  1. I'm a bit surprised (and disappointed) by how obvious the location of the crown is.
  2. There are minimum sidewalk requirements (ex. 5' minimum width), but there are also lots of exceptions for things like utility poles that make the requirements borderline meaningless.
  3. Sure, but a Jack in the Box on a huge pad site? That's just wasteful is what that is.
  4. Man, I don't know about that. This kid was 15 at the time. There have to be better options than charging him as an adult.
  5. *phew* the mansion is staying. The new building isn't pretty but it's better than the surface lot that's there now.
  6. I find your consistent and predictable negativity almost... inspiring. Jackson St. is good. Is it the best bbq in the city? No. Is it better than Pappas (or anything else downtown)? Yes. By quite a bit. Prices are pretty reasonable too.
  7. You mean extend the Glassell all the way bay to Barkdull along Montrose? That would have been a pretty enormous wall. I for one am glad the houses are staying. They'll break up the street face on an oversized block and give the new building (which I expect to like) some context.
  8. Yeah, calling that "one building" is a bit disingenuous. The archdiocese has owned a huge number historic buildings, but that does not make it a particularly good caretaker of them. They might be better than HISD in that respect, but that's not saying much. It's also worth noting that a building actually had to be torn down to make room for the Foley House.
  9. The Clayton Building was just torn down on the exact same block. Just to repeat.
  10. Ok, this looks exactly like the rendering, so I'm not sure what anyone was expecting here. It uses industrial materials and is pretty minimalist, but that's exactly what was promised.
  11. It's also pretty far from Christian's. Plus, Christian's is a straight-up sports bar, which this might not be. There's plenty of room for both regardless.
  12. You build a park with the river you have, not the river you might wish you had. Buffalo Bayou is a bayou. It is slow-moving and muddy. I will never be blue. If something were done to turn it blue, it would no longer be Buffalo Bayou; it would be some twisted abomination playacting at something it never was.
  13. OMG YOU GUYS THEY CALLED THE COWBOYS GIRLS! THAT'S SO FUNNY!!!
  14. Now just put in a bike share station at the light rail station, one at the new fitz's, 500 more bike share stations throughout central Houston, and bam! genuine alternative to driving
  15. Ah the most Houstonian of all questions: but where will I park?!?!?
  16. Yes, I'd prefer to avoid the stereotype, but I also don't thing a range is at all appropriate in an urban setting. As to a warehousey entertainment complex? The thing is, a single downtown block isn't actually all that big. I wonder if just a brewery/brewpub wouldn't be a bad idea. Yes, 8th Wonder is nearby, but that could actually be a good thing. If Houston First prices the block aggressively enough it could be a good way to get a new business going while giving them enough time to find some place permanent (and with room for more capacity.)
  17. Yeah, everything I've heard indicates that they want to do something interesting with the property, something more similar to Sawyer Yards that actually reuses some of the existing buildings. We'll see once they make a meatier announcement though.
  18. Just don't look across the street at the Gulf building. Then you'll see actual masonry and the illusion will be shattered.
  19. Eh, the price of land right there has gone up quite a bit, and those big box stores don't cost much to build. It does seem crazy, but...
  20. This does seem like a great project, but I will really hate to see the old Fitz's Houston'ed for townhomes or a strip mall or something.
