  1. You're forgetting Cyclone Anaya's and El Patio (now XXX). Those places have been around a long time and do great business.
  2. I'm trying to figure out what HCC has going on with that huge crane that popped up near the super block over the weekend.
  3. Yeah, I drove in front of the place a couple hours before it happened. It looked like there were a lot of people there and I told my wife how it seems they are doing great business. That guy is a complete idiot. I wonder what this event might have on their business now (even though they kicked him out and it happened outside).
  4. Midtown owns half the superblock and Camden owns the other. Camden builds apartments... Midtown builds parks. A plaza is coming my friend.
  5. Yeah, I've been there a couple times. Good pizza. It's more of the type you'd find in Italy vs. the NYC and Chicago styles you see over here. I personally like the American take on pizza better, but Piola is good when you want a different type of pizza.
  6. You can see the signage here: http://innerlooped.com/1320/scout-square-nearly-there/
  7. Thank you for this info. My wife and I actually drove around the area again because our Realtor highly recommends it. It's nice to actually hear from someone that lives in the neighborhood. The main negatives we found were some very bad streets.. and traffic seemed pretty bad during rush hour (at least when trying to get to the area). We also thought there seemed like a lot of older people still living there... so it's good to hear about kids in the neighborhood. One thing that also worried us was the chunk of old apartments around Longfellow. We still are just trying to nail down an area within the loop, so thanks for the info.
  8. This looks like a cool project. From the design, it sounds like it will be matching the Calais directly across the street.
  9. The new Scout Square development is coming along and you can now see the new BlackFinn Saloon underneath it: http://innerlooped.com/1261/blackfinn-showing-and-elevators-hanging/
  10. Thanks for the information! Meyerland was another on our list of places to check out. I was worried about McMansions taking over that area as well. Is Meyerland more immune to the McMansion craziness or are we all doomed?
  11. I swung by there on Sunday to order takeout and there was a sign on the door that said they were closed Sunday and Monday for labor day weekend. However, their site doesn't show Midtown as a location now. http://www.rubytequilas.com/locations/
  12. I was driving around the Med Center today and decided to go check out Linkwood and the surrounding neighborhoods. I'm not sure all of the exact neighborhood names, but the area I'm referring to is south of S Braeswood, north of 610, and Stella Link and Buffalo Speedway run between the three different sections (with Linkwood being in the middle). The homes seemed older (streets old too), with not a lot of street lighting. There were some very nice, new homes and some awesome older mods. Linkwood Park seemed nice, but there were a chunk of older apartment complexes right around it. Longfellow looked like a nice school. I guess I'd like to get any resident's opinions on this area. In particular: 1. Is Longfellow a good school? What about Pershing middle school? 2. How is crime in these neighborhoods? When looking on Houston Crime Maps, I see that home break-ins seem to be the more popular crime in the area. Do the nearby older apartments cause any problems? Would you feel safe walking around at night? I could tell by just driving around, it seemed empty during the day and was wondering what police response times were like in this neighborhood. 3. What is your overall opinion of these areas? Are there a lot of kids around here, or older residents? 4. Do these homes flood? Overall, I was impressed with Braeswood and the bayou (very pretty along it), but am not sure what to think of these hoods. There were a good chunk of yards not well kept, everything seemed older, and it felt like a place my grandparents would live as opposed to younger families. Thanks for your help in advance.
  13. What section of land are you referring to? Is it the one that Junction uses for parking (that has the abandoned row houses on the back side)?
  14. Very cool. I'm curious, but could you share some of the story on your house? I noticed it was renovated last year. Do you all rent it? It looks like an awesome place.
  15. Sorry for the misunderstanding, I thought you were referring to Glover Park. The lot you are referring to is still waiting for funding (last I heard).
  16. Why would someone sell after it's built? If it's bad, it presumably could impact resale value. It would make more sense to just enjoy the density they moved their for and not take a $ hit on trying to sell it. The vine idea mentioned above is a cool idea. On the plus side... their units are now hurricane and tornado proof.
  17. Not sure where you've been, but that house was demolished months ago. The discussion on the plans for this lot are new (I've talked with the designers). Midtown also just received the funding for it so it is now happening. They are in the process of finalizing the designs right now.
  18. What does "all under" the bridge mean? Sorry, I'm confused by what plans you are referring to. Where is the location of the bridge?
  19. As an update to the original article, HPD recently spoke at Midtown's public safety meeting about this news segment and said the reporters were dead wrong (and they were upset by the reporting). The officer even called out an ABC reporter (and cameraman that did the original story) at another public meeting on their incorrect reporting. Apparently the reporter took crime stats from areas outside of Midtown and lumped them in as part of Midtown... hence that's why you see the neartown guy speak and not a Midtown rep. The officer had the stats with him at the meeting. If you look at HPD crime stats within the boundaries of Midtown itself... crime is down by a good chunk.
  20. That Letterman clip of him trimming the hedges in front of KHOU is awesome.
  21. Wow, that's insane. Where at and what time of day/night? Did they catch the suspects? I'm not saying they are limited to bum fights and drunk patrons... just that a good chunk is.
  22. I know they bust a lot of club goers for drugs... but they bust a ton of homeless and random foot/car traffic. Anywhere there are a lot of people with disposable income looking for a good time, you will find dealers. The news report was more about an increase in aggravated assaults. From what I see on the maps (and what I've seen personally), most of the assaults are homeless on homeless type of crime or fights at a bar. The locations on the map for agg. assaults all tend to be spots I know where homeless sleep or hang out. If ABC wants to complain about crime at popular hotspots... they should also look along Washington Avenue http://houstoncrimemaps.com/neighborhood/memorial-park-washington-avenue/ 11,600 Total Crimes mainly burglary and theft
  23. While I do hope this makes HPD pay attention (I can't tell how many times I've seen them drive right past a prostitute or crack dealer)... we still need to keep things in perspective. Midtown is the most pedestrian friendly neighborhood in the middle of the 4th largest city in the US. There will always be foot traffic and people walking around. We have rail lines, bus lines, are near tourist attractions, etc. Businesses just need to do a better job of providing security to their patrons (just like Target, Walmart, malls, etc. have private security). HPD needs to patrol more and actually talk to people walking around on the street instead of just driving by them. Once HPD makes their presence known, people will take notice and behave.
  24. Editor, I started a thread on this awhile back (not sure if they should be merged)...
  25. I never thought reading words on an internet post could give me heartburn.
