  1. There is a new Alpha program about to start up at St. Luke's on Westheimer. I took the course last year, and enjoyed most of it. Group meetings one evening a week are about it, and there isn't any pressure to commit to anything (I was thrilled about that!) This program is really an "primer" to what it means to be christian. It is supposed to be for anyone and everyone. Wether you believe in something or not, it is meant to be informative (but there are prayers and very much of a religious atmosphere if that makes you at all nervous) very casual. anyway, wanted to throw it out there. starts Aug22nd.
  2. don't you just love that white cotton ball they call a dog?
  3. Actually, you might be surprised, there were 15 or so toward the end of our last one... we had a great time, ensuring that some of the chickens who didn't go last time will come this time
  4. Has just opened on Waugh, north of Dallas. He is a heights local and apparently makes everying on the premisis. I'll stop by to check it out, but wanted to give a shout out to a new small business!
  5. mmm, tomato soup only minutes away! yeah! We already know about the banks, starbucks and 24hr. I wonder if we'll get some kind of craft store...there really is only one that I know of inside the loop, seems like that would be a good "empty" market. There's bound to be a salon of some sort... The neighborhood board indicates a Chick Fil A and a Best Buy coming. I would LIKE to see a CM or WF, but that's been beaten to death...I loath to think that a HD or Loews comes in... OH, a bookstore...I would LOVE a nice big bookstore as long as we are talking big chains...
  6. It is shiny with that new store smell I ran into LilyHeights and looked around wondering how many other HAIFers were there... I was impressed with the food section, much more than I expected. And the furniture selection was nicer than I usually see. It even has a Smith and Hawken isle. I walked out having paid my cover charge...I wonder if they can just take a direct deposite out of my check every month!!!
  7. do I smell a meet and greet? LOL. Last weekend I drove over there to check out the mystery foundation...and had to chuckle as I pulled up, one car was leaving the area, and as I left, one was pulling in (tan SUV) to look at it. Not just the Target lot, but that specific site. Those MUST have been HAIFers...there can't be any other phsyco groups in this town obsessed with looking at a foundation and trying to decipher what it will be
  8. good answer :> and let me support the store...all the plants I bought there are doing amazing, two weeks later, and already growing and flourishing. They never went through "shock".
  9. DON'T TELL ME THAT!!! I just bought about 80 pieces. I'm telling myself that it was quality sod. In fact, after only 2 weeks it is already growing like crazy and you can barely see the pieces anymore. Is that normal? (the correct answer is "no, that is great, amazing, you bought the best sod ever") I think buchannons only sells a few pieces at a time, and I should have bargain shopped...
  10. LMAO Lily! you are not alone! I cannot stand crowds, but I will brave them if only to be a part of this "event". I'm thinking of just tailgating for the day . I predict that this Target will be such a success, that other retailers will have to take notice and there will be a huge scramble to get space. Unfortunatley, I think it will be said Applebees and Best Buys and Loewes...I WISH we could have a Rice Village type retail, but I think we are in for a big box retailer center. I wonder though, if that type of retail will increase the surrounding property values, or decrease it? Not immediatley close, but in areas like the woodland heights, and the sixth ward...
  11. according to the woodland heights website there is a rumor of a soft opening on wednesday... this cracks me up, this is going to be the craziest opening of a target every! the whole hood is so excited about it :>
  12. Sod is 1.50 per sqft at Buchannons. And, not that hard to do yourself. The hard part is getting the ground ready for the sod.
  13. You aren't their demographic. Their demographic is the family in Kalamazoo Michigan coming to Houston for an event, but they don't have the time or the money to travel the state, so they have to get their fill here. They will probably take an afternoon to go see NASA, but can't take the time to go to Brenham (or what have you), so they stay at a hotel that "simulates" small town Texas that is in their mind's eye. A BIG, HUGE hotel up in Dallas. I think there are others. I got stuck there at a conference for 3 days...it was fine that there was no off-site transportation, cause everything we needed was there. Stores, like 10 places to eat, bars, cafe's, convention center, hotel, blah, blah blah...
  14. I can't figure out how to post it here, so let me know if you want one and i'll email it to you... the quality isn't very good...but you can read it and always go to the library. Does anyone have a website that they can put it on maybe and I can link it?
  15. in the process of researching my home...I keep getting hit with a BUNCH of stuff on Germans and the early settlers. There is a book on ebay right now about that very topic....60 bucks though, or I might have bought it!!
  16. In the Texas room of the old Library, I found a 1910 sales booklet for the woodland heights. It is in the neighborhood folders. It is so neat!!!! Pictures of some homes, pics of some interiors!!!! and the read is just classic! The area was apparently dry and, unfortunatley segregated. It is such a great historical picture though of the kinds of people who originally bought the homes. I'll see if I can scan it and attach it here.
  17. That's just it, she was from CA and she had heard of it! Granted, she didn't know it was about litter control, but she had still heard of it.
  18. Congrats! Looks groovy...Is this your first home purchase?
  19. Here Here! As a Reliant employee he drives me NUTS!!!! He doesn't SAY anything of any value. He doesn't TELL you what he is selling you. Just stands around being goofy. I can't stand him. However, I'm told that he gets very good marketing results. People actually DO trust in him. ah well.
  20. The "Don't Mess With Texas" slogan has been nominated for a very prestigious award. If it is to win, a Bronze Plaque will be placed on Madison Avenue's "Walk of Fame" and it will get a permanent place at the Advertising Icon Museum in Kansas City. Winner will be announced September 29th. Wouldn't it be cool for New Yorkers to have to walk past a Bronze Plaque every day that said "DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS?" Please go to www.votedmwt.com and vote for it. The competition is tough, like Got Milk?, What Happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, The Breakfast of Champions, and others. So...please vote early and often, and tell your fellow Texans to do likewise.
  21. thanks guys! and I forgot to mention before...neat pics, really like the enron/ymca one.
