  1. hey, i got upgraded to the astrodome! i hope i get to go there again for a soccer game in the near future...
  2. ^wow. your quote is in there (see my original post, it's in the QUOTE section), the whole thing. when i restated it, you saying "you feel" means thats what you think. i left nothing out. i feel you need to calm down.
  3. i seriously doubt this. just because we don't all post our opinions on a thread like this, doesn't make you the "one of very few people" who are qualified to compare the two cities. i have lived in both, my brother and father have lived and worked, and been educated in both, and we all spend a lot of time in both cities. i disagree with a lot of things you say about houston, but i find it pointless to argue so i usually just stay away. i can't believe this thread is still open, which is the reason i looked at it at all. both cities have their flaws, they're both unique, and they both can be great, and i for one am glad for this. that's one of the reasons i like it down here, i have so many options for a cheap weekend getaway and a good change of scenery, whether it be new orleans, austin, san antonio, or dallas. and since i'm posting, to answer the original question, i think dallas feels "newer" than houston for the most part.
  4. the article mentions the only current use of the astrodome is "some high school events and the rodeo". the rodeo moved to reliant as well right? i hope this happens, using the astrodome for sports again would be great. haven't been there since the astros last season there...
  5. there were several hurricanes with a 5-day track to head straight towards the brownsville area, then turned north suddenly. remember claudette? claudette tracking graphics archive they thought we were in the clear, then suddenly houston was in danger. enough that we shut down mission control and handed ops to the russians, and believe me we hate doing that. it ended up hitting well south of us, but far north of brownsville. they do the best they can considering all the factors, and they usually do pretty good but you never know. not trying to scare anyone, point is no one has any idea what's going to happen with emily regarding strike locations, not for a few more days at least. if it heads our way, i say we evacuate to new orleans. there were more LA plates at the galleria that weekend then TX. but it took my friend 10+ hours to get here...
  6. all the palms i saw go up during the superbowl are still up. some have been a little ripped up due to storms. since then, they've planted additional shrubbery along 45S, as well as 288 and i'm sure other places. haven't noticed any new palms though, except outside houston.
  7. you guys have convinced me, i'm taking the bus to town today. i wish i would have yesterday cause my little car couldn't get under 45 at elgin due to high water, so i had to hop on a bus to go 1/2 a mile.
  8. actually, i've been to dry areas in dallas that were inside 635 (their inner-loop). and it is very annoying, and actually kept us from drinking because we gave up after a couple gas stations. but i'm sure if we knew where we were going we could have found a spot, as someone who goes there once a month, i just can't figure out what's dry... but soon my brother is moving to san fran, so i won't be going to dallas very often anymore!
  9. i drive by this all the time, finally looked it up. don't think i've heard anything about it on this forum yet. groundbreaking is complete, looks like they're close to on schedule. Clearpoint Crossing this is just east of Ellington Field, near genoa-red bluff on the newly extended space center blvd. planned to include retail, professional office space, medical offices, residential, and dining.
  10. looks like clemens isn't planning on going anywhere: chron article he just wants us to get another hitter, and hopefully we will
  11. does anyone know what the expected attendance level is for the upcoming Gold cup games at reliant? doesn't seem like it has been advertized well by the media, i hope there's a good turnout.
  12. 4 of us went on friday evening, we had to wait about 30 minutes for a table without a reservation, but we just had a few drinks at the bar. quite pricey as mentioned, but good. i only had an appetizer since i had already eaten and was just meeting up with friends and the waiter didn't seem to mind. my buddy had the fillet and was very happy. i also went intoxicated after an aeros game to check out the view, wearing my jersey and shorts. they were happy to have us and serve us drinks, very laid back (it was a tuesday or something so they were dead). i wouldn't recommend that on a weekend though, the crowd was a little more upscale.
  13. i was actually just talking to my dad about this yesterday, we were in dallas. he has lived in houston for a while now, but used to live in dallas and still has lots of friends there. his guess (we're indian) is no matter how many indians they have in dallas, there are probably twice as many in the houston area. obviously i have nothing to back this up, just his thoughts from spending time in both places, knowing people, attending events, number of stores/restaurants, etc. it would be great for air india to fly out of here, but it really wouldn't affect us that much as consumers. all flights would still stop in europe, so why would we take air india when we could fly air france or klm, get continental miles and better service for the same price? our biggest wish would have been if continental flew to india from here (through europe), rather then going though newark.
  14. last night around 10, i clicked on chron.com and saw the headline: ensberg heading to allstar game. it was pretty vague, but it said ensberg was chosen to go to the allstar game, because an unnamed player would not be going. i was watching sports center at the time, and they mentioned how many believed ensberg should be going but he was now. i checked the astros website and there was no mention. then finally after midnight it was on the astros page, rolen dropping out and ensberg being chosen. the chron article was by Richard Justice, maybe he found out somehow before it was officially released?
  15. don't forget to vote Radar for best weatherperson.
  16. that's the most positive thing i've read about rail in houston in a long time.
  17. yup, got a bottle at the walgreen's on canal just last fall.
  18. another article about growth in suburbs: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/3248714
  19. trader joe's is expanding quickly, hopefully we'll get one in houston soon. rice epicurean and central market are two grocery stores you should probably check out as well as whole foods.
  20. i think we're ok as well. in looking at this map: http://www.houstontx.gov/fire/news/fireworksharriscomap.html we're in the little white section east of 288 just inside the beltway. thanks everyone
  21. thanks, this is exactly what i was looking for. except the area i was interested in isn't mapped. my friend lives in an unicorporated area of harris county, not far from the city limits on cullen south just inside the beltway. anyone know if fireworks are legal here? or how to find out?
  22. i will always go about 10-12 over the limit when on a freeway in the middle of nowhere in certain states (like TX), no matter what the limit is. so if they increase it to 80, i'm going to go 90+ instead of 80+ i think there are a lot of people like this, so it won't be the simple case that we'll be speeding by less. the average speed will increase. the big thing between 55 and 70 is not the number of accidents, but the number of fatal accidents. not sure if the severity of the accidents will be much worse between 70 and 80, but common sense tells us things will be worse. the argument they have to increase the speed nowadays is that cars are just as efficient at these higher speeds, and polution and fuel consumption will not increase that much. but i'm for increasing the speed in rural areas. though i would hate to see troopers take away the cushion they give currently.
  23. the A380 can barely get off the ground because of weight issues, can't be fully evacuated under 90 seconds as required per FAA regs, and can't land on any of our commercial runways without significant mods. Airbus has been receiving launch-aid subsidies since its conception, and the US is taking this to the WTO-to end launch aid to Airbus. we'll see what happens. and boeing is doing just fine. ok, i know this isn't an airbus vs boeing thread or anything, just had to respond...
