  1. Lots of first time posters and surprise surprise, this thread is directly linked from www.lovetthomes.org. I think this forum is being taken advantage of.
  2. Been looking in the area and its crazy! The builders are buying everything and driving the prices up. I noticed that they are redoing all the streets and sewer lines, which is great. Don't know if it will fix the flooding but it definitely makes the neighborhood look nicer. Lots of new construction, most McMansions but a few contemporaries hidden here and there. There is a nice one on Gramercy right behind the Shell research campus. Looks like a mini West U but still very mixed income.
  3. I threw that out there just for jeebus. I knew he'd get a chuckle. I think he did. Did you?
  4. Whatever you win. The gospel according to jeebus. I just reread the entire thread and it seems you have a problem with people pointing out that EDTV isn't a wise choice to buy. This must be real important to you. Buyer's remorse? I go on enjoying my 42inch computer monitor that displays the full 1080 HDTV signal, you enjoy your low rez EDTV.
  5. Dude you are so blind, literally. EDTV can't show 1080i IN 1080i, it down converts it to 480p which isn't HD! Can you accept that as fact? Heck even a standard tv can "show" HD programing but it won't be HD quality. Why can't you understand this simple simple fact? 480P is not HD. What you're viewing on your EDTV is not an HD quality picture, it throws away more than half of the information to downgrade it to EDTV standards! Yes, on a real HDTV that can display a full resolution of 1080 you'll need HDMI with the copy protection enabled. Of course your EDTV doesn't care about 1080 copy protection because its downgrading the picture into 480! The movie companies don't care about lowly 480p! Which is your EDTV. I don't know how much simpler I can try and convey this simple fact. Don't try go give wrong advice. BTW, TWC DVR, even if you have problems with it, just turn it in and they'll replace it for you. At $7/month that's a pretty good deal. How much is it to buy a Tivo setup? Again, who is going to spend thousands of dollars on a fancy new HDTV and not get subcription service to take full advantage of it? Might as well get a regular TV or EDTV. You must feel really sorry for being duped into buying EDTV that you have to try and convice everyone that they don't need HDTV! I'm laughing at you the whole time. But want to give real advice to people who are asking.
  6. Well since I haven't used over the air tuning in 15 years, I don't think that will be a problem. As the majority of HDTV buyers probably will have subscription services because why pony up huge amounts of money for 3 HD Channels? Jeebus, man you should run for office. As nothing sticks to you. BTW, I've had zero problems with my TWC DVR, nothing like what jeebus has posted. Don't take his word as gospel, like he does. Anyone who touts EDTV is simply doing you a disservice.
  7. Jeebees, this is the last on this inane thread, but I will say this, you are the king of semantics! Call my HDTV a computer monitor if you wantk, but to the rest of the world, its in fact an HDTV. BTW, if you have an HDTV, you might be better of with TWC as they don't compress their HD signals as much as satellite. Of course jeebeez can't see the difference with his low rez EDTV, but you other guys that have real HDTVs/Computer monitors, can see the difference. Time Warner DVR has worked well for me. Watching HD movies from HBO is incredible. Before you invest in TiVo just give TWC DVR a shot, there is no year long subscription and there is no penalty for terminatin early so I would recommend getting it for at least a month. And note to jeebeez about your friends that said they can't see the difference btw your EDTV and their HDTV, they were just trying to be nice to you, as everyone here can see what a totally nutter you are. For all you guys who think EDTV and HDTV would look the same, go to any electronic store and compare them side to side, you can clearly see the difference.
  8. Jeebees has quoted me in his signature! Wow! I'm so honored. Let me simplify this for you jeebees. Your EDTV can recieve HD signals, but it can't display them in their glorious high definition greatness, you're stuck with maringally better than standard TV picture quality, its like taking a 5megapixel photograph and down converting it to 1megapixel. Its funny how you keep saying your EDTV shows you HD content, technically yes but its in a substandard format. Hilarious! And call my HDTV a computer monitor if you want, I'll just go on and enjoy viewing my HD signals in its native 1080 format which is in the order of 4X the resolution of your EDTV! Anyway, I don't know of to many 42" computer monitors. Here is the exact copy of the Best Buy description of the TV I bought. Why don't you skim it and find out how wrong you are about everything you've posted. Take note about the copy protected HD content via HDMI. You must be jealous that I found a 1080p 42" HDTV that cost less than your EDTV. I think my Cell phone has a higher resolution than your EDTV. You have DVR cable? Wow, you bought a TV with a built in tuner and you're not even using it! What a waste! I will agree with you that Time Warner sucks though. Yes they do but what other choice is there. For true HD quality, Satellite is just to compressed. Your still owned.
  9. OMG you are either super dense or just can't face the facts! Your ED TV can't produce HD pictures! Its impossible for it to show anything more than 480p. Real HD starts at 1080i, sure your TV can down covert 1080i to 480p but so what? Its still 480p which isn't HD! Don't try and give out false information to people asking for advice. And I was well aware of what I was buying, why would I need a built in tuner if I was going to use cable service for viewing content. You are always harping on telling people to save money by buying inferior technology (EDTV) but now you're saying that they should buy an HDTV with a tuner which most people won't even use! Dude, you are so wrong on so many levels its not even funny! Where is the rebuttle on the HDMI? Don't tell me your EDTV takes HDMI? ED TV was made to dupe people like you into thinking they are getting HD quality TV when in fact you are not! Here it is in simpler terms for you. 480 does not equal 1080, for that matter it doesn't even equal 720. Can you understand this simple equation? BTW, its not a computer monitor. You can use it as one, but its an HDTV. If you get right down to it, all HDTVs are computer monitors since real HD signals are digital, not like your EDTV which takes only analog. The HDTV I bought takes HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component and S-Video. You just can't admit you're wrong. I think the term you're looking for is OWNED!
  10. How would you know? You don't have a 1080P TV? Your TV can only view 480P. So basically, you don't know what you're talking about. You can't view anything over 480p. Is that not simple enough for you? HDMI is purely digital and that's why the movie industry wanted some type of "protection", S video and RCA are analog, they aren't as scared because it won't make an exact copy. HDMI has copy protection built in. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1138084694260 I had a 10% off coupon to go on top of the listed price. With free in home delivery and they hauled away my 11 year old 32" TV which weighed like 200lbs and was broken. I'll probably end up keeping this new TV another 10 years at least, I'm cheap like that.
  11. You are wrong, my 1080P TV won't show 1080 material unless its HDMI. HDMI has a security feature that lets it know that you're not hooking up your 1080 source to your computer and copying it. In fact, there are some 1080i HDTVs that can't even show 1080i because they were produced before the HDMI standard was released. Its a big what to do over on the HDTV forums. I dont' know how the DVD player upconverts DVD to 1080i but it sure looks good on my TV, way way better than on my friends regular TV. No lines and the picture is as smooth as butter. No way I'm sending back my HDTV for EDTV, that's laughable. Infact, I'd wouldn't buy any TV that isn't 1080P right now unless I had to. I keep my TV's a long time and want it to be ready for the future. EDTV is only 480p right? BTW, my 42" LCD 1080P TV cost $1800. I'm sure it'll get cheaper. ED TV 640X480=307,200 HD TV 1280X720=921,600 HD TV 1980X1080=2,138,400 I think that just about anyone will see the difference between the formats.
  12. I just got a true 42" LCD 1080p TV and can tell you that yes you can see the difference. Its one fo the few 1080p TVs available. I then bought a new Sony DVD player that upcoverts DVDs to 1080i. The results are fantastic! The upconvert gets rid of the black letter box bands, but doesn't distort the picture. I also have TimeWarner HD that upconverts to 1080i, and its also very very nice. The one thing you have to do is get HDMI cables because its the only way to get 1080 signals into your TV. HD is the way to go.
  13. Why are you guys worrying about Rice? They are well endowed, they don't need anymore funding and I think we call all agree that their reputation is in no danger of falling. They recently got a mega donation to help fund one of two proposed new residential colleges on campus so they can grow their enrollment. Rice is the last school in Texas that needs any help from the state. Their future is secured and they are a major asset to the city of Houston. Again, tier one in this discussion is for state funding. Not national rankings.
  14. I agree, he just won the tax appraisal game. They never lower the property value so all they can do is lower the house value.
  15. Here's an interesting article from Chris Bell...... We only have two Tier I universities in Texas. A Tier I institution is basically a research university. They take in millions of dollars in federal research funding and churn out PhDs in science and math. Tier I institutions are the turbo engines of the 21st Century economy, but here in Texas we only have two of them. It's been like this for so long that some of us might have a hard time realizing just how out of whack Texas is with the rest of the country. I often joke that we
  16. Just heard that HISD police station was flooded. What the heck, now does a city office get flooded after Allison? They had to transfer command to the county emergency offices. Waste waste waste waste waste. Thats HISD for you.
  17. Why is this such a hot topic? Again, the rail is going through Richmond in Afton Oaks, its already a freaking 6 lane mini highway!!!! I see people zooming through there all the time. How is rail going to change this? Rail is even quieter than most of the cars that run through there. It is just silly.
  18. Man I know that guy is mad, but that site is racist as heck!
