  1. wow, i just checked out the power of Houston links. i wish i was around for that, looks amazing. i hadn't even heard of it... any chance they're going to do it again?
  2. no, its actually lit up. i saw it last saturday night for the first time as well. it looked really cool.
  3. looks like augusta and westheimer. from searching the web, there were three locations so hopefully that one is still open.
  4. completely off topic, why did dolce freddo (sp?) shut down? it was on Kirby just south of 59. best gelato i've had outside of italy. that includes chicago and nyc. anybody remember that place?
  5. i went to the rally, it was kinda weak. just a few radio stations giving away stuff, and a bbq place with a smoker. not many people out, but it was drizzling a bit. homeplate and b.u.s. were packed, we headed towards main, got some firehouse phillies and watched the game at the saucer. i also took my friends to the JPMorgan sky lobby, since we're never downtown during the weekdays. it was overcast, but they enjoyed it. too bad they're all from st louis, it wasn't a fun night for me. stupid edmonds.
  6. i heard on the radio that there's going to be a street party tuesday during the day, stages and all. anyone have more info? just heard it once, haven't seen anything else on it.
  7. downtown could be a little more lit up, but i think its ok... here are some pics from the skyline lounge at the hilton americas. little bit of a reflection but they turned out pretty good:
  8. also remember JFK was in houston before dallas, stayed at the rice hotel nov. 21st '63 who knows why oswald was down here, interesting indeed.
  9. my girlfriend just came from manhattan, so that shouldn't be a problem. going out there for one drink can be close to $10, so she can handle our happy hours. thanks for all the info everyone.
  10. thanks, any tips are appreciated. i know you guys mostly talk about buying, never hear much about renting...
  11. my girlfriend just moved down here and is looking to move downtown. i've been around for a few years, but living in clear lake i don't know anything about downtown other then the entertainment side of things. she found this site for apartments downtown, some of the listings look too good to be true. looking at these two, i'm wondering where they are, don't recognize the pics at all: 1-1 luxury downtown loft historic downtown high rise before we waste our time on the phone and a day with an apartment locator, i figured someone here may be able to provide some insight. is this site legit? she's not looking to buy since she's not staying here for long. she works at beltway 8 and 290, but wants to live in downtown or uptown/galleria area. uptown probably makes more sense for her.
  12. i was just in denver for work. they wanted to take me out to a mexican restaurant and ended up taking me to chipotle! chuy's is my favorite down here (that creamy jalapeno is unbeatable), and freebirds for the fast burrito. though neither of those are technically mexican, i prefer tex-mex.
  13. i thought a big hurdle was parking, and how reliant wouldn't allow any potential astrodome-use parking durning Texans home games, the rodeo, or any other major events. i hope they come up with something good.
  14. i always wondered what sea-arama was, my dad had a bumper sticker on his '80 mustang...
  15. they have several of these "diagonal crosswalks" in old towne pasadena, ca. they work really well when you have a lot of people. haven't seen them in nyc... here's a story on them
  16. has anyone checked out empire bar? thinking about going there this saturday. also, are they still doing the last call trains? it's something ridiculous like 2:15am right? assuming we miss that, how hard is it to get a cab, are they around or would i have to call one? have some friends coming in town and we're crashing in midtown. it would be nice to show them there are other ways to get around in houston other then driving...
  17. oh, and if you want to try them, and don't live anywhere near 1960, you can get frozen white castle sliders at several local grocery stores. the taste is comparable to the real ones from what i hear. and as for steak and shake, they'll probably be down here eventually, there's one in north dallas now. good shakes, though half the time we went there the machine was broken or they were out of shakes. and they're all 24 hours, except in st. louis (but denny's and IHOP close there, don't ask).
  18. i think white castle has the worst burgers, and from what i've heard krystal's are somehow worse, so no, i won't be trying it. for late night its TCs for me all the way, or whataburger if i'm craving those chicken tenders and gravy...
  19. if its feasible, soccer in the dome would be great. anything other than a parking lot would be great, and if its sports even better. bothers me that the dome wasn't even mentioned as an option in that article, when much of it focused on a lack of location to play. if reliant's too costly to operate for soccer, wouldn't the dome be in the same boat?
  20. it would be sweet if they could use the dome for this, and modify it to work. but i'm assuming attendance levels would be really low. when you got to aeros games mid-season and they're not doing to well, sitting in Toyota with most of the seats empty really takes away from the game. and the operating costs of the dome, they would be losing money going into it... and i don't think the weather here would be a problem for playing outdoor. the season is from april to october, sure it would be hot, but most days wouldn't be any hotter than dallas, and it usually only rains in the afternoons and clears out in the evenings. no different from east coast florida. hooligans are key, we may have to import some until we get it right.
  21. from a chronicle article about gambling in texas: "a Houston lawmaker proposed turning the Astrodome into the world's largest luxury casino." that would be something
  22. i heard an idea of putting in a bunch of retail, a rollercoaster, and hotel or something, but the problem was they (i don't know who) wouldn't allow any parking during home texans games, or the rodeo, which took alot away from anything you could do with the dome. anybody heard anything about that idea recently, or know who put it forward (private, city)?
