  1. The distance isn't an issue at all. I was in Korea (Army) during the 2002 World Cup, and all the designated World Cup central spots in each city were nowhere near the stadium. Seoul alone had a party spot for 16 of the 32 countries, including the 10-Million-person party for their home team downtown. So long as Houston has a huge park or pedestrian shopping and bar-area downtown, we'd be straight. And we'd have that with the Downtown Park, Pavillions, and Main Street (same style as the Main Event in Super Bowl 2004).
  2. Check this out from FoxSports. They claim that if the Texans replaced Carr, the likely next QB for the Texans could be Jake Plummer?... Texans QB David Carr has a month to prove something, and it must be something big. If he fails, Gary Kubiak will have to consider the David Carr Experiment one that blew up in his face. But while Kubiak won't be able to do it all over again, he does have Plummer's phone number in Denver. He knows how badly Kansas City Chiefs backup Damon Huard wants to start again. And Kubiak's office isn't far from where Houston Cougars star Kevin Kolb became a hometown hero in his own right. Posted December 06, by Ben Maller
  3. If the Cup were in Houston, Reliant Stadium is the only stadium in Houston that would qualify to host. In fact, the reason why Houston has a chance is because of Reliant Stadium. It's huge, has natural grass, and has a good track record so far when it comes to hosting major sporting events and major soccer matches. What I'm curious about if this: if the U.S. were to host the World Cup, what role would MLS stadiums play? All the soccer-specific stadiums in America are no bigger than 25,000 seats. There's no way FIFA would want to downgrade down to less than a 40,000 seat stadium. I would imagine what they did in 1994 will football stadiums again, but would expect a bigger public frenzy from the American media. I think not only could Houston make a pitch to host, but perhaps Houston could make a pitch to host the World Cup Final itself? Every stadium to host the last World Cup match is considered legendary; Reliant Park on that list would be huge for H-Town. We'd also have the Downtown Park to use as our World Cup party area. Does Houston have a chance?
  4. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id...850&cc=5901 Apparantly, Brazil's the runaway favorite to represent South America as the host of 2014's World Cup. However, there's a good chance that Brazil may not make the grade. If Brazil is chosen not to be hosts in 2014, the likely hosts would be either Mexico or the United States. If in the United States, Houston may have a major chance at playing a host, which would be the biggest sporting event Houston's ever hosted. Just about every game in the World Cup has a bigger t.v. audience than the Super Bowl. Should Brazil not make it, watch for a major sales pitch from H-Town for some of the higher-round games.
  5. I don't think coaching or front office are the problem. I can see Kubiak doing big things as a coach (mainly because of his past with Denver). I DON'T see Kubiak doing big things with this current roster, though. They're gonna have to make some MAJOR changes and get players that can make an IMMEDIATE impact to coincide with Ryans, Williams, Johnson, and Carr. The line on both sides needs the most help.
  6. Prior to the past game against the Raiders, Carr had one of the highest QB ratings in the NFL. Also, with the exception of Peyton Manning, I can't think of any starting QB that hasn't had a bad game this season. y'all are talking as if Carr is the only reason why the Texans are 4-8.
  7. When will Rush Limbaugh be coming to Betty Ford?...
  8. ...uh....oh yeah yes...right there....no wait...move it right there....yeah...that's right...right...yeah...ohhhhh...uhhhhhhhhh.........yeeeaahhhhh.... My bad. My co-workers and I were just moving some office equipment to another room. I couldn't find a thread for "lifting computers and appliances", but "Global Orgasm Day" sounded as close to lifting as I could find on HAIF
  9. Correction: He MAY sign with the U.S.. FoxSports is completely convinced that this will happen, but ESPN first came out and said it's just speculation. All our nationial papers are reporting now that it's official that he's the person under hot pursuit. If signed, it will be a HUGE story though. Here's the Chronicle report on where things stand... http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...ts/4381414.html There will probably be coaching changes in MLS as a result. Also expect much more ABC coverage of U.S. soccer matches should a guy like Klinsmann lead the team. He'll probably demand a lot of mainstream media support to help the team, and U.S. Soccer and ABC/ESPN will probably be in heavy negotiations should he be signed.
  10. I thought universities paid for their own new stadiums
  11. http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/story/6227768 The German legend who coached Germany to 3rd place in the last World Cup, and has a title or two as a player, will become the new coach of the U.S. National team! For those unaware, he was the no-brainer runaway favorite that the U.S. wanted as coach. His signing will virtually give U.S. soccer a new respect from an international stand-point, and make us one of the favorites in 2010. Prior to the World Cup, the U.S. will be part of Copa America (one of the biggest tournaments in North and South American sports) and the Gold Cup (hosted in the U.S., and will have two quarterfinal games held in Houston). I think soccer hasn't been as big as it could have been because of how disappointing the national team has been in the World Cup. Even a 4th place finish could change all that. Let's hope Klinsmann can get the job done. I LOVE AMERICA!!!!!!!!
  12. That's our #1 problem right there. Why do we have to assume that we have to give up one for another? Maybe it would be more expensive at times to to certain things in a more environmentally friendly way especially for chemical companies, but if a job at a chemical plant's not available, find a job someplace else...
  13. Well, he's not a rookie anymore. After 5 years, this is when U'll probably start seeing his true form. I consider Yao Ming a Rockets veteran, and he's been in the NBA for four years. Regardless of how good or bad you play, there's no such thing as a 5-year rookie. Either you can play or you can't. And if you're still playing like a rookie at year-five, who's to say you're not still gonna be playing as a rookie in year-ten etc.? And if he's still the best player on the team at that time and playing like that, that says a lot about the team. I think (and hope) he just had a bad day, and shows what a star-quarterback is supposed to play like in the next game. If the Texans lost, he would have been called to blame. He should come back, though.
  14. What about asthma? I'm sure air pollution doesn't help any.
  15. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4375346.html Rumsfeld memo urged a change in Iraq policy Two days before his resignation, defense secretary wrote that plan wasn't working WASHINGTON
  16. I agree 100%. Also, if it wouldn't work for the Texans, Rockets, or Astros to build in the boondocks instead of the popular central locations of Relaint or Downtown, it definately woulnd't work for Dynamo. Just common sense. They don't have the luxury of taking a risk of losing fans when they currently average less than 25,000 in attendance. They claim to be a professional franchise; here's their chance to prove it. They need to develop the market. If they wanna take a financial risk, Dynamo should invest lots of money into youth leagues and getting more people involved. When Robertson starts selling out, they then should look into stadium locations...
  17. Iraq It's already a bad situation for 2007. I have friends who were already deployed there before scheduled to go back again for ANOTHER year-long tour Summer 2007. National Guard, Reserves, Active Duty, the whole shibangabang. Thanks to Democrats running Congress and Republicans (Bush) in the Executive position, I predict the war to become even more politically influenced next year than this year. You'll hear the words "Public Relations" pop up quite a bit in 2007 The Economy I think things will be steady unless a major disaster comes through. Travel I've started a business in Korea last month and Houston this past August. www.wellnessultra.com . (Click on United States. Cheap plug, I know:) But yea, because of it, I'm going to Korea at least 4 times, Miami in March for WMC, Netherlands/England at least once, and that's all in 2007! Job My business will grow rapidly, I'll help other 20-somethings in Houston and Asia make it big, travel a lot, and I'll hopefully FINALLY release my house/trance album in stores next year. I'll also produce a few albums for some up-and-coming hip-hop artists Sports I think more people in the states will become soccer fans if the U.S. does well at Copa America in Venezuela 2007. I also think Dynamo will repeat, and the stadium debate's gonna be taken to a whole different level when more rumors start up of different possible locations and public involvement. The Texans will get another good draft pick, but one that would give the Texans immediate results, because McNair will have no patience left next year. I think the Cowboys will improve a lot more with Romo starting the season off as starter. Texans still won't make the playoff next year, but will be a major spoiler. I give the Texans 2-3 seasons before they're playoff contenders. All three Texas NBA teams will make it to the playoffs, and I think all three will make it to the 2nd round at minimum. The Astros will be World Series Champions in 2007...IF we don't trade any of our starters, and we resign Clemens, Huff, and Pettite. We'll have the strongest line-up, bench, and starter-pitching line-up in the MLB. Houston Comets will remain competitive, and very well may end up back in the glory days of being Champs again, too. It will be a crazy year for Houston sports. We had a NL Championship in 2005 and the MLS title for 2006. 2007 will see both in one year, plus really competitive basketball. The Rangers will improve but won't make the playoff. They'll be close though. I give them 2 years. Houston Architecture I think the Astrodome Hotel idea will finally become a construction project. I also think you'll hear a development announcement on the Astroworld site. I think you may finally hear an announcement on a new major skyscraper downtown to add to the skyline. Downtown will become more vibrant in 2008 after the park and Pavillions are 100% complete, but I predict the area of town with the most development announcements will be MidTown.
  18. They're not the Boston Patriots; They're the New England Patriots. Foxboro, Mass is in New England, so they're cool... They play in Anaheim. Using Los Angeles in their name at all is cheap, but since Anaheim is in their name, they're cool too. They were also cool when they were the California Angels. It has nothing to do with the distance from downtown; it has to do with representing the city/area that you claim to play for, and not just calling them another city's name to sell t-shirts. If Arlington's willing to fork out the cash for the Dallas Cowboys, call them the Arlington Cowboys or something that represents the Metroplex or state. I think we agree that Washington/Maryland and NYC/New Jersey lose MAD cool points in that regard, and Buffalo's lost a few as well. If the Houston Texans were to move out to Stafford, call them the Stafford Texans. And if you didn't want to play for Stafford, leave your ass in Houston...
  19. Also, they're now known as the Arizona Cardinals, instead of the Phoenix Cardinals like in the early 90s, so they slide.
  20. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4367776.html This should be crazy, as I heard it was before. Glad I'll be in H-Town this time to see it
