Thanks for the photo updates guys. Quick question from an out-of-towner, is the lane the train is on separated from traffic at all like the Main street line, or can you drive on the tracks when the train isn't there?
  2. No way, at 50 mph and under the noise is significantly reduced. The parallel I-10 highway produces much more noise, what a silly reason for it not to continue downtown. There should be two stops in inner Houston, one at 610/290 where the BRT down Post Oak will connect, and one in Downtown Houston where the light rail line will connect. Serves the most people easiest.
  3. Tunnels are fine from a practicality standpoint, people can pretty much go wherever they want without having to go outside, which is convenient. Although I wish that there were some tunnels for trains as well downtown. They suck from an aesthetic point of view, making downtown Houston look dead and lifeless from the streets, but whatever.
  4. The noise of a HSR line is nowhere near that of a freight train. Perhaps it might be comparable to a small to medium sized highway, except the trains will only make a sound every 30 minutes or so, while highways have a constant hum of cars.

Sadly, I'd be surprised if either airport gets rail service within the next 30-40 years or so, METRO seems to be abandoning their rail plans. Or they've kept quiet about any long range plans at least. I doubt that 2007 master plan is still in play.
  6. LOL - I love how in the pic the guy's right blinker is on in a left turn only lane, smh.
  7. Flew into IAH tonight and saw the Emirates A380 parked at Terminal D. She's a beaut'!
  8. Seems like a neat development, but part of me thinks that after work is completed, it'll just be as dead as usual in non-business hours. Much like Houston Pavillions, err Green Street. Is there a plan for more actual retail along this stretch?
  9. Culberson will be in office until he decides to step down. And in his place will be someone with similar ideology. METRO could be doing a lot more to build this line. The University Line isn't even on their radar right now, unfortunately.
  10. While I agree with what you're saying in terms of those neighborhoods having the amenities like retail that make up walkable neighborhoods, one of the most important aspects of walkability is nice wide sidewalks in good condition, with good pedestrian street level interaction. So I would disagree that neighborhoods like the Heights and Montrose are walkable in the traditional sense.
  11. I think it's fair to say that Houston's the best from a transit "access" standpoint. We have tons of bus routes all over. Now whether the quality is as good as it should be for a city this size is another debate.
  12. Wow, that looks very nice. Thanks for posting the vid!
  13. Is that the central square building in the background being totally gutted? Thanks for the pics.
  14. I feel like this is more of a question of what is local vs. what is regional. TxDOT is clearly a state transportation agency that should cover ALL modes, not just rubber-tired infrastructure. But should they be doing local feeder roads? Or the 610 loop which is purely local infrastructure? It's an interesting debate for sure.
  15. Politics as usual. Anti-rail people have powerful friends.
  16. Considering that METRO forks over over a quarter of its revenue towards building roads (something no other major transit agency in the US is required to do) then I would think that the city should foot the bill for the "street" portion of light rail projects. In fact, a METRO board member even suggested this as a plan to get the University line built. METRO would pay for the rail lines and the city (using GM payments) would contribute a few hundred million dollars for road reconstruction.
  17. This line is just one disappointment in a long, long line of disappointments/failures/missed opportunities regarding rail in Houston. The most important and highest ridership line in the approved referendum will not get constructed. Business as usual. Heavy rail would be better, but that ain't happenin'!
  18. Haha it's a little shaky but the effort is much appreciated ricco!
  19. Thanks for the video, ricco. There's a lot of choppiness and pixels in the video for me, is that something wrong on my end? EDIT: looks fine now, nevermind.
