  1. I was referring to areas that have reached an affluent level of commercial development, for ex. Uptown. btw hyde park is in montrose
  2. The homeless and panhandlers tend to move on to more transitional areas when new development encroaches. So eventually, as midtown develops, this won't be issue. Personally, it depends on who's asking for change; but generally, I have no compassion for strangers who only care about separating me from my meager, yet hard earned internship money.
  3. that's the phased plan so far.. i can't go into detail atm & it will take time, but when I can I'll try to provide an update in the appropriate thread
  4. Overscaled or out of scale. Also, I don't think the graffiti artists will mess with it, whilst I'm pretty sure UST is wise enough to give it a paint resistant finish coat. Edit: Where's the clever Philip Johnson symbol play like we see with the split obelisk at UH?
  5. MOST TALENTED INTERN EVAR :P

  6. A resident of 1016main told me an interesting story the other day while we hung out on his balcony. One afternoon, a military helicopter landed on the roof and 4 soldiers or SWAT did a roof sweep and then proceeded to sweep the building. They had assualt rifles but he said no shots were fired, or at least from what he could hear. About 5 minutes later they reappeared on the roof and took off. So we could only speculate that the military/police are occasionally using the building for training excercises and if so, does the property owner know?
  7. if montrose is not the epi-center than really.. where in houston could it be?
  8. the intersection is picking up new business we just recently completed CD's for a new 24hour dinner where Alfredo's was located
  9. sevfiv, this is a tourist map from Fotoflite Company, Houston/New Orleans, (800) 766-7986 copyright 1992 my father bought this for me when we moved to Houston the previous year from NOLA sorry the scan is small, but the white text, reads Cenikor Foundation (old william penn hotel) 1915
  10. downtown has less parking than uptown or midtown, that can be a deterrent in determining where people will go
  11. I would like to hear more dj's with passion that transcribes onto the dancefloor and the club owner excuse, seriously get outta town man & as far as the crowd, they rule. eh, mediocrity runs this town, but not for long.. edit@michael day hey man! welcome to houstonarchitecture.info, nice score on the Pat Nice show in feb, us house heads gotta stick together p.s. i gotta new monthly w/ open tables, more info at HB
  12. also this place is based outta dallas but also have a rice village location: Passport Exhibition Gallery 2419 SHEPHERD DR. HOUSTON, TX. 77019 ----> 713-529-0500 support your scene.
  13. never been to Whisky Creek or the Roof.. A38 is poketed in a shopping center off louisiana and has one of the best soundsystems in town (bassmax by david lee), the crowd depends on the evening's promoter a buddy of mine is the barmaster of XO & has been trying to get me to go for more than a month now, eh houston is nebulous like that Status is another new club opening early next year across the street from Rich's Rich's is under new management, so look for some programming changes now if some of these clubs would actually have decent tastes in music (like Zimms) than I might feel justified spending my money there, but i have zero tolerance for talentless local dj's. It would be nice if midtown had more established venues like Dallas' lower greenville's Zubar or expositon's Minc.
  14. this area around rich's has two bar/clubs in the works
  15. "Spencer Street" is often right w/r/t architecture at large edit: as far as it being a good school is concerned, i'm thinkin it's a bunch of kids playin on their parents dime
  16. as an event promoter, houston is a tough crowd, take their smokes away at the bar and seriously consider just declaring the scene "dead" as a whole. Besides, is houston not known for it's emphasis on business? edit: I'd like to see a design compromise, where all new bars must accomodate "x" amount of HEPA filtration n ventilation. All established venues/bars can remain as is. Imagine the cotton exchange and not being able to get your heffner on a stoogie, lolz!
  17. I always thought hildebrandt made for an excellent classroom prison experience when i went to school there, esp the vertical windows at the corners of classrooms and the ignored library staircase. Goodtimes.. As far as it being in bad condition, I'd say it's fine.
  18. yes they have kidrobots! it's a new fade, art toys, like the one i posted a pic of above qees kaws dunny's bearbricks james jarvis yeah i guess it's a collector thing i used to collect comics, records, art, renderings, you name it
  19. Next to brasil's is a new book store/ art gallery with some interesting finds. I spoke to the owner's who also own brasil's and they based this shop off of some similar types of shops in NYC & Frisco. They also carry some architecture books (but it's still no brazos); I recently purchased this qee (designed by tim biskup) there: check it out if your in the area
  20. i have a couple buddy's who live there too, i foresee them also being priced out. I can only hope they can do something for that parking garage, terrible design and very dangerous.
  21. I visited the new Fed bldg yesterday & despite the fact that from the outside I felt it was an "eyesore"; the interiors esp. the executive areas are quite nice, professional, & efficent; but not overly ornate (or showy) as to the fact that it's wealth in itself. The art within the building is very modern and i think will continuially look impressive over the years. The balcony dinning area is quite the highlight and the planned ivy growth will add a nice sense of comfort. Obviously it's downtown views are awesome, but what i thought was interesting is that it feels like 3 separate buildings; as if walking on skywalks between massive structures, it's placement of windows is truly optimal and for a totally secure building quite the opposite of what i orginally thought. Thankfully the color pallette tones down on the interior and it's got a distinct texas style untilitarian feel to the furniture detailing, notably the san jacinto room (where many of the public hearings will take place). The board room (located above the signage) impressed me the most, naturally, it's overview of the parkway and inset diguisal of technology. According to my tour guide it's location is based off of the success of other branch banks, specific to the Baltimore branch and it's effect on the surrounding area. It's a semi-public building with a museum like tour set up (still in the works) on the bank vault level showing you how the automated system works and what the Fed does. Publicly it also was mentioned that the steps are opened up on certain holidays like the 4th of july and that certain portions of the 2nd level main building will in fact be leased to private companies in need of security. The vault (seen from Allen Pkwy) is expandable to accomodate future growth. A large portion (roughly 60%) of it's budget went to the overengineering/post911safety/HVAC and that the remainder was for the "architecture" so in a sense i got a feeling the Fed did the most with what they could considering the turbulent times in which this building was being designed/constructed. -We were told that absolutly no cameras could be brought on premises-
  22. *check your building expiration dates* I predict in 20 years that these developments will be run by slum lords and that midtown will be the new ghetto.
