  1. The Sugar Land task force travelled to Reston, Virginia, to study the Reston Town Center...which is the model for the one currently built and being built in Sugar Land. You'll find that the 'town center' concept is universal across the US in a number of communities...so i'm not sure that they're just copying the Woodlands.
  2. So you're saying that this was a move to please the illegal alien population? A BORN REAL AMERICAN (as you say) ought to understand that this is strictly a capitalist move, where a corporation is making FREE decision which it has every right to do. How you could possibly twist this into an anti-illegal-alien issue is beyond me...
  3. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/business/2896825 interesting...could be a merger/consolidation...
  4. I think it's quite the contrary in midtown. I understand your point about rising taxes - but it so happens that their land is in high demand - so they actually MAKE money because of the location of a camden or post complex. They can sell their house at a great profit, and move on to the next shack if they wish. This is America, it's called capitalism. It works. Regarding these 'shack' dwellers btw...many of them are renters. I'm not sure I understand your aimless demotivated attitude about the development of apartments in a region which can and will support them with high dollar rent value. I understand that you want more out of the development, and so do i...i am dissappointed that the midtown district doesn't implement measures to promote better design and use of space, but I still find your negative attitude to be baseless. Explain yourself.
  5. Midtown has a geographical advantage over Gulfton - with it's proximity to downtown, easy access to the med center, it's unlikely that a Gulfton complex would set in here. Additionally, note that there are huge changes in neighboring downtown which are acting as anchors...like the stadiums, main street, hobby center, light rail, convention centerl, the new downtown park...as downtown picks up, it will only further the sustainability of midtown. Apartments for urban dwellers is nothing new...and my thought is that this project will only promote midtown - i like the fact that they are trying to attract a large critical mass. Downtown apts are now being converted to condos at the St. Germain.
  6. silver lining on this is the mixed-use... i somehow imagined that houston and midtown specifically, would grasp the idea that this parcel of land represents the future flagship of midtown...it sounds like another run of the mill complex to me... i'll wait and see...
  7. Comparing the dome to the Capitol bldg is ridiculous. Let's put some things in perspective here...
  8. I believe the building you're inquiring about behind the old texaco bldg is the soon to be club quarters hotel...
  9. I parked on that lot last night...and so did many others. The lot still operates as it did pre-fence. I wonder if they will close it in the near term...the new groundbreak date is set to be December now right?
  10. Htown...i couldn't agree with you more. This fear of zoning or design constraints is unbelievable. Everytime I visit other cities...and see the urban hotspots that are being developed...the enthusiasm about midtown gets sucked right out of me...
  11. I'm sure I can come up with one or two instances where i was completely hacked off with some aspect of blockbuster...i've never had that problem with netflix...maybe i'm the only one.
  12. That campaign was a mega-failure. This morning, the associated press released numbers on various demographics - only 1 out of 10 voters between the age of 18 and 24 actually voted. Now that is BAD. All that hype about the youth vote was bunk.
  13. Recent email received from BBP: In the Works - 2004 Wednesday, November 3, 11:30 am
  14. The readers at HAIF seem to be some of the most informed Houstonians I come across...so I am reaching beyond the regular dialogs of downtown, midtown, development and real estate...and asking you where you have had the best Thai food in Houston? I've come to appreciate the various aspects of commentary that I value on this board...thanks!!
  15. I've had those shuttles drop me off at home before...a simple $5 tip usually gets me that...but of course, I live in very close proximity to the Hilton Americas and Four Seasons where the others get dropped off first. Another services is http://www.texansshuttle.com I've only used this once...but it's the same as the other one...
  16. H-Town Man...that will likely be a challenge no matter where it's built. I do believe that the evolution of the downtown/midtown/neartown area will take us in a direction where these public spaces get the appropriate use they've been developed for...and not the homeless shelters that they tend to become.
  17. I like the comparison of Bryant Park in NYC as it's far more appropriate than Central Park - I too surveyed the area and agree that it's size is limiting the projects scope. However, starting small is a good idea as well. Downtown Houston is not that big. Developing a green pocket which truly functions as a gathering space will be a great accomplishment. The key is seeing the project through - a task that Houston fails at so often.
  18. http://www.airportexpresshouston.com/ Here's what I usually use to get to the airport. I've been able to avoid the cabs...
  19. Why wouldn't it? Because these are 'reserved' units...quite different from 'sold units' as you refer to them. Look...I don't want to paint myself as a pessemist...but this does require a dose of reality. They were supposed to break ground earlier this summer...and now it's December. Let's hope it happens.
  20. Cinco...what happened to the project over by the ballpark? Same story... Look...that's exactly what they want you to believe. I'm not so dumb, as to not know what month comes after November. I am smart enough to ask questions and make intelligent inferences. A fence around the lot means squat. When I see them moving dirt and giving up the revenue from the parking, I'll believe it.
