  1. Mold, the new radon and asbestos rip off masterminded by lawyers.
  2. I vote that they should tear it down but only so that Exxon, one of the largest companies in the freaking world, can build a replacement tower to properly represent itself in our skyline. Come on Exxon, have some panache with all that cash we're giving you.
  3. I have always said I love the Fed Bank. Some people in Houston has such tacky taste. I'm sure the people who hate it would probably love a spanish colonial with fake arches and a red tile roof. Here Houston gets a bona-fide piece of Architecture and they don't like it? Maybe they should have hired a draftsman to design it!
  4. Love Mai's, been going there since the 80's when it was a scary smoke filled restaurant, but was open after the clubs all closed. Still go there, with my kids, but that place sure has changed.
  5. Bought some property in Braes Heights, actually in Ayshire. Hope to do something with it.
  6. I agree, he wasn't an architect but he knew great architecture. Wish he was still doing big projects in Houston, but am proud that he is from here.
  7. Nice pictures, but as I suspected, the dome is hardly visible on street level because its too shallow.
  8. Went to see a movie at Grand Palace and the parking is actually $3. My bad. Still, big freaking deal. As a small business owner, I empathize with jerks that try and park in the restaurant parking to see a movie. Umm, those are for restaurant customers. That's just in bad form to take up parking for 2 hours. It $3 dollars people. Anyway, with property values going up, its the only way to get a movie theater in that location. I will say this, I also read that AMC Meyer Park is closing. I remember when it was new and there were huge crowds there. When I was dating my wife, we'd go see a ton of movies over there. Great memories. But its time has passed. Heck they already tore down the Cinaplex Odeon and it was newer than Meyer Park!
  9. Who cares about 2 lousy bucks for parking when a ticket is $10? I go to Grand Palace for all the block busters in the first or second weekend, before they are relegated to the smaller screens, as their big screens are nice with great sound systems. I went to AMC First Colony to watch Spiderman 3 and the sound was awful and the projector was blurry.
  10. It wasn't a shopping center he did in Sugar Land, its was a speculative 3 story office building. I think he planned for three but they only built one. Didn't he also do the Rothko Chapel?
  11. Yawn. Ugly building. Why not hire the architects that did the UT nursing school. It won a bunch of awards.
  12. Another idiotic design is the new underground feeder road from 610 northbound that merges with 59 northbound. If your on the 59 feeder it will merge with the 610 feeder but it is totally blind. So they closed off one lane, the only problem is tons of cars use the feeder, they exit on New Castle to avoid the giant traffic jam on 610, and many want to make a left on Richmond. I thought they did all this big buck work to help traffic in the Galleria Area? I think its made it worse.
  13. Sorry about that, I meant 59 northbound to 610 southbound. Its a huge bottleneck and it causes all the traffic there at the intersection. People go so freaking slow on that connection, because its another blind merge from the connector from 59 southbound and then all the kamikazi guys on 610 trying to exit on Fornace. Do the traffic engineers even scope out the traffic patterns before they design these things?
  14. Again, who did these designs? All that construction and money for basically the same results! Idiots! No accountability. Why is the 59 northbound to 610 north only one freaking lane?!!??!?!??!?!? What they need to do is shut down the Chimney Rock entrance ramp there.
  15. Let's all pitch in and buy it! It will always be the Republic Bank Building to me.
  16. UST not a research univeristy, nor does it claim to be nor aspire to be. Its a close knit Liberal Arts College run by Catholic Priests.
  17. They finally finished Phase 1 of the storm sewer upgrade/street repave and it looks great! I can see how property values are going to go up with the new streets/curbs and new sidewalks. Has that fresh concrete look to it. Surprisingly, part of Phase 1 includes Knollwood, just south of Braes Bayou. I guess it was originally part of Braes Heights. The second Phase is on Academy. Don't know when that's going to start though. Supposedly going out to bid this year.
  18. I disagree, its nice that they distinguished each store as a separate looking store front. In the Village, only the signs are different, at least in the new parts. Makes it visually more interesting and scaled for pedestrians.
  19. I agree, look at the real estate forum for proof. Some guy is asking for help finding an "architect" to do a Mediterranean house, and he got lots of replies.
  20. That's how I envisioned the West U Village. Not the crappy feaux french red tile roof crap they are going to build.
  21. I highly recommend this FREE lecture. You get to see the St. Thomas campus, and you get to hear a pretty good lecture.
