  1. yup. our houses are the same i'm sure. you should swing by some time (wink wink) and check mine out for ideas/do's and not do's. The previous owner did a great job renovating the inside and leaving the outside in its original footpring. It is modernized, but with a slight nod to the past. for example, the took the 3rd bedroom (middle one) and converted it to a W/D closet and pantry in the kitchen, and a huge bathroom and closet on the bedroom side. So that I have a master "suite" and still have a guest bedroom and bathroom (original). He separated the public area of the house into a living/dining room and a kitchen/den area. The kitchen rocks if I do say so myself. I'll post pictures if there is interest, but again, no before shots (although I'm told it was ratty when he purchased it).
  2. WOW! how did you deal with the lead issue? the original paint on that house was surely lead based. I want to do a scrape down on mine, but for that reason do not think I can. The prev owner painted it, but I'd prefer a diff color and it is flaking off in parts anyway, so it needs work... would you mind telling me/us about how much that cost? I wish I had before shots of my "bungalow", these pics are making me want a project house of my own! Red, what style do you call your house? Mine is very, very similar. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if we had the same builders/designer (whatever they were called back then). Its not quite a bungalow but not quite a cottage either. p.s. nice avatar
  3. here is the guy's website http://www.offthekuff.com/mt/archives/007982.html#007982
  4. Great work! Glad to see some pics to inspire people to reno and see behind decades of weird decisions :> Issue of PC aside, that wall paper is pretty neat, if you have more of it in good condition, it is probably worth some money. This was a favorite childhood book of my father's.
  5. I'm the same way. I ended up going to Buchannons and explaining my wants/needs. A couple of the salespeople were fabuloous! They took me around and showed me the plants that would work and even designed the layout... I did the labor but still! Now just a couple of months after planing, the plants are all flourishing! I'm having weed issues, but that would happen regardless.
  6. The mosquitoes in Houston are tough birds! I have to bathe in that new sweat control stuff to even have a slight hope that they will stay away from me! The regular kind seems to make them just laugh... I wouldn't hold any trust in any system to really keep them away, I think it is just part of living in Houston. Someone mentioned spiders though, I just moved to the Heights a year ago, and I have LOTS of spiders! Is that just part of living in the Heights? I never had a problem with them in the Montrose or 6th ward...
  7. Yeah, I saw that BBQ sign too and mentioned it to some WHneighboors and they said it was for a party.
  8. HA! I also just got back from a trip to Portland/Seattle! I think we may also have an "egg conundrum". Which came first? The light rail or the pedestrian environment? I would LOVE LR all over the city. I like to think that I would use it...but then, where would I go? Houston is so spread out, that you really can't run many errands in a linear direction. Other than say 19th St, Highland Village and Rice, we don't have many areas of solid retail where you could jump on and off a train. We also don't have too many of the dense residentail areas like they do in Seattle/Portland. hmmm, the more I type, the more I'm convincing myself otherwise. At least inside the loop, west of 45, we probably can support it. Then if they link it to the east, it would encourage development.
  9. couldn't they just up the ticket prices and/or revamp the schedule and movies. provide better parking... I LIKE the idea that it is a theater, I think this many of us are in an uproar more about loosing the theater versus the building itself. just putting another restaurant or retail space in there will still result in us loosing a theater and a destination.
  10. you really are quite sick. you know this was a person right? someone's father, husband, friend. yes, he was a celebrity and larger than life and more than a little crazy (which is why he was a celebrity). it may have been his wish, but i have no desire to watch a snuff film. its so sad!
  11. For the record...a LARGE number of support your work Sheila. I will probably be there. But, we do have posters who are advocates of "its my right to do whatever i wanna and you don't matter" here.
  12. I just don't see how this was possible. Where was ground control? I'm like Moon, grew up with a pilot and have flown cessnas lots of times...I just don't see how it was possible! This is more than just pilot error, the tower had a large fault in this. and another thing...if the plane had gotten airborn, the length of the runway would no longer matter would it??? they were able to get the lift they needed to get off the ground...so short runway or no, that plane was airborn already so what brought it down? A stall maybe? the pilots trying to overcompensate?
  13. I'm up for a fundraiser!!! I would even host it! What about a BBQ/Auction or something? All proceeds go to the support? Like NPR I have a great place to host it, live right across the street from a park with baseball fields in town with views of downtown... If our regulars each brought some food/auction items, it could go smoothly!!!! $50 a month is a trifle for so many regulars, and we could all meet...
  14. That NPR story this morning got me to wondering... They mentioned this commission might be offering tax reprieves in exchange for a historical status. Could that have been the end game? Historical status isn't that easy to get I think, and the ROT is not THAT old, or THAT significant. Maybe they planned the "demolition" to get a public outcry to save the theater, and therefore...taxes. Too much conspiracy theory???
  15. If you rename the thread "Guilty Confessions of TV Trash" I'll chime in with Big Brother. I can't help it. and this season has been pretty fun to watch. all kinds of backstabbing and lying and unexpected plays.
  16. I have friends who would LOVE to live there... to each their own! (but their resale market will be small!) I have friends who would LOVE to live there... to each their own! (but their resale market will be small!)
  17. ahhhhhh, my haif fix is satisfied now! I feel so much better. Right after I posted that, it closed again and I didn't have the patientce to try again. I'm better now.... Editor, what's up? are we getting too big for our britches?
  18. My explorer keeps closing, but only at this site. I can get to a page or two and then it closes on me. One of the error messages said something about google downloading, which makes me wonder if it is a new add...
  19. Reconstruction Park Tear'em Down Trails why do we need a catchy name? Central Park isn't catch and it works well enough. Houston Green or something would work well enough for moi!
  20. sound like good excuses me, I have none! I'm going out! unplanned meet and greet??? if anyone is interested? I'm thinking Jimmie's ice house...no fancy clothes or champagne, but maybe fabulous conversation
  21. why are we all here and not out drinking champagne in fancy clothes and telling fabulous stories?
  22. Flying that think would be like running through a vat of honey I bet! Yowser! wing span doesn't seem large enough does it?
  23. dang! never heard of Mid-South and I work in the industry! That certainly IS cheap! If it is a REP, I'm switching!!!
  24. very neat! someone here at work saw that over my sholder, and pointed me to this website that has tons of old gavleston pics... http://www.gthcenter.org/collections/photos/index.html
