  1. Nice pictures, but as I suspected, the dome is hardly visible on street level because its too shallow.
  2. Do you guys even remember what it was like before HD or Lowes? Hardware stores sucked back then. I'll take the huge selection over good service anyday.
  3. Went to see a movie at Grand Palace and the parking is actually $3. My bad. Still, big freaking deal. As a small business owner, I empathize with jerks that try and park in the restaurant parking to see a movie. Umm, those are for restaurant customers. That's just in bad form to take up parking for 2 hours. It $3 dollars people. Anyway, with property values going up, its the only way to get a movie theater in that location. I will say this, I also read that AMC Meyer Park is closing. I remember when it was new and there were huge crowds there. When I was dating my wife, we'd go see a ton of movies over there. Great memories. But its time has passed. Heck they already tore down the Cinaplex Odeon and it was newer than Meyer Park!
  4. Who cares about 2 lousy bucks for parking when a ticket is $10? I go to Grand Palace for all the block busters in the first or second weekend, before they are relegated to the smaller screens, as their big screens are nice with great sound systems. I went to AMC First Colony to watch Spiderman 3 and the sound was awful and the projector was blurry.
  5. Try this UH alumni, he does great sports work.... http://www.pbase.com/carboncopy/profile
  6. I'd say it depends on which neighborhood you finally choose. If in the loop, I don't see anything wrong with living in a nice pre WWII bungalow. But if you're moving to the burbs, getting a new house is very appealing. If you pick the right neighborhood, you even get the lates technology like ATT Uverse.
  7. Yea don't store gasoline for extended periods. It actually goes bad. But what you can do is buy it right before the storm hits. You'll have ample warning. But if you don't use it for the generator, use it for your car.
  8. Taste of Houston sucked. Service was terrible, decor was terrible, food was so so. I know they wouldn't last. I'm glad 59 Diner is opening, I hope they stick to their proven formula of being a diner. That's why the original is still around. Gringeuax's Seafood is terrible. The food is mediocre and the price is high for what you get. The decor is kind of iffy, with shiny tables that never seem to get clean, yuk! Gringo's Mexican is great though, we eat there all the time.
  9. Nice. Bravo. Great addition to the Heights.
  10. So according to that Hurricane map, almost all of Houston proper is not in the evacuation zone even in a CAT 5 hurricane? Why did everyone leave during Rita? We're they afraid of the levies breaching?
  11. Hey just going by what you posted. In Houston, Bilingual School means, they cater to non English speaking student, meaning Spanish speaking. What a waste of resources. I guess what you "meant" was you wanted to teach your kids a second language, to me that's not a bilingual education. That's just regular education.
  12. Why bilingual education? I hate bilingual education, its an unnecessary burden on our school system. Learn English, like every other immigrant group did when they came to America. Before you cast stones, my wife is hispanic.
  13. Yea, DIY, it will only take 30 minutes tops, that's what they show on TV!
  14. True there are lots of home in Houston you can buy for $100K - 150K, but if you read the article, its for those people who are into contemporary living. Young guys who live in loft in the inner city, who eventually need to move to a real house.
  15. I remember the days of $100/sf custom homes. Oh well, those days are way behind us.
  16. $80SF? That is a bargain! I've been trying to build a house and everyone I've run into says $150-200.
  17. Whoever is in charge of tollway design should be fired on the spot. Also, on the 59S/BW8, the concrete on the feeder is super bumpy. Its brand new, and its clear it was done wrong. HCTRA should force the idiot contractor to fix it. We paid good money for it and it should be done right, but I'm afarid, there was probably some money under the table going on.
  18. I have no problems with replicas, but as with anything, there are bad replicas and good ones. As pointed out by other posters, the "patent" has expired long ago so there is no reason for good replicas to be 100% the same as the originals. I have a couple of Corbusier chairs that are replicas, and they even have real feather cushions like the original design. So I say go for it. You'll save a ton, and since nothing today is "original" buying from Knoll is just to expensive. BTW, don't buy more than 2 Barcelona chairs, they were designed for the king and queen of Spain. They only look good in pairs.
  19. Check out the Chronicle article with people voicing their opinions. Hilarious, some people are actually against this and defend running red lights. People are such idiots.
  20. It wasn't a shopping center he did in Sugar Land, its was a speculative 3 story office building. I think he planned for three but they only built one. Didn't he also do the Rothko Chapel?
  21. Yawn. Ugly building. Why not hire the architects that did the UT nursing school. It won a bunch of awards.
  22. Great pictures, nice facility. NO TO NASCAR!!!!!
  23. Southampton for sure and around Rice U and Hermann Park. Allen Parkway but not Memorial until you get to Memorial Park. Downtown just love driving around the tall buildings. Galleria down Post Oak with all the 70's -80's buildings.
  24. Another idiotic design is the new underground feeder road from 610 northbound that merges with 59 northbound. If your on the 59 feeder it will merge with the 610 feeder but it is totally blind. So they closed off one lane, the only problem is tons of cars use the feeder, they exit on New Castle to avoid the giant traffic jam on 610, and many want to make a left on Richmond. I thought they did all this big buck work to help traffic in the Galleria Area? I think its made it worse.
  25. Sorry about that, I meant 59 northbound to 610 southbound. Its a huge bottleneck and it causes all the traffic there at the intersection. People go so freaking slow on that connection, because its another blind merge from the connector from 59 southbound and then all the kamikazi guys on 610 trying to exit on Fornace. Do the traffic engineers even scope out the traffic patterns before they design these things?
