  1. Nothing sez 'cozy wine bar' quite like $2 beer, Half Price Humpdays and Soak-It Sundays.
  2. I remember neighborhood usage stats being reported in a Chron article last year, but never found them on the COH website.
  3. I look forward to no fun whatsoever. Massive project meltdown at the office. Awoke this morning to flooded front yard and busted water main. Having house torn up for floor refinishing next week. Various moo social obligations next two weekends. Officially arriving at middle-age hag status next month. Now I understand why people keep a bottle of scotch in their desk drawer. For suck times like this. And to top it off, I feel wrong to complain when friends like Niche don't even have jobs, much less an office stash. Whew. Rant over. Thx for listening.
  4. Yay, got our letter today!! I don't know if it's even physically possible to increase my red wine intake exponentially, but I will have to give it the old college try. Very happy about having glass pick-up now.
  5. With rare exception (you're Caesar, Napoleon, a God, etc) intentionally setting out to build an iconic monolith is rather like giving oneself a nickname. True icons reveal themselves over time. We can't just start calling ourselve 'T-Bone' and expect to get a seat at the executive table.
  6. [quote name='TheNiche' date='Wednesday, Marc ok, that didn't work. I think I'm done trying to use HAIF at work until they upgrade us from this farkin fossilized IE 6 dinosaur. ...or whether you don't care about the ugly because you're too busy being a sane and responsible driver to notice it, like me. hahahahahaha! You're just seeing if we're paying attention, right? We all know you're eating a chili dog and texting.
  7. Have my prayers been answered? Vines, is that you? Come back, T.V.!
  8. It looks no better now. What with the new Home Depot compound, and the acres of beige crap surrounding the HEB at Bunker Hill. The old and tatty was just replaced with new and ugly. And a lot more of it. And what's with that sad multi-color little place over on the south side of the freeway across from Ikea? It's been empty for a few years now. I do agree that feeder road development Texas-style looks like ass. It's so nice to get out of state where the highways are at least bordered by green and you have to do a exit loop or two before you're assaulted by shopping center generica.
  9. I'm trying to find out if Eastwood is on the list. Broadmoor has the big bins, at least as far as I could see on the streets that intersect Dumble near Austin High, but nada on my side of Telephone Rd. I want a big bin!
  10. I've often wondered what percentage of the big-box shoppers eventually go to the other restaurants/stores near their primary destination. I shop at this Target/Petsmart about every other week, but have never gone to any of the other places, and doubt I ever will. In the world of retail real estate, is there some sort of factor that's used? For example, we have area demographics of x, expect xx percent of those to shop the anchor, and xxxx of those to shop the smaller stores by virute of proximity?
  11. .....and I personally think it would be cool to brand a corporate logo straight onto your forehead. Hopefully that sounds absurd to you. What have we become, culturally, when a whole generation not only mistakes marketing for beauty, but longs for the visual blight of ads to 'liven up' public spaces?
  12. Hey, G !!!! wtf, you should stop by more often.
  13. ...speaking of Burn Notice, the completely awesome Bruce Campbell is at the Houston ComicPalooza next month.
  14. Maybe he has a point about 'shining stars' and design, etc. The galleria area is by design a temple to conspicuous consumption, so why not dress the trains themselves? The uptown line cars could all have various paint jobs, a Pucci print, a Hermes, etc. Times is tough; I bet Gucci would be willing to make a deal for the constant free advertising in exchange for some logo treatment on a train car. The stations could look like those big LV train cases. ....effectively taking the "Houston doesn't care how it looks" refrain and the money/brand/image worship and all it corollaries (more supertall shiny buildings!!!) to its logical conclusion. Somehow, I doubt this is what citykid had in mind, tho. And since Dubai probably already has an entire mall shaped like a Prada shoe, eh, forget it. We'd be behind the curve. Again. Sigh.
  15. Awesome idea! It will make meeting younger guys at bars slightly less creepy if they're not young enough to actually be my own offspring. Just kidding. I'm having a Stifler's Mom moment.
  16. Laying it on a little thick there with the cultural relativism trowel, huh? It could have been a thousand years ago or more, and not much would have been fundamentally different. An impaired person interfered with the ability of another person (possessing authority and/or physical might) to accomplish a task. The impaired person generally loses.
  17. Isn't it great? Rodney was forced out of business temporarily due to debt issues, yet like a post-apocalyptic roach who refuses to die, is back in the game using the same old business model of aggressivley promoting debt financing to sell a shoddy foreign made product with a 300% mark-up to the lower middle and working class. Boo effin hoo on Finger's debt problem. No interest, no payments for 3 years, indeed. Good luck if you try, like we did, to deal with one of their floor lizards on a discount for cash. It's all about the financing.
  18. SNOMG!! I saw that floating around online after the big blizzards recently and have been hoping for a chance to use it. That, and 'snomageddon.' Actually it only just started raining about 20 minutes ago. Has the forecast changed? All I remember hearing is one inch, north of 1-10.
  19. Since when did this cease being taught in junior high???
  20. Clearly, the highlander drum circle kids who congregate at Eastwood Park every Sunday morning haven't gotten the good news yet. Cute fingerless-glove wood nymph dancer/occasional percussion girlfriend, if you're out there reading this, you know what you must do.
  21. Well, I'm glad that I apparently wasn't the only person sending a "WTF!!! call me!!!!!" text. You discovered what I recently did, that the formerly choice AF OCS is impossible to get into these days. My SO was a Navy man and would recommend Amphib. Small ships, (relatively) shorter floats, with only a couple of big Med and North Altlantic cruises during his enlistment. Home base is VA Beach/Norfolk, which does not suck. He was one of those smartypants with big scores and took the crap job of boatswains mate when he went in. Other than the occasional 'problem with authority' on account of being a smartass (you two are alike in ways) it was a good fit for him. We should probably stop with all the unsolicited advice. You'll figure it out.
  22. indeed. It sure is great that UH athletics has big money to spend. Meanwhile, the rest of the university is going to eliminate 83 positions and furlogh all staff one day in order to cut expenses. This link is to the admin and finance pages: http://www.uh.edu/af/budget10.htm Click on the second bullet, then on the campus reduction plans page click on the first bullet for the central campus plan to shave $15 million this fiscal year.
  23. he he. Nice one. But now we've gone and given the lad ideas. wait a minute.....all this talk about acid....I just finally clued in to your screen name. Now that's some crazy. I hope there's not a direct connection between mkultra and you?? oh, and how 'bout those class A vacancy numbers! (......feeble gesture at staying OT.......)
  24. WTF Niche!!! You did NOT! That's not just crazy, that's Roky Erickson crazy.
  25. You might want to shop around for discounts--many of the big banks, insurance companies, and investment houses offer discounts for Turbo Tax. I've used Intuit's online product since it came out--have never bought the software box or messed with downloads. For years I got my discount through USAA's website; this year I used bank of America and TT Deluxe was $19 to file the fed form. I believe Vanguard, Fidelity and T. Rowe offer a similar discount if you have 401ks or mutual funds through them, ScottTrade always offers a discount; I believe State Farm is also offering 25% off this year. I'm a big Turbo Tax fan, mainly since I've become so famililar with the product and I have to input so little manually. My taxes took me 20 minutes this year, and half that time was processing the e-sigs at the end of the process when you actually file. In fact, it's so efficient, I've already gotten and spent my refund. But my new hot water heater is great!
