are generally raised in Bellaire, West University, Braeswood, and Galleria area. EDIT: Forgot the middle class part!
  17. Katy has the following high schools: * Katy * Mayde Creek * Cinco Ranch * Morton Ranch * Seven Lakes * Katy Taylor * An alternative school So yes, Katy has seven high schools. If I remained in Houston, I would be choosy in determining which HISD schools I would want my kid to go to, as I know that HISD has some really good schools.
  18. I forgot one more thing.. Bowie (398, 117) is not closing. Bowie's kids would have attended school at a new school built near the current Berry (587, 159) Elementary School site. Since the neighborhood is improving, HISD decided to keep Bowie open. Instead Bowie will be rebuilt. As for Isaacs (403, 80), there is not enough space at the proposed reliever schools, which were Concord (210, 49) and Kashmere Gardens (499, 152). Also, Brock is slated to become an early childhood center according to an April press release. Also, it turns out that Easter and Chatham will close midway in 05-06.
  19. HISD is closing down several small elementary schools after the 04-05 school year. Argyle (292 students in 03-04 school year, 75 who were kindergarten and below in the 03-04 school year) was opened in a strip mall as a temporary reliever school. Since several brand new elementary schools opened in the area, Argyle was closed. The kids will go to Foerster (694, 152) next year. Brock (246, 77) was closed, and students who went to Brock will go to Crockett (388, 143). Clinton Park (which has a topic in the East End forum) (158, 56) closed. Kids are relocated to Pleasantville (390, 90). Douglass was closed (314, 95). Douglass students will go to Dodson (463, 117). Ryan (347, 92) was closed. Ryan students will go to Jefferson (681, 162) and Looscan (352, 91). In addition, other schools are slated to close. Chatham (220, 50) and Easter (208, 49) will close after the 05-06 year is over and students will go to Sanderson (365, 85). After the 05-06 year, Fairchild (401, 67) will close. Fairchild students will go to Alcott (589, 153), Bastian (591, 119), Grimes (380, 68), and Young (347, 106). Will Rogers (650, 116) is not closing due to population. Will Rogers will close after 05-06 because the tract of land it was on was the HISD Administration building, which was sold. Will Rogers students will be rezoned to Memorial (264, 73), Poe (730, 125), and the brand new St. George Place.
  20. Clinton Park Elementary School (which had 158 people in the 03-04 school year) closed after the 04-05 school year ended; all Clinton Park students will be rezoned to Pleasantville Elementary (which had 394 people in the 03-04 school year). What do you guys think about closing really small schools?
  21. "see what happens when a school district spends there money more wisely. Inner city school in Houston have no excuse. HISD needs to clean up its adminstration and wasteful spending. Schools need to drop all this special course and get back to the basics. Money can be spent on learning the three R's versus silly courses like diversity and tolerance training. I mean, ours kids won't read or do math, but they definitely know how not to offend someone because they had diverty and tolerance courses. " What wasteful spending are you talking about? "Money can be spent on learning the three R's versus silly courses like diversity and tolerance training. " Those courses don't exist at my school, and I doubt they exist at schools like Lamar and Bellaire... And yes, HISD is building brand new schools too. Four new HISD elementary schools will open this school year (while five closed after last year).
  22. Katy ISD built a new high school, Seven Lakes High School, to relieve nearby high schools. Any thoughts on the new building?
  23. However, nobody who lives in the fourth ward is zoned to PVA as PVA is not a "zone" school. Perhaps they can rechristen the lot of the San Jacinto Building at HCC as a brand new high school..
  24. I am aware that Missouri City is divided in two by the county line. How is the Harris County portion of Missouri City in comparison to the Fort Bend portion. I know that the Harris portion is served by Houston ISD instead of Fort Bend ISD: The following schools, all located in Houston, serve the Harris County portion of Missouri City * Bell Elementary (south and west of Beltway 8) and Gross Elementary (north and east of Beltway 8) * Welch Middle * Westbury High
