  1. Old thread reviving... but does anyone know/have pictures of the old Woodlake at Gessner and Westheimer (currently an event/wedding center)? My dad was a projectionist there in the 80's and would take my 4yo self to work and let me climb around in the projectionist booth. I'd love to find some old photos/videos of it. I have a ton of memories of it and thought it would be fun to compare what my 4yo mind remembers vs reality. Thanks
  2. Let the battle of the faux urban developments begin. CityCentre vs CityCenterCentre! Who's going to claim to be more center?!?! Only the cars in the garage will tell.
  3. Nope, because I live in the actual center of the city. You raise a good point though, because wouldn't this be competing with that?
  4. Looks cool, but I thought people in the burbs moved there for the suburban lifestyle. Is this thing more of a novelty to drive your car to, have a cup of coffee, and pretend you're living "in the middle of the action"? Seems like a project dreamed up by some wealthy guys that read an article about Millenials and thought they understood us after reading it.
  5. The TMC is a juggernaut and I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. This is an area with a high concentration of wealth, tons of young employees, and millions of patient and family visits. Hence the upcoming developments down along S Main within the loop. Throw in Hermann Park and if they redo the dome... South Houston/TMC might be the new center of Houston one day.
  6. This place sure looks like it could be a casino... except it just so happens to have a ballroom/convention floor instead (probably with a lot of extra wiring for some reason).
  7. He was walking around the crowd just saying hi and signing autographs. Very cool guy and seemed very happy to meet everyone. I'm glad to hear we weren't crazy for giving up on the line. 3.5 hours with two young kids would have been impossible. We did score some free food and 50th memorabilia cups though.
  8. @Okie, I've heard from a super neighborhood member that the bridges will be rebuilt as a second initiative and that funding was just secured. They were very excited because we should be getting much nicer trails and bridges that don't have columns underneath to allow faster flow of water and no debris to get caught. Bike trails will also go under the bridges to keep us bikers from having to get in traffic. Apparently it has been funded to Stella Link. Should we get another thread going for it? I'd love to find more official information about it. As you said, project brays website is unfortunately out of date.
  9. That picture looks like a prison you'd see in a bad sci-fi movie with the guard/elite building in front with rows of prison blocks behind it.
  10. I'm not sure why a development like this in this area would be considered a risk. It's near the med center... so no worries about oil prices, there is nothing like this around, and you have a huge swath of young med professionals with money to spend that want housing nearby. Plus, the connection to the bike trail would be a big selling point.
  11. I can't believe I started this thread five years ago. Do I get a prize or something? I no longer live in the neighborhood, but has anything happened with the white house on elgin I posted about in post #1?
  12. The frustrating thing about this is that these two kids probably walked right past an HPD car running a speed trap somewhere on Fannin or W Gray. I know the city needs money, but I'm getting tired of seeing police sitting in their cars with radar guns instead of actively patrolling.
  13. This is awesome. The TMC is the new oil and gas for Houston and will continue growing (esp if they are successful getting some for-profit biotechs to move from other states). This is very smart for HCC.
  14. I was there probably the same time you were today. First time I've been to the new gardens and couldn't believe how awesome the place is. Seemed like there were a lot of tourists around as well.
  15. We'll, they're being practical and building something to maximize the square footage they have and that matches the rest of their campus. You'll still see O'Quinn from all directions (especially from the West). I actually think it's a pretty cool looking building w/ the glass mixed with stone. I also like that it goes with the rest of what they have instead of building something off the wall. Also, there are probably some cooler buildings than O'Quinn tucked away in the TMC that are not as tall, but much more interesting to look at.
  16. I never thought I'd see people on HAIF complaining that a building will be too tall. Major development in the TMC... but it might be too tall and block a view of a building? Seriously?!?!
  17. From that article, they say how the med center is a hedge against oil since it's insulated from it. I wonder why other developers haven't noticed this and built more near the TMC? They'd be able to rent to oil and gas types, as well as med center workers... thus a pretty high chance of always pulling in more expensive rents.
  18. I like the activity, but wish there were more dive bars and live music places. My band used to have some fun shows at Dean's and now Dean's is a swanky bar. I think Downtown bars would have more staying power if they made Main like a 6th Street instead of clubs and restaurants opening only to close a couple years later. We need more live music in these places!
  19. Austin is favorable for tech companies because there is a lot of young talent willing to work for anything. Even at a Senior level like mine, salaries seem to average about 20k less than Houston (exceptions are the outliers like the Googles). Tech companies are able to find smart people from a large pool... and young tech workers find it more fun to work for those types of companies (or build the next "app"). Personally, I prefer Houston for the pay + cost of living, and health care industry.
  20. I agree that turnout was the problem. Harris County is still liberal, but I think the Democratic party at large made the mistake of distancing themselves from Obama. They should have put him front and center, shown some reminder news clips about how far down the hole our economy nearly tanked vs where we are now. I like Obama, voted for Davis regardless, but think Obama showing up down here could have encouraged more liberals to get out and vote. The Democratic party ALWAYS makes the same mistake... playing the politically safe route. Each time it bites them in the butt. The last time they didn't go the conventional route was 2008.
  21. Love the renderings. As a crazy ride, I think it would be awesome to include a reverse zip line that mimics what a homerun is... meaning you fly through the air on the same path as a homerun over the fence. They could even start where home plate initially sat.
  22. I'm confused by the ski idea. How long of a run will you have before it's over and you have to go back to the top? If it's 30 seconds downhill, then wait 15 minutes in a line to get back to the top... that's dumb and people will get tired of it.
  23. Couldn't agree more. I lost my youngest brother to suicide last year and the pain it brings to everyone is horrible. I feel so sorry for this guy and those who knew him.
