  1. agreed on two buck chuck (which was $3 last time I went to TJs in LA), except don't take aspirin with it, stick with advil if drinking! stick to spending a little more for much better quality at spec's. i'm looking forward to the Truffles (cheap and good) and all the candied fruits, spiced nuts, random stuff like that. they have a unique selection. i heard good thing about their frozen foods if that's your thing, never tried any thought.
  2. I walked in to the school yesterday, they were cleaning up, getting classrooms ready, etc. they let us walk around, looks really nice. snapped some pics on my phone: center courtyard: cafeteria/gym: chem lab: rooftop garden: library facing w gray: parking rooftop/tennis courts: future baseball field i think?
  3. looks like a good site for a paintball match!
  4. The rooftop garden is on the roof of the main building. the tennis courts are on the roof of the parking garage.
  5. the parking structure is mostly complete. there are about 100 spaces down, and another 100 up. I wonder if this will be a shared garage for students as well? No where else to park... I know they provided buses from all over the district but I assume they allow commuting students as well... Edit: looked at the original rendering which had 166 spots for students and 60 for faculty, the garage probably covers that. Anyways, on the roof there are yellow lines painted for parking and white lines painted for three tennis courts. They have the holes in place for where the nets will go and good lighting it appears. of course there will be 0 spots for parking when the courts are in use. I guess they will be for practice in the evenings and weekends. Also they will have to put a fence up otherwise there will be a lot of balls going over the edge.
  6. to add to that, the Cup was played in Home Depot center (LA) which they own, chosen before the season started (Super Bowl style). so yes, win-win-win for AEG.
  7. AEG owns 50%, Oscar De La Hoya owns 25%, and Gabriel Brener owns the other 25%. AEG solely owns the LA Galaxy. MLS doesn't like that they have interest in two teams, that especially came up during the MLS Cup last year which was Dynamo vs Galaxy. From the Dynamo site:
  8. there's another thread about NewsFix somewhere. i like it, i would take it over normal local news any day.
  9. this is the 2nd time i read this thread title and thought Star Pizza was coming. At least its been a year since I made the mistake...
  10. we just bought a Tricon home a few months back and are loving it. there were few issues (minor) post move in, and they were right on top of everything quickly.
  11. thanks! I haven't walked by there during the day and in my drives it appeared different from that pic.
  12. I was curious on what they were doing with that tract of land across from the main build. i thought it was just staging but from kdog's picture and from what i remember last week, it looks like they may actually be building something there.
  13. Wanted to share, this vigil is planned for Thursday at 7pm in front of City Hall. Details: http://www.facebook.com/events/369953586406782/
  14. maybe i don't get bothered as much because i'm brown...
  15. you guys must be unlucky, or I must be really lucky. I have lived around midtown for the last 8 years, I walk everywhere. No one has ever taken a swing at me, asked me for money more then a few times before getting the picture, or threatened me in any way. The most annoying is when they start with the stories to get money for the bus, but again they always give up in less than a minute. I deal. I used to go to the old Sammy's (Main and Pierce) and get the 'help you park' every time i drove. I never paid, and though there is a chance of getting broken in to there I doubt there is a correlation between these homeless guys and the people breaking in. Yeah, they may have some big scam going, then there's nothing you can do. But if someone is going to break in to your car i doubt the guy you either gave $2 to or not is going to prevent it or point out your car. The thieves will go for the ones they know how to get in to, can easily move components, or see stuff just laying out visible asking to be taken. the only thing I have every given homeless people are my leftovers or bottles of water in the heat. And apparently that's illegal now? anyways, I like living in an urban environment. that's what most of the people on here and the ones that move to midtown are looking for to some extent. With that comes problems. If you want to close all the charities and move them to the suburbs, good luck. But I bet the homeless will still be out in midtown, and the numbers will vary due to other factors, not the charities. They'll just be a few blocks over.
  16. I honestly know nothing about Search, thanks for sharing this information TGM. are the sex offenders homeless or falsifying their addresses for sex offender sites? I guess there is no way to know. if it is the former I don't see what Search could do about it, this is a service for homeless and though people may taking advantage of it, it can also help people. I hope you do some research on IM and what they do for our community, and not group all of these places together.
  17. Remember I'm only talking about IM here, not the other charities (though I don't have a problem with them either in theory, but I haven't done much research on them). IM is moving exactly 1 mile. They don't encourage vagrants, they are upgrading one building, adding conference space, and building another building. I suggest you take your fight up with the Greyhound station. The vagrants have been here long before IM, and when you live in an urban district it is something you have to deal with.
  18. LTAWACS, you'll need to be more specific with your question. Though i realized i had a typo, it should have said "by appointment". Original post corrected. And I consider myself sane and reasonable, and live in midtown.
  19. I have a friend who works for IM, I was speaking to her about this when it came up in another midtown thread: http://www.houstonar...ts/page__st__30 I had stated there that this is not a soup kitchen, and it was pointed out in the article linked in this thread as well. They provide food to home bound seniors. There will be no handouts at their site. The only people that come on site are refugees that are scheduled to come for assistance, but the State Department, by appointment. I didn't realize that the few people here that are worried represented midtown as a whole, and midtown would rather have an empty building and lot over IM.
  20. I was just trying to book a trip to Austin and it wasn't a destination any more. I did a quick search and found this: http://www.khou.com/news/Megabus-cancels-Austin-as-destination--163808336.html that's annoying, I had a few trips to Austin planned where I didn't need a car and it would have been perfect...
  21. i still miss the 90's one, mostly because of the space shuttle. as long as the numbers aren't cluttered with background colors and faded images, i don't see an issue with some distinct images on the edges that portray texas.
  22. Tuned in to 103.7 for my daily Live at 5 today, and heard a countdown (cheesy launch countdown), and the announcement of the Houston launch of "Air 1". I gave it a few minutes after he announced that they were on in Houston and asked for someone to bring him some Pappasitos. Then he went on to say that "this isn't your normal show, its unique, blah blah" then he went on to say this is not a show about Christianity, this is a show about Jesus. I then reproggramed my station. This was the last station in Houston i could consistently listen to. Back to my mp3s... I guess this is part of Cumulus's downsizing (bankruptcy filing?), is 104.1 next?
  23. This sounds like a non-profit I will be supporting: http://blogs.houston...r_to_open_d.php New bar that will donate profits to a monthly voted on (by patrons) charity potentially to open in the old Red Hat Jaz Cafe location at 924 Congress.
  24. Previously someone had posted city snapshots of racial/ethnic maps. Here is an interactive version that is really neat to play with (contains income driven maps as well): http://projects.nytimes.com/census/2010/explorer
