  1. The plan of the church is the classical plan of a cathedral, forming a cross. At the intersection of the cross is a dome. There are rose windows. There are lots of cues taken from old world cathedrals. Only they are rendered in contemporary design and modern construction methods. For example, St. Martins looks wonderful but does a steel and concrete church really need buttresses? That Sacred Heart is devoid of elements like this doesn't make it lacking history and culture. Anyway I applaud the catholic church for moving forward, you can't always look back. Look at the stupid fire station 1 for an example.
  2. I disagree, its full of history and culture. Just not the fake kind.
  3. Wernicke, funny you should bring this up... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/5583892.html
  4. Yea, let's take California as an example, they have more than 2 tier one schools, in fact they have 10! Its not wonder they produce companies like google, yahoo, Apple and HP! Texas needs more tier one funded schools so we don't get left behind. And UH is the clear choice to be the third one in Texas. It would attract the kind of students that the city already has jobs for, like NASA, engineering companies, law, medicine, etc.
  5. That's cool that the Rice building shares the campus geometry instead of the Med Center's. Well either that or its conceited of them.
  6. That latest photo just illustrates how laughable out of place the new firehouse is. Sad for Houston as its probably going to be around for 50 years. That tower is so constipated in design, what a waste.
  7. I took a look at it. It has horrible foundation problems and the previous owner did absolutely no upkeep on this little gem. I saw water leak marks on the ceiling. And some of the windows needed replacing. The backyard totally rocks though, it really is like a hidden paradise back there.
  8. Bravo, bravo, bravo to UH! Looks like someone finally realized that building dorms to apartment like standards doesn't cut it in a college setting. Upgrading the construction standards for the new lofts is definitely a step in the right direction. Too bad those other dorms built in the past 10 years didn't get the same treatment. If you ask me, you need to build dorms like jail cells. CMU and concrete and metal. Not sheetrock or carpet or ceiling tiles! These are housing college students for crying out loud. Basically, they need to be able to hose down the rooms after every semester!
  9. Man, that's another part of my youth. Oh well, what sucks for that location is its right next to the WestU sewage treatment plant. It get stinky sometimes. I thought it was a good idea to only have civic buildings next to it, ie, Rice School and Shriners.
  10. What's around the Perry Homes red brick firehouse that makes it ridiculously out of place? Oh I don't know, the new shinny Metro Building, or the Catholic Co-Cathedral. You know, buildings designed by real architects. Its like whoever designed it never even went to the site to check out its surroundings. Check out the pictures by musicman, those fake pediments are hilariously out of scale, as is that tower.
  11. Which red brick building is across the street? Are you talking about the ones across the Pierce Elevated? Not really part of downtown is it? I stand by my opinion, its atrocious. That's what's wrong with Houston, no one wants to look to the future, there isn't a sense of progress, just badly rehashed styles.
  12. What an atrocity! I think to make it match the station, the firemen should use horse drawn water pumpers. Red brick in that part of downtown looks totally ridiculous!
  13. Niche, what would you rather have, just a stand alone parking garage? That's ugly, at least with retail/services on the ground floor/second floor, it makes it more usable as an urban space. FYI, there are actual University offices at the UH1 Garage, not just retail.
  14. I went to Strake Jesuit and Sharpstown Mall was my hangout. Man good time and great memories there. I remember buying my first CD at Foleys. Buying furniture at Store House for my room and playing arcades at Goodtime Charlie's and then at the video arcade next to JC Penny's. Heck I remember when it was just one story and they added the second floor. Sad to see its decline but I guess time marches on.
  15. Niche, $38/semester is like 8 Starbucks coffees or 1 tank of gas. Hardly a deal breaker for today's students. I understand your point, but UH is trying to plan for the future, so I'm all for tearing up surface parking and doing something else with it. The Garage at UH1 is pretty nice with retail/services on the ground floor.
  16. So they get rid of surface parking and charge more for parking in the garage that it replaces? That's just wrong. edit: I just did a quick look at the rates, its not a lot more to park in the Garage compared to regular parking, a difference of $77/year or $38/semester. That's cheap compared to all the other fees. Student Parking Permits Annual Semester Spring/Summer Garage $200.00 $120.00 $200.00 Resident Hall $172.00 $103.00 N/A Student $133.00 $79.00 $133.00 Economy $50.00 $50.00 $50.00 Economy Plus $75.00 $75.00 $75.00 Disabled $124.00 $74.00 $124.00 Motorcycle $50.00 $50.00 $50.00
  17. Niche, UH already sells more parking permits than parking spaces. So it won't be a problem getting those garages filled. And I don't think it costs any more to park in the garage than surface lots. Its a flat rate permit.
  18. Cougar Place, exactly why I hate the new "dorms" that they built. Its the same crappy apartment style construction that doesn't last; read stick construction. Plus the way they are designed, doesn't lend itself to college type living. I mean they are fenced in and are far from campus proper by foot travel. What they should do is build a tower and say that nothing can be built that is more than 15 minutes by foot away. UH has serious urban sprawl.
  19. Let me guess, spanish colonial with fake arches and a red tile roof.
  20. It shows what kind of guy Mattress Mac is when he pleaded no contest. He didn't fight it or try to weasel out of it.
