  1. edit: oops--got that sorta wrong. Thanks, firebird for the clarification. Pearl and Lone Star were acquired by Pabst and are brewed in Miller's plant in Ft Worth, I believe. That used to be the only beer my dad brought in the house (his stepfather was a trucker for Lone Star.) I used to hear all kinds of cool stories, like the reason HEB finally relented and started selling beer (back in the day), was because the plants basically threatened to mobilize their workers to shop exclusively at Handy Andy instead. Growing up, our backyard BBQ was a LoneStar keg on a post, cut open lengthwise and hinged, a little handle welded on. I remember Busch Gardens too. My brother got pooped on by flamigos. It was like someone dropping a paint bucket of bird poop in him. Copious poop. Gross.
  2. Yea, for this season. Just not too impresive so far, but we're only a few games in to the season. And in baseball, like investing, past performance is no guarantee of future results. The Astros seem to attract expensive stars on the verge of a non-productive season.
  3. It's going to be a long season. At least the new hot dog grill cart is one section over from my seats. Not feeling the love yet, but they finally pulled Woody, so reason is prevailing somewhere. Did anyone happen to read the Houston Press story last week? The rules for their drinking game were a hoot. I'm encouraged by Towles and Bourn. Tejada and Lee, not yet. And of course we have the distinction of probably being the only team with a star out on DL for something called "anal fissures". I also have a bad, creeping intuition that Pence will be on the DL a lot. It's funny watching his fans. A group of about 6 pre-teen girls were in front of us for the Indians pre-season game, carrying on like he was on American Idol or something. My BF has a total man-crush on him. That said, I'm glad it's finally baseball season. Go 'Stros! edit. Tigers, not Indians. As if it mattered. We lost 10-0.
  4. which reminds me, even though it's a month away, I park at my office for streetside action of the parade along Allen Pkwy. Room for 3 in the car. Maybe a HAIF daylight-hours event.
  5. I must amend my earlier post, after driving by this evening. There is earth-moving going on now, along the back stretch of the property. The parking lot and Starbux access--still good.
  6. It's serving as a handy overflow parking lot, and allows more room to access the starbux drive through. Haven't seen any work on it in a while.
  7. All the REIT is doing is holding it. At this point it looks like a strategic purchase, by someone's measure, and not a lot else. To me anyway. Lock, I can't believe you've sullied HAIF with a quote from those Chron board trogs!!
  8. That cracks me up. I love Galleria 1. I remember the Bennigans used to be a total party place in the 80s for christmas shoppers who had dropped off. Meat market supreme. The last time I was there, people still cruised the rink. Kenneth Schnitzer, heh! Do you think many people remember? When I was wee, we would occasionally get treated to a meal at El Fenix. They had the best chile rellenos ever. All that 70's spanish-galleon decor thing going on, white tableclothes too.
  9. I just noticed that the calendar says its your birthday. Happy Birthday TJ! But just what the hell are you doing on this board? You should be doing birthday things. Hope your day was great! Of course it was great--you're not even 40 yet.
  10. "Ick" is not exactly the word I'd choose. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I'm going to have permanent, lifelong issues now whenever a tongue gets near me. Thanks, though, for waking me up. I was nodding off in a conference call before that post.
  11. so what's the secret surprise? Any speculation? If librarians are excited , it must be good
  12. Jot down the map specifics and call the Antiquarium on Alabama and Kirby. They may either have reprints or know the source.
  13. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the most useful thing I've heard in days. I have a 'Neck Rub Geezer' down the hall. With these nasty old Mr Burns fingers, too. Ick. There's a closet full of logo'd sitcky mirrors along with all the other logo'd crap. I can't wait to try the ice water trick next time Mr Burns comes into my office and lurks behind me when I'm on a conference call.
  14. true. if only they just weren't so tiny. Don't know about the men's but you can barely turn around in the women's.
  15. It's been about a month since I've been to Ninfas, have you seen how the parking lot and deck is coming? Those restroom renos are desperately needed. Do you think Antones could be reaching too far out of their competency? It's hard to get past po boys and bulk olives when I think of them.
  16. You just spent a whole 5, 6 lines talking about Austin. You don't seem to have much to add to a conversation about Montrose. I see you claim Clear Lake as home. Have you lived in Montrose? Are you even old enough to have known it before the townhome invasion? Have you ever set foot in a bar that wasn't "Numbers when you were a kid" Just curious. And, no, Meyerland isn't going to be the next Montrose.
  17. Actually, I thought it was. At least in terms of legal precedent, anyway. Weren't a number of high-profile cases argued that way? 'The greater good' blah blah.
  18. Would that billion be at all affected by this? http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5597761.html
  19. Has anyone been to the Grove patio for drinks? Can I ride my bike over in unfashionable shorts and t-shirt and go mingle for a refreshing vodka? I'd guess they don't care, being a park and all. But it being cool and new in Houston, maybe I need to be on the guest list or something.
  20. This weekend is not the official opening. It is a special (but open to the public) event honoring (name escapes me) local jazzman involved with HSPVA among many other things. This is the concert with Al Jarreau headlining.
  21. From street level it's pretty amazing. Both developments sit so close to Kirby, it feels like the 4 lane road is small path. I had dinner last night at Beck's on the patio, and I felt puny and insignificant in the shadow of progress.
  22. I think Niche is black and white in terms of what constitutes 'journalism' and has been quoted incorrectly in the past, but Nancy merely lacks attention to detail. Quotes have never been sacred, though. Sources, yes. Quotes, ehhh..... Niche, maybe you need a publicist!
  23. ....and to think i gave up religion for lent this year. Damn.
  24. It will be very cool having so much new stuff in walking distance of my office. No more parking lot roulette at the MegaMarshall's when I need lunch-hour retail therapy.
