  1. well if they are actually caught looting (items not of necessity), and they have to get them out of the city, maybe ship them to huntsville where they belong.
  2. instead of worrying about companies moving here, maybe we should hope they set up shop temporarily. we have plenty of empty office space downtown right? LA companies could be offered reduced temporary rent, and get a computer infrastructure set up so they can continue operations for the time being. if its set up right, it would be a win-win situation.
  3. i think it was meant more for us then for them, and to urge us to show what type of city we are. for what its worth, i think it was well written. even if the refugees do have internet, i doubt they are HAIF members.
  4. i would ride it all the time if it came out to the burbs... luckily i'm taking a class at UHCL rather then UH this semester, so i'll be limiting my drive downtown to the weekends. but my little car does get 30+ mpg.
  5. i heard something about needing an evacuee ID to go to the comets game for free. so i'm assuming that they will be free to come and go as they please from the dome, which would be good.
  6. i was on a flight yesterday from orlando, they flew their normal flight path, right along the coast. it was sad to see so few lights, especially when we got to new orleans. but there was more power then i expected, probably from generators. there were a couple people on the flight i happen to start talking to while waiting in MCO that were from new orleans. one was a police officer and the other a student, both flying to houston the meet up with their families. they will be looking for employment, and plan to stay in and extended stay motel. a lady next to us from Houston offered her house and gave them her cell number. but they both plan to go back to new orleans, the love the city too much and won't give up that easily.
  7. i'm sure the water would be pumped out, but seems like there will other repairs that may not be so easy. with parts of the "membrane" torn off, the dome now takes in water, and other parts of the infrastructure may be damaged. hopefully this isn't the case, and also hopefully people will be able to go back to their homes by then. i just like the idea of Houston, so there's more of a chance for local fans to enjoy their team. plus its good for us of course. san antonio would be interesting also (I guess they went there to practice during Ivan last season), since there's no team there and there were rumours of luring the Saints there.
  8. i have a temporary idea for the astrodome, why don't we offer it to the city of New Orleans as a place for the Saints to play for now? I'm sure they'll get plenty of fans, especially Houstonians for the first few home games that just want to see a game in the Dome again. And if there are parking issues with two home games the same day, the NFL could move one to the evening to accommodate. The Saints don't really have many options left, maybe LSU Stadium? Don't know if that suffered any damage...
  9. there's so much to do there, they should just check out some travel guides online and see what interests them. for xmas, the rockefeller center tree is a must see, and they can take their kids skating out there.
  10. i've only been there once in new orleans, but their chicken was far superior to mcdonalds. it was real chicken! i thought it was really good, tender, high quality strips. the only thing i didn't like about it is the limited menu.
  11. only thing i find really good at johnny rockets are the shakes. and yes, i went to the one at Katy a while back, and i've been to one in LA.
  12. i would stay there if someone bet me $438.75 that i wouldn't stay there.
  13. i always park for free as well. but many don't want to park in the street for safety reasons, and yes most are too lazy to search and have to walk.
  14. i just heard on sportscenter that Denver is the only city to ever refuse the Olympics (1976). They're reasoning: cost, pollution, and population boom it would cause. i know many on here have stated they would rather not have it (not sure if i agree, it may do more good then bad, i don't really know), but just throwing it out there cause i thought it was interesting.
  15. i guess my point was, i'm thinking if they got some of the summer storms we get, amsterdam would be flooding too. while i was there in the "rainy season" it would drizzle for days, but no downpours. the banks would never rise, and the ground wasn't saturated. i just don't think its the best comparison.
  16. i go to denver a few times a year, and this area has been busier everytime i go. the layout is nice, and works well for downtown denver. i think it'll be very good for downtown, and take us in the right direction. hopefully we'll get some good retail, restaurants and bars.
  17. depends on where you live. over the air is never that great, before i had cable NBC came in pretty fuzzy, but everything else was tolerable (15 miles SE of downtown). if you're going to be in a newer apartment or house, you'll probably be able to just connect to the cable (coax) without paying for it and get public channels with pretty good reception. not as good as cable of course.
  18. amsterdam averages 32" of rain per year. we average over 50", and we often see downpours of over 4"/hour. i don't think they ever see anything like that. i'm not a civil engineer either, i'm sure they can build a tunnel to withstand our rainfall, but it can't be easy or cheap. look at LA, they get 4" over several hours (obviously they don't have to deal with this very often, but it does happen) and there's chaos. i think houston does ok considering.
  19. talks of using UH Robertson stadium for the MLS team if they move here, now that the new proposal for the astrodome is out there. http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/3317055
  20. i hope chipotle is not taking over. it was started in denver, then bought out by mcdonalds. when i was at work in denver, my co-workers there asked me if i wanted to go to a mexican restaurant for lunch, i was thinking probably not given where i was, but i was curious. they took me to chipotle.
  21. though EFD is still part of the airport system, continental pulled out of there last year so its only used by a few private carriers, the Air Force, and NASA. it was costing continental too much to fly out of there, and they were charging the same price for tickets that included the hop to IAH. many NASA employees wrote letters asking them to keep the service, and charge whatever they want for tickets, since it was mostly used by business travelers. the convenience was great, location, easy parking, no security lines. too bad they don't offer that service anymore...
  22. I got this email from Opus, just wondering if anyone else had heard about this: Introducing the Downtown Entertainment District Validated Parking Program available every Friday & Saturday night! The Downtown Entertainment District is pleased to announce our new Validated Parking Program. The program, which begins Friday, August 5, 2005 and will continue every Friday and Saturday, was created in response to your concerns about difficulty in finding safe, affordable parking around the area. 23. the CL location does have a brewery, and it looks like they'll be supplying any non-brew BJs around. "BJ's is unlike other brewery-restaurant operators because only about one in four of the chain's locations has a brewery on site. The breweries produce enough beer to ship to holding tanks at the nonbrewery units, which helps keep capital costs down, ensures that breweries operate at capacity and improves consistency." http://www.lumiverse.com/p/articles/mi_m31...39/ai_n13649009
  24. i love MMP. i've been to 9 major league parks around the nation, and its one of my favorites. great atmosphere, you feel like you're in the game no matter where you're sitting. unlike some of those giant stadiums out there. they have random small concerts on a stage after games. i believe collective soul was there earlier this season. but there's no need for actual concerts there, its a ballpark, that what it was built for, and it serves its purpose.
  25. they recently constructed a building over the Saturn V rocket to protect it from the elements, which is good i guess but really takes away from NASA. the size of it sitting out there at the entrance was great to see. i do hear rumors that we will be getting a shuttle once they retire the fleet (planned for 2010). i don't see whey we wouldn't get one, smithsonian already has one, so that leaves three between KSC and JSC. maybe they could place it where the future NASA pkwy and Gulf frwy will intersect. but i'm assuming it will go in the rocket park on-site and be included in the tour.
