  1. I think its West Gray instead of Allen Parkway - comparing it to where City Hall is. BTW someone may be interested in this shot of pecan park (musicman? danax? oops) Southmayd Elementary is center right with the circle drive. 2. interesting... http://www.hammanfoundation.org/GenInfo.htm George Hamman, born in Calvert, Texas in 1874, was the son of Ella Lawdermilk Hamman and Confederate General William H. Hamman, lawyer, a candidate for Governor of the State and a pioneer in the development of Texas. Mr. Hamman graduated from the University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee. He moved to Houston in 1898 to work for Planters and Mechanics National Bank, where he rose from clerk to cashier. After Planters and Mechanics' merger with the Union Bank and Trust, he was appointed Vice-President and on August 23, 1943 became President of Union National Bank. In addition to banking, he devoted much of his energy to the real estate, oil, gas and sulfur industries. In 1906, Mary Josephine Milby married George Hamman. Their union produced no children. They were active in the Episcopal Church and were prominent in Texas civic circles. notice the board of trustees...Charles D. Milby Jr
  3. G&G Model Shop is on Times in the Village sorry to hear about the Houston Roundhouse...I used to go there when it was in Bellaire and I was a lot younger
  4. Are they going make precinct level totals available this year (i.e. precinct 100 voted 82 for obama and 83 for mc cain etc)? I can't find them online I remember them usually being in chronicle maybe a week after previous elections.
  5. I vote for Mia Bella too. Great place and seems to always have lots of activity. I also like the tapas at Mi Luna in the Village. my rule is anyplace where there are things happening around you to keep the conversation moving and where you could easily walk somewhere before or after.
  6. i would imagine you are talking about Brady's Landing http://www.bradyslandingrestaurant.com/ the food isn't top notch but it is definately and interesting place to dine
  7. Bred, Any idea when the remains of the Kansas St bridge were removed? I swear i remember seeing it there in the 90's
  8. Hmmm..i always thought that was a picture at 528 looking south because of the curve in the highway but i see there is a slight curve north of 646 too. Anyone know for certain? whichever direction the picture is looking, there are power lines in the background. they could be the ones that run parallel to Sh96/Link rd today which would make the overpass 646 or maybe there is a set just north of Clear Creek that i cant remember right now.
  9. Here is part of the page from Sanborn you probably saw..note the 1948 copyright. There is definately a store there but it doesn't specify what and it isnt the same building that is there today (built in the early 60's) I have a 1958 phone book and it doesnt list a Weingarten's at that location but my 1975 phone book shows Weingartens No. 55 at 7061. Guess someone is just gonna have to look at some City Directories to figure out what is at 7061 (or 7055) Lawndale in '48
  10. I think the Weingarten's - Lawndale Plaza wasn't built until the early sixties. Did it really show the Weingarten there on the Sanborn maps Nena? (latest Sanborn map is early 50's, right?)
  11. does comcast offer Ovation here? i can't seem to find it

  15. Maybe it's a bagworm...we have these all over outside. Bagworms (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis) can be serious pests, especially in landscapes. Beginning in late May through mid-June, larvae of this native moth feed on arborvitae, junipers, pines, spruces, and many deciduous trees. Larvae build loose silken bags which cover their entire bodies. Bags are camouflaged with pieces of plant material, and may be mistaken for natural parts of the tree. Females do not look like moths (no wings, legs, antennae, eyes, or mouthparts) and remain in silken bags throughout their entire lives. When larvae are fully grown, their protective bag is 1.0 to 1.5 inch long. In late summer, male moths (black, with nearly clear wings approximately 1 inch across), emerge from their bags after pupation. One generation occurs per year.
  16. I periodically have this problem and have come up with a workaround. just reply to the post that has the image in it and within the quote it will show you the web address of the file you want to see. cut and paste it into a new browser window. Hope this helps.
  17. We had the New Book of Knowledge from Grolier (looked like the ones pictured below). Seems like one or two volumes would arrive every month in the mail and then you received a book each year with updates with stuff that happened or changed during the previous year. They were geared for about a junior high level. And some of my school papers were almost identical to the articles in the book...hmmmm. freak coincidence i guess
  18. it was a small mall. i remember a porte cache for dropping off people and then when you went in you were in a "plaza" like area and you had to go up a short set of stairs to go to the rest of the mall. my memory isnt too good..so that may be wrong. I seem to remember a Penneys and a Palais Royal as the main anchors. I Definately remember the Panchos. It had curved colorful booths and arched windows that opened into one of the mall hallways. the hallway had a barbershop in it. i think Mi Tienda is there now and something else...maybe apartments. Seems like it was torn down in the mid-90s
  19. the former Plaza is still extant... see my previous posting about the Plaza in the Alrey theater thread: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...st&p=104433 Another theater that showed art films for a short time (in the late-forties), was the Plaza/Vogue Theater. It's the old theater near the circle at Broadway and 45 (which is currently a Pawn Shop) and opened in about 1941 as the Plaza Theater. When the Santa Rosa opened nearby in 1947 (on Telephone Road), The Plaza, faced with the new competition from the Interstate-owned competitor, struggled and was eventually sold. The new owner renamed it the Vogue and started showing art films. The experiment did not last long and it soon reverted back to The Plaza. It only remained a theater until about 1951. the current address of the pawn shop is 3818.
  20. i will let you have some of my crazy ants. not many fireants around my house since these guys showed up...but of course now i have ants running around everywhere instead of just hanging out in their mound like a good ant should.
  21. Interesting. but I don't think I have ever seen a brown anole. I used to see a lot more of the green anoles than i do now. I see geckos more than any other lizard type creature. Growing up there seemed to be green anoles everywhere and I don't even remember seeing geckos until the mid-90's. Are they invasive too?
  22. WOW! My tallows plant themselves...before long my whole lawn will be full of tallows!! ahhhh.beautiful berry mess all over everything! but at least i will have a nice place for my spanish moss to hang
