  1. sad but true... It is getting better - but that's part of living in a revitalized space - one must deal with these upsetting factors. On the other hand, it seems at times as though the city police are busier setting radar traps in our neighborhoods than walking and patrolling them. I guess revenue generation is more important than the greater good for the community.
  2. I shop at the Fiesta at the corner of Dunlavey and Alabama...it's a GREAT alternative to the on on San Jac and the produce is exceptional. Living a few blocks from the Randall's, I only use it for a quick stop to pick up one item...like a gallon or milk...or in some cases, i'll go there to pick up some Starbucks... Midtown needs a real Starbucks...another gripe for a another thread though.
  3. There are two being built...one on the corner of alabama/main and one at labranch/gray...that's my understanding per the article in the HBJ.
  4. My interest is in Houston - anything that makes it a more popular and prosperous city garners my interest. This forum has proven to be a great vehicle for information, speculation and the like. I also like beer and cigars This has been a place where I have been able to learn a ton about my neighborhood.
  5. I think the brass canopies you're referring to are on the Club Quarters bldg...which is at the corner of Fannin/Rusk...this article is referring to one block south on Fannin.
  6. The sign is up now - at the corner of Gray/LaBranch...i wonder when ground breaking is...anyone have some scoop?
  7. i know you said that you don't want a smartphone...but just to be academic about it, i'd recommend strongly that you give the HP IPAQ 6315 a test-drive at T-Mobile. I've never been happier...and i'm pretty overly critical of these devices.
  8. For someone who's been touting the absolutivity of the Shamrock...that's quite a bit of negativity. Why do you think it will never get off the ground?
  9. As long as you're going to run on broad based assumptions, please also take into consideration the likelihood that Alice will also start enjoying the freedom that the A gives her to read the paper, get some office work done or just sleep. The A will likely give her the opportunity to decline the daily stress on her personal vehicle, by limiting miles driven and therby reducing maintenance cost. The cycle you describe is two dimensional and limited in definition...and i think the idea of projecting ridership based on the fact that people will see that there is more space available on the road is short sighted at best. I'd encourage you to also address other variables including population growth as well, as this dynamic will surely increase the amount of stress on the highways. I think it's safe to project that there will NEVER be a lack of congestion on Houston freeways.
  10. I have seen a project at Chenevert/McGown that looks like a four/five story structure...perhaps that's what this is.
  11. The Deco Diner was supposed to go up there by the Pierce....but no such luck
  12. Knowledge Beginnings ran that center for Enron and continued to do so after the Enron collapse. However, I believe they've now moved to the Concorde School facility in midtown.
  13. Much like pineda, we've had a GREAT experience with Downtown Montessori at Blodgett and San Jacinto - we're very happy with the program that our child has been enrolled in for some time now. Downtown Montessori
  14. tomv...I think you mistake 'rampant NIMBYism' for what is truly a call for common sense development. Regarding the Westpark tollway - it's usage is minimal, and the project is so far behind at the beltway8 exchange, that it's a laughable effort at best. A rail line would have been MUCH more sensible. Regardint the Katy Freeway, I'm not sure that the appropriate plans were truly debated in a forum that represented the thought of mass Houston. Most reasonable people would agree that improvement is a must...but would also agree that simply choosing the 'build build build' model isn't always appropriate either. I live along Elgin...and my "backyard" (all three feet of it from my home) virtually borders that road. I would WELCOME a rail line to go up Elgin to the Galleria. The rampant NIMBYism that you refer to is not actually NIMBYism...it's a call for sensible development.
  15. Frustration is inevitable... I do admire those that have fought the tough battles including the one that landed light rail. I certainly will not sit quiet...but frankly, it seems as though Houston doesn't care! I'm not waiting for others to fight the battle for me...more so, I'm looking for more people to get off their butts and say "NO" to sensless development like this. It seems like this board is the only place where I sense any support whatsoever for positive urban development... The politicians and such will surely hear from me...I just hope that we're able to organize a larger voice over time...
  16. Looks like they're back at it dbigtex56...drove by today and noticed quite a few people at work...the framework is up! Good news...i was worried about the slowdown.
  17. You know...I've been in Houston for 6 years now...not that long. But during this period, i've maintained an optimistic attitude that common sense will ultimately prevail. I'm now starting to resign myself to the thought that 'they' (houston's leaders) should simply pave the city over in concrete 100%....and be done with it. This 'idea' is disgusting at best.
  18. yahoo and paypal - the two best ways to go.... or you can set up an ebay store...but i believe that might be a bit pricier...positive side is that it integrates well with paypal
  19. I'm in NYC this week, and I noticed MANY of these same tanks standing at numerous intersections...in fact, I've counted at least 25 tanks in Times Square alone...
  20. Not to sound insensitive or anything....but does 101's demise require three different threads?
  21. I'm actually one who has vented aggressively about these problems in Midtown. And I had my aimless battle with the all-knowing 'houston_jack' several months ago. As a resident of midtown, I do believe that the problem has seen a significant reduction over the past few months - and that the police have been more active in identifying offenders, gradually having an impact on the number of 'johns' frequenting our neighborhood. Clearly, I'm not happy about the advent of another club/venue opening in midtown, but i'm confident in the right dynamic that is taking place. Regarding the meat rack, I'm assuming they're closed down since I rarely see any activity at that bldg. I'll be thrilled when i see it destroyed.
  22. VelvetJ...I couldn't agree more. The fact that Sugar Land can pull off mixed-use psuedo urban development should surely be a sign that an area like Midtown can as well. Granted, it'slikely easier to attract the big names to Sugar Land than it is to Midtown - but nonetheless, they seemto have the right idea and in midtown, i feel like we could learn something from it.
