  1. There are many libraries in western Harris County. The City of Katy has the Katy Library (5414 Franz Road), operated by Harris County. In some unincorporated areas of west Harris the county operates: * Maud Marks: 1815 Westgreen Boulevard * Katherine Tyra at Bear Creek: 16719 Clay Road In addition, in Cinco Ranch Fort Bend County Libraries operates the Cinco Ranch Branch at 2620 Commercial Center Boulevard
  2. Spring ISD named new schools. The new middle school is "Dr. Edward Roberson Middle School, A Math, Science and Fine Arts Academy" (opening August 2009 in the former Westfield 9th Grade Center). The elementary schools are: * Ralph Eickenroht Elementary School - Opening August 2009 at 1525 Grand Point Drive. * R.J. Hoyland Elementary School - Opening August 2009 at 2200 Wittershaw Drive. * Gloria Marshall Elementary School - Opening in 2010 south of the Birnamwood subdivision * Helen Major Elementary School - Opening August 2009 at 16855 Sugar Pine Drive. http://www.springisd.org/default.aspx?name=feb09.5new
  3. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/6250005.html The archdiocese decided to shutter four Catholic Schools * Holy Name School, K-8 (Northside Village area) will flat-out close * Our Mother of Mercy, K-8 (Fifth Ward), will merge into St. Francis of Assisi, K-8 * St. Charles Borromeo, K-5 (Northline Mall area), will merge into Seton Catholic Junior High School, 6-8 * St. Philip Neri, K-5 (Sunnyside/South Park), will merge into St. Peter the Apostle Middle School, 6-8 The Charles Borromeo school is already being housed at Seton because of Ike damage to the Borromeo campus (which is not that far from Seton).
  4. Well, web.archive.org has archived stuff since 1996, so even if it's a few years old it may have been archived. Did you make any posts about this on HAIF? Did you post any links during that time?
  5. SBISD allows "out of district" transfers, so in that case one could. I don't know how easily one could get into Memorial HS. Yes, Memorial HS is "out of district" for HISD residents.
  6. Spring Branch is an area of Houston. However the six Memorial villages are separate from Houston. In Texas all school districts (except for one - Stafford MSD) are independent of the municipalities and counties. School districts may cross city and county boundaries; they answer only to the state.
  7. What was the URL? It may have been archived on web.archive.org - If so that is good as everyone can view it.
  8. Speaking of Yit Ing Ho there was a shooting outside of it in 1986 - http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html...751C1A960948260 - Apparently some Vietnamese men attacked a group of Vietnamese.
  9. All of the City of Bellaire, the City of West University Place, and the City of Southside Place are in HISD - They have zoning. Plus there are portions of Missouri City, Jacinto City, Hunters Creek Village, and Piney Point Village in HISD. Also there are inner city areas that are improving. Also parts of the City of Houston are in other school districts. These districts are: Aldine, Alief, North Forest, Spring Branch, Pasadena, Clear Creek, Cypress-Fairbanks, Katy, Fort Bend, Galena Park, etc. Then you have unincorporated areas of Harris County, which certainly do not have any sort of zoning whatsoever. Notice what happened to Spring ISD? It's schooldigger.com - But I don't see dropout rates on it.
  10. If you look at East Downtown District's website, it has plans to put Chinese characters on street signs - http://www.eastdowntownhouston.com/ - Even if not too many Chinese businesses are left, the new street signs would be a good memorial of sorts to what was there before
  11. Circuit City scheduled the Sharpstown store for closure - but now the whole chain went under anyway. http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories...12/daily54.html So what's next? Who will occupy the empty storefronts?
  12. We can see what Qatar's version of DeBakey is like

Well, about maybe two crazy Dallas folks. The rest explained why Houston is very robust
  14. BryanS is right - A lot of times work is outside of the loop - The business districts of Westchase, Uptown, and Greenspoint are outside the loop. In fact Greenspoint is both inside and outside of the Beltway. Also most of Houston's foriegn consulates are outside the loop. EDIT: Westchase also straddles the Beltway, so...
  15. You are funny -It doesn't take that long to cross the Beltway. I know the way of the 1000 Ninjas by Hattori Hanzo - that's how
  16. Technically HISD covers a portion of Houston - there are parts in other districts as well (Alief, Aldine, North Forest, etc.). Likewise there are other cities and some unincorporated areas in HISD. As for food, etc. I live inside the Loop and mostly go out to eat there, but sometimes I get food outside the Beltway because it is very good.
  17. Since Houston has many centers of employment it is difficult to define what a suburb is. A suburb of what? How do you define it? It's easier with northeastern cities than it is for Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta. Anyhow, as for families there are some neighborhoods even in 610 very much dominated by families. Some neighborhoods are gaining an influx of families.
  18. The website is back up. It says it will be "presented in the beginning of 2009."
  19. Here is Schooldigger info about Carroll: http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/...062/school.aspx - This is the racial demographic change http://www.schooldigger.com/go/TX/schools/....aspx?Entity=19 - This is the economic demographic change
  20. Honestly, I had no idea Jones was so highly regarded in the community (the Houston Press article informed me of this). In any consolidation I would have had the Jones staff become the head administrators of whatever new school they were in or I would otherwise keep the staff together, and I would not have merged with Blackshear. I would have had Jones go with either Gregory-Lincoln or MacGregor, or maybe have MacGregor go into Jones. Either way, there would be a consolidation, but the Jones staff is together. BTW the actual Jones building will house HCC classes.
  21. What HISD ought to do is have the Jones administration *take over* the new school - that way the success at Jones continues. Honestly I would have merged Jones with Gregory-Lincoln.
  22. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/tx/6147934.html Speaking of complexes - the shot men were actually shot at an apartment complex. They just came over to Sharpstown mall and were found there.
  23. Spring ISD is converting the former Westfield 9th Grade Center into a magnet math and science middle school: http://www.springisd.org/default.aspx?name=dec08.middle
